'I love you' isn't even a word. It's a phrase. But I will say that it has been used so much it has lost its meaning. I really hate it when people use it all the time (I love this, I love that, I love you, I love him, etc.) Personally, I have only said it aloud about four times in my entire life to two people. I mean it when I say it.

I try not to overuse "love." Like when I confessed my "love" to a guy I've only known for a short time (but became really good friends with) I just said that I liked him. Not love. I've maybe only said "love" to him like twice and it fit the context.

I'm not sure it is the most overused and 'overrated', but it is up there. For myself, I've thought about a couple of substitute phrases to use.

True it is over used probably to the point where it has lost alot of meaning.

Love like hate is a strong word but is very commonly used.

I barely say that... and I don't think it's being overused... but I only use it to tell someone how I feel

Thats why I say *Love* isnt real. Its just a level of a lust you are feeling for the other person. Thats why Ill never say "I love you" because I dont believe in "True Love". If a husband dies and then the wife remarries.....what happened to the true love there?
Ill be saying something like.....I lust for you or something. Sounds pretty stupid but it is more accurate then saying "I Love you"

Its all just a level of Lust

In today's world, you don't just say those 3 words to your lover ; you say it to your friends or people you've only known for a short time. Sometimes, it does annoy me but there are people who have great personalities, so you'd probably say, "I love him. He's so great!" But you know it not that kind of love.

Another thing, teen relationships. For most of them, you know a person for 3 months ahat way and yes you may like them that way but when you confess after such a short time, without even knowing him or her so well by saying, "I love you." well you know the rest I guess.

I know a girl who broke up with her bf and after 10 days she gets a new one and she claims she loves him :/

Isn't there anyone who believes in friendship before love like me? ._.

So what do you guys think?

OMG i 100% agree with you
i mean kids at my school they would start going out and they would tell each other 'i love you' and a coulpe more days they break up and they date another person and they cycle goes on and on
it annoys me so much

For fling relationships yes it's very overused and its annoying.

But for actual loving, long-term relationships at any age no its not overused. Same for a hobby of some kind, many ppl say I love shopping, I love videogames, I love anime, I love sushi, I love to cook, I love to sing, you get the point, its OBVIOUSLY a different kind of love so I dont think that kind of stuff contributes to its loss of meaning.

What does contribute to its loss of meaning are as I ssaid, flings and when people just go around saying it to their best friends or just friends in the hallway, or just as a way of saying goodbye.

As a side note to people picking on teenagers for saying they love someone then breaking up soon after: Have you seen the number of divorces in todays day-in-age? Adults are just as pathetic, just like some teenagers are just as reltionship-successful as some adults. You really cant generalize.

I was friends with my boyfriend beforehand and when I actually confessed to him I said "I like you, a lot" because I wasn't sure if it was proper love or just a crush.
But then he started going on about how much he loved me and it started feeling awkward.
