Only one person here insists on it. And that's because they don't want to concede a single point in their debate with you.

For everyone else it's simply a simpler way to view the "you're a rogue province.. No YOU're the rogue" situation that actually prevails. It doesn't help that when growing up and a looking at the bottom of a toy or Christmas decoration what I read was "Made in Taiwan" not "Made in the last bastion of democracy in china"

Also when you have two governments claiming sovereignty in a particular region, treating them as separate nations is sound practice on a pragmatic level. You deal pragamatically with governments and not these abstracts called nations, you treat them as separate nations. so were the north and south treated (by those who recognised both) in the American Civil war. So were the Republican and Nationalist forces of Spain treated in their civil war. Different flag, different leaders, different goals, on a pragmatic diplomatic and trade level this is equal to a different nation.
