I know this topic is out-dated in this forum, but i'm in the midst of reading my Singapore society coursepack, and it suddenly struck me - Do we have a national identity? If so, what is it? Being a mulit-religious, multi-racial society, and at the same time embracing modernity? Is that all? What is the essence of being Singaporean? Are we even proud to be Singaporean? Is our identity based on the sum of the different religions, ethnicities and culture of the people here? So then, we regard ourselves as Chinese, Malay and Indian, first, before Singaporean?

In America, you have African-Americans, Asian-Americans, Hispanics... so then, the whites are call simply Americans? Also, does the placement of the ethnicity of the group before national identity mean that they hold their own culture and race above nationhood? Would this then facilitate the segregation of society? into their own little enclaves, and worlds. All vaguely aware that they belong to this nation, but not fully committed to it. Putting their own interests above that of the nation, because their own identity is rooted in family, ethinicity, culture, race, above that of America. I wonder.... haha....

I'm not saying distinctiveness and preservation of one's traditions is unimportant or even detrimental. We all have our backgrounds, heritages that go way way back, that form the values and practices of the community we live in. We all have our own beliefs that shape our own values and principles and priorities. But if we are all to live in this really small island, can we be distinct and yet one?

we are distinct and yet one! i don't know anybody from another country who can say "i can end every sentence with lah today and speak perfect english tomorrow"

our traditions are rooted. even if they become diluted over time, the mindset remains. you don't have to tell someone born in singapore that you are to walk around in shorts and slippers! and yet it is kinda sad that they are getting diluted isn't it...?

i think it's because of overload of exposure to American culture... many Singaporeans are now kinda irritated when the topic of OMG NOT BLACK ON CHINESE NEW YEAR! BU JI LI (UNLUCKY) DE! is brought up, especially the pri sch kids that are like, "but the click 5 can wear black all day!"

i think there should be a examinable subject on the topic of traditions where you study the tradition of your race.. break up like mother tongue class

that way, the young will understand and they won't act this way anymore

and i think everyone can learn too! (:
