Burn or Jump?
Posted 9/3/10
Jump and pray that I would be ok. Being burned to death sounds painful.

What! you actually want someone to be killed by catching you! Or maybe you mean you want to be caught in a fireman's net.

There is the possibility of survival from a fall of any height. It's a little ol' thing called terminal velocity. Once you reach it, you won't fall any faster. That is approximately 120mph(it varies slightly amongst humans because of difference in weight). There are quite a few cases of people surviving falls at terminal velocity.

And faaaaar more cases of people not. And plus you aren't going to reach terminal velocity from 9 stories. I'm surprised nobody said take the fire exit to the stairs that are there for the sole purpose of being used in a fire.....

I believe the inspiration for this topic was the notorious Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire on March 25, 1911in New York City. There were no fire exits in the building and all the doors from the factory area to the stairs were locked during working hours to keep the girls from sneaking out with hidden merchandise. The factory owners preferred to risk the "minor" disaster of all their employees dying in order to avoid the "major" disaster of petty pilfering of goods by underpaid workers. Those were the days when being a member of the lower economic class wasn't much fun.

The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire was one of those disasters, like the sinking of the Titanic and the Great Boston Molasses Flood, which changed the way things were done and lead to new laws and safety regulations.

I hear that during the World Trade Center disaster on September 11, 2001 many people fell and/or jumped from the upper stories. Apparently many people preferred falling to burning or couldn't stop themselves from jumping away from the intense, unbearable heat.

Base instinct is hard to resist. Natural instinct is to get away from the pain as fast as possible whether that be fainting or as you said jumping off of the building.

I'm not jumping unless Van Halen is playing.

LOL. What a vision that would be.

Since it's a cotton factory I'd gather as much cotton as I could and find a way to wrap it into a thick futon. I'd need everyones help. We throw it down, people beneath us understand our plight and then they align it for our safe landing. From there we climb down the ladder and jump the final two stories.

Heck why don't those lazy asses do all the work. Find a trampolin for us so we don't stay in the building for too long.

Why don't you guys combo?
Run into the fire -> get on fire -> jump.
At least you die doing a combo-chain.

I'd run into the fire then jump off with a burning passion.

LOL I only just read this after my post. That's also a good reason to go into the fire first!

Jump, I'm pretty sure I'd be ably to fly. If not, oh well.
