Japanese Bug Fights!
Posted 1/5/08 , edited 1/5/08
Someone just sent me this site: http://www.japanesebugfights.com/

It seems to be a site with videos of various bugs 1-on-1 fighting to the death. I was just curious what people on here would have to say about this. It turns out that there's a pretty long history of bug fighting in Asia.

China:

Cricket fighting in China dates back to the Tang Dynasty.

In southern China, particularly around Macao, cricket fighting had been a popular pastime. Many famous hotels around Macao held cricket fights where bets up to thousands of patacas would be waged on a single fight. Prized crickets became famous and actual funeral services would be held for them.

In Beijing, the Association for Cricket Fighting still organizes cricket fighting events and championships.

Though it went on year round, the height of cricket fighting was between the summer solstice and autumn equinox. Banners and flags would be given out to the owners of cricket champions.

While it is illegal in China to gamble on cricket fights, the fights themselves are legal and occur in most big cities in China. Crickets are sold openly in street markets. Chinese Police attempt to control illegal gambling by arresting the gamblers[1].

Care and breeding

Crickets had pedigrees and would be carefully bred by knowledgeable keepers. Keepers kept their crickets in fighting shape with a carefully controlled diet. Ground worms, fish and water chestnuts was a popular diet for protein and nutrients. In some cases, even veterinary care and medicine was administered to keep a cricket in fighting or breeding shape. Also, everyday a new female cricket was provided for the champion, during a time of three months.

Filipino Spider Fighting:

Spider fighting (pahibag sang damang in Hiligaynon) is a popular blood sport among rural Filipino children. The game begins by placing two spiders at opposite ends of a stick from a walis ting-ting (a broom made from the midribs of coconut leaves). The spiders are then led to one another until they wrestle. The first one to drop off the stick loses.[1] Top fighters can fetch up to 100 pesos (2 US$), making the sport a lucrative market for children.

Thailand:

Beetle fighting is a popular past time in the northern city of Chiang Mai in Thailand where it it seen as a means of removing the rhinoceros beetle, a pest to farmers, from the environment[1].

No it isn't pointless. This is a very relevant topic for Asian culture. Bug fighting has a significant history in Asia as I just added to the original post.
