I honestly believe it could of done without some of the loony toons antics; but there was just way too much awesome in that episode for me to complain.

I think it added it's own little flavor to it...

Also, for those who think it's weird that Pain was able to move the way he does, just think about a puppet, a marionette, if you will. This is what Tendo Pain is, and essentially all of them are --he just happens to be the strongest of them all. Picture strings attached to his body as some puppeteer controls his movements from above; it makes more sense to me.

I did notice, but what actually annoyed me was the introduction of an ocean into the vicinity of the village. The entire rolling battle just seemed like it wanted to forget it was meant to be near existing landmarks.

I think it's amazing how this Pain got taken down by a hug, and didn't even struggle to get up.

Whereas the Deva Path was fighting off the Kyuubi, and got up after several blows.

Please dont let Sasuke's fights be this ridiculous<3

omg. this particular moment of the episode is what made me hate it the most. it was already bad enough that they skimped on his legs when he ran and the fox's attacks were like little lasers. i really, really, hope that someone important picks up on the fact that the majority of the fans who have stuck with friggin kishi through hundreds of episodes (including the filler) and read the manga have done so b/c we liked it: why fix something that isn't broken!?! i want the old anime style back, otherwise, i just can't take this crap anymore and i'll stick with the darn manga.

I was looking through 2ch (Japanese 2ch) to see how they were responding to the episode, and it looks like most of them loved it. There are a few posts that didn't but they're in the extreme minority compared to this forum at least. Most of the criticisms seem to echo the few here (Pain acting out of character and looking weird when he says "My pain is greater than yours" and Pain being able to survive more than he should) but I didn't see any that outright said the animation was bad. Basically everyone seems to agree that the visuals were movie quality and most of the complaints are about the actual content of the episode.

Also this post made me laugh:

原作漫画至上主義の外人達が吠えてるねw
ちょっとやりすぎw

The foreigners who believe the manga is superior no matter what are crying over this lol
They're kind of going overboard lol

Its my opinion, but 167 was the worst Shippuuden Episode, I've ever seen.

Overall:
Temporary the animations were simply bad and the last Pain would have died frequently. After the nail-action (Kyuubi-Naruto hammered Pain with a big rock into the ground, as if he were a nail) Pains head would have been slobber and later in another scene he first would have had a basal skull fracture (he is thrown against a stone wall and his head is stuck inside it), then a broken neck and lastly a smashed body.
What we know from Naruto Shippuuden is, that if we disregard the Chakra thing, the whole manga is made REALISTIC by Kishimoto. He tries to keep a little logic, but this episode denied that at all. This fight should have been a serious fight and not a "Sakura punches Narutos face because he was perverted"-fight.
Disregarding the missing reality-factor the animations are awkward, as I said and the charakter Pain is ripped out of his concept at all. Deva-Pain was always depicted as uninterested and emotionless charakter, who thought himself as god and who never let emotions out. Even Nagato did never scream like that in the speech with Naruto, but a corpse, who doesn't have feelings does so, huh??
Summarizing: From a character who was made like L from Death note, they made a Mister Satan from Dragonball Z.

Storyline:
The storyline is completely ignored for filler. First, Naruto tranforms into some weird, uncontrolled pseudo-kyuubi-mutation, as if the kyuubi would have the desire to joke around instead of breaking out as fast as possible. There's way too much filler for a scene where Naruto should abruptly explode into a Kyuubi and avenge his "dead" friend.
Except from that, the most epic scene ever misses: Pain uses Shinra Tensei, as Kyuubi Naruto runs towards him, Kyuubi Naruto thrusts his tails into the ground and throws Shinra Tensei back at Pain, with a fierce grin. THAT was the COOLEST scene, and they simply IGNORED it.

Music:
This is the only good thing in this episode. The music was really good and fitting to the scene.

Characters:
Worst of all, the most important character is ripped off his whole concept: Pain gets aggressive, which has nothing to do with this character. This is like if we made Kakuzu a singing, happy smiling fairy who throws flowers around and Hidan an animal-friendly benevolent. Also Naruto's transformation should have been more abruptly and not that crazy pseudo-mutation.

Animation:
Not as bad as the character depiction but also extremely bad. In several scenes the character design and their animation is simply bad. The whole episode is a "We are annoyed of this stupid anime so we'll make some junk over there to finish the weekly episode as quick as possible =/ !"-work. Look at the pictures in the spoiler, this shows, how few work the animators did in this episode:
