I was going to return my (american) football equipment on friday, but I didn't tell my coach that my lungs were fucked, so when I put the stuff in the ground, he said: "picked that up, you're still part of the team." then I said: "Coach, I'm sick, and I can't play anymore..." he then looked at me all puzzled and answered: "then rest and come back to train when you're better, you're not allowed to quit." I just nodded, and said: well, I'll go see if I can." picked my stuff up and left.
On saturday, I had to go to vaccinate people on the street against tetanus because it's vaccination week in México and they have students do the dirty work, so to my surprise, when we were walking, I found out that the doctor who was in charge of me was a pneumologist, so I told him what the other doctor told me and he looked at me all puzzled as if calling bullshit... then told me he'd examine me when we were done. He did, checked my radiographies and stuff, and then he told me: "your lungs are perfectly fine, they're just full of phlegm. the problem is up there in your Larynx, or probably trachea. With a lot of infections, it got a bit swollen and stuff, so less air comes in, also, your nose is pretty broken, so less air comes in. It's not a problem of your lungs not working, but not enough air coming in them. It can be treated pretty easily, though. We just need to clean your lungs from all the phlegm, give you something to relax the smooth muscle to fix your respiratory tract, and maybe go with an ENT specialist to see if you need to fix your nose, anyway, you're fine, just messy."
You have no idea how happy I was to hear that guy tell me those things... that day, my team had a game in the afternoon, I still couldn't play because I was still a bit sick and hadn't train in a week, so I went as auxiliary medical support, but after seeing my team getting it's ass kicked out there in the field, I realized that my place was there with the guys... the receivers coach told me he's not getting me in the field for a while just in case, but I'm starting training tomorrow again (actually, in about 7 hours). I feel as strong as a bull, and more motivated than ever... ready to kick as much ass as the game allows .
