After all, Gundam was never about the story, it was about the giant robots!

You fail as a Gundam fan if you think like that, Gundam is suppose to be more about the story and character, robots come after. If Gundam was just about robots, it wouldn't have become popular to point where its whorshiped as a religion .

It was the first of its kind to prove that it was POSSIBLE to appeal to older viewers because back in those times animes with giant robots were usually geared towards children.

Gundam is awesome no matter which variety it is. If it's changed, which I don't think it has much, then I still enjoy it.

Gundam is divided into The Universal Century (UC) and Alternate Universes (AU) varieties.

The Universal Century Stuff:
Mobile Suit Gundam
Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team
Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket
Mobile Suit Gundam: MS IGLOO
Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory
Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam
Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ
Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack
Mobile Suit Gundam F91
Mobile Suit Victory Gundam
Mobile Suit Gundam UC (aka Gundam Unicorn. Not sure where this fits but it's UC related)

Alternate Universes: (a space between titles indicates a seperate universe)
Mobile Suit Gundam Wing
Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz

Mobile Suit Gundam 00
Mobile Suit Gundam 00 Season II
Mobile Suit Gundam 00: Awakening of the Trailblazer

Mobile Suit Gundam Seed
Mobile Suit Gundam Seed: MSV Astray OVA
Mobile Suit Gundam Seed: Destiny
Mobile Suit Gundam Seed: CE73 Stargazer

Mobile Fighter G Gundam

After War Gundam X

Turn A Gundam

SD (Superior Defender) Gundam

Gundam Evolve

Whoof! All from memory too, because I've seen most of them, being a big Gundam fan. As for where to start you can either start with the Original Mobile Suit Gundam, if you don't mind dated looking animation from 1979 or you can start with any of the AU universes. Just don't start with Superior Defender Gundam, in fact just skip it because it's totally awful.

If it didn't have giant robots in it, I never would have watched it. I was a kid when I first saw it, so maybe that's why. But then again, I wouldn't watch it now as an adult if it didn't have giant robots. If Gundam wasn't about the robots, it probably wouldn't have been called Gundam, and they wouldn't be in every series, and the main focus of the stories.

Gundam may heavily be based on the story, but the story has always been centered around the Gundams themselves. The way you're talking... I'm betting you didn't like G Gundam!

I remember like the guys in Gundam Wing we're like all 5'1" and the tallest was around 5'7" and that was supposed to be sexy?

LMAO, you must have not checked my profile did you? If you did you would of realize I have a epic 3d God Gundam picture in my profile. I never said robots weren't important , that's just you assuming crap. I basically said story and characters comes first, robots comes after.

Well my mistake. So you liked G Gundam. I wasn't proclaiming that you didn't, just that I thought it was likely.

As for the rest. I disagree, I think the Gundams come first.

Just be happy that the newer gundam stuff doesn't come close to the style of the originals. It makes them more special this way and if they did I bet a lot more old-school fans are going to complain about them and say that they are an insult to the masterpiece of the originals, blah blah blah.

Oh NOEZ tHeSe nEEw GUNdamUUs are t0o FLASHEE FoRzEe Me!!

Good job comparing mainstream series done from 1979-2000 that were STILL using cell-shading to today's mainstream series that uses digital/HD crap .

What we're complaining about are generally what I wrote for my first post..

The current Gundam trend

-anorexic bishies with generic shoujo personalities
-loli girls
-main characters having Gundams that are OVER NINE THOUSANDS
-insanely one sided curbstomping on cannon fodder
-pew pew pew
-taste the rainbow
-Plot armor powered by the Gods
-Astral projection (aka misty nudity)
-Introducing as many characters as possible and only 10-20% of them have actual character development

I think it was wing which led to this messed up obession with multiple gundams. They started off with 5 almost invincible gundams, and skillful enough to turn old veterans into cannon fodder which was just way ridiculous. Even though 00 had the same scenario at the start, there was some capable veteran fighters like smirnov who was capable of fighting without dying, but in wings the gundam side had a wipeout victory until somewhere in the operation where wings end up self detonating.

Its also the reason why i liked ms igloo a lot compared to crappy wing, those are ovas showcasing how true fighters fought with skills instead of a one click button of mass destruction

Story-wise I've always preferred the UC story for gundam. I agree with Freyt that gundam is all about the giant mecha. Frankly if they weren't in the series it wouldn't be NEARLY as interesting as it is had they used traditional methods of war. I've watched a lot of the various series but I just can't get into the seed/seed destiny.
As far as what's wrong with the gundam series anymore I completely agree with andydono's list of problems with the series as of late

Well each Gundam series is self-contained, it has a main story that it starts and ends during the frame of a single series. It's not one story but rather 25+ different ones. Some of them just happen to contain some of the same characters or take place in the same universe.

The Deathsythe is a Gundam Wing Mobile Suit by the way.

Haha this is so true. The newer Gundam series so far have been disappointing, although I admit I havnt seen Unicorn yet but I'm not holding much hope.

For me, Gundam ended with Seed/Destiny.

Unicorn rocks. It brought back the old with new awesomeness
