Mecha genre (more particularly Real Robot) is one of favorite genre but the boundaries of both Real Robot and Super Robot had been blurred to the point that it is difficult to distinguish between the two.

Anyway, I find it more interesting to watch mecha anime from the 80's due to it's hand drawn artstyle which is something that no longer in use and the plot devices and symbolism has a deeper meaning (well, most of them anyway) than it is now.

You like to take it back to the purest form huh? NO crime in that.

Generally I am not biased twords any mecha anime, but ever since I watch Evangelion the series and the two films I feel such a frustration that I have not watched any mecha anime since. Evangelion does supply amazing fight scenes and some interesting plot points, but overall I have never witnessed more characters in one show fail to evolve and grow into whats needed. In the end your just left with this empathetic sense of self loathing and general feelings of being very pathetic. The male protagonist actually debates weather to save the world because he has daddy issues?
Are you serious, total failure as a human being. The series ends with him as he was in the beginning a heap of living breathing flesh without a purpose...sigh. Anyone else have opinions? I did enjoy linebarrels of iron, started out slow, but the ending is a huge payoff. Dragonaughts was kinda korny, but the over enphesized love story made up for some casual flaws. I know eureka seven also had a unique take on this genre, though I felt the general direction and story pandered every now and then. There are others that I enjoyed deluding portions of various gundum series and some I cannot remember to name directly, but tell me what you guys think.

hmmm .... the mecha genre is one of the best because the makers try to actually do something new and interesting , and if you noticed only the big shots directors actually do such anime's because it's costly and takes a lot of experience to pull , it's a genre that deserves support because they do their best . and another thing is that people should support original anime's , even if it was mecha . because it encourages the anime industry to grow and encourages writers/directors to try new things .

The only mecha animes, that I can think of, that have "deep" plots with a lot of focus on the mechas is probably GUNDAM. Of course, GUNDAM wouldn't be GUNDAM unless it focused on political problems and various things in the GUNDAM world.

There are other mecha series I have not watched which might be good at focusing on both the story and mecha.

Baldr Force EXE, was an "average" mecha anime to me. It had a nice story, and pretty decent mechas, but I thought it could have done better. It wasn't bad nor was it excellent.

RahXephon, it was a good series, focusing on abstract things, such as music. To "re-une" the world, the mechas use in the show was unique and nice, and the story itself was excellent.

Macross Frontier, I haven't finished this series, but from the 8 episodes I saw, it seems pretty good. It's a space opera, and it's rather different from the mecha animes you'll see, unless you saw it's predecessors. I am enjoying the series, and the mecha fights are pretty nice.

Edit: (some mecha animes I did not mention)

Code Geass
Bokurano (not too focused on the mecha, but on the story itself.)
Linebarrels Of Iron
Asura Cryin'

There are more I haven't watched/can not remember.
