There seems to me some very common plot devices in 85% of anime. The hot spring trip, the follow the guy or girl you like while they are on a separate date. The field trip and visiting shrines scenario's, and last but not least one of the most harped on themes...sigh the childhood friend that shows up, typically just to heat things up and make the rivalry girls or boys be more honest with themselves. All of these are classics and they seem to bleed into many kinds of anime across the spectrum. Tell me what you guys think about the four most common devices used in anime, can you think of some other ones? I think this is a very interesting discussion.

1.) Even in the face of defeat, the main character never die.
2.) The main character always get stronger after a crushing defeat.
3.) The villain always gloat before the deathblow.
4.) Yandere, Tsundere and kuudere is always a must.

1. beach trip and sometimes ski trip
2. main character will die but comes back to life and kills the evil guy
3. the youngest and shortest boy is a complete monster or super strong
4. main character might have a fanboy or fangirl

i've thought of this

1. hot springs
2. first hating someone then having feelings for them
3. getting surprised to see their own powers
4. a character gets beaten up and then, when he's weak, he suddenly gets stronger (it's entertaining but i don't understand the logic of it)

Very nice and concise list of plot devices, definetely adds to the ones I mentioned before, so true about the gloating, or as The Incredibles say "Mono-logging" LOL

You have corresponding thoughts that I have...lol...so very true...how do so many characters start out so pathetic and end up being Goku strong? The only character that I can think of in a fighting based anime that wasn't and out and out punk from the beginning is Ichigo. Thats just my personal opinion, I am sure there are more. I see the hot springs popped up again, how many plots have you seen stall out with this classic waste of storytelling time. True some characters can be developing during this segment in a hot volcanic spring...lol...But I never learned anything mind boggling during a hot spring scene, besides the quote unquote fan service scenes, if you left it up to the writers you would think that the hot springs are Japan's number one pastime...lol

1) Bathroom scene. There is always a bathroom scene. Why?
2) Something shocking happens and surprises everyone.
3) There is always someone that doesn't like the main character and tries to do them in or something like that.
4) The main character(s) make a proud speech, that helps people, or let's the bad guys see the light~!

The bathroom scene with the thick fog...hem..we are know that there is not that much fog in a bathroom, unless Japanese water evaporates differently. Mostly I agree with you on the whole bathroom scene...it can be a real waste of storytelling time, but on the other hand it does show the character in their most vulnerable state and sometimes it shows them reflecting on different thoughts that can bring the plot into focus< the girl liking a boy and her thinking about it, maybe melting the stress away from one of the worst days in the character's life...ect....,,,and while the bath scene can feel exploitive, and I do agree with anyone who says that, sometimes it can portray real emotional drama and add something that was formally missing from the story. Just some thoughts....

Pretty sure that depending on each genre of anime....the common plot devices will be different.

Romantic comedy point of view

1. Hot Spring.
2. Love triangle
3. School setting?
4. Some Tsundere girl?

Bleh I think I butchered this

Fantasy/Action/Adventure
Main Character has no talent
1. Must train and train
2. Fights person with overwhelming strength
3. Wins and shocks everyone.
4. Even tougher oponent appears.
5. Repeat from step one.
6. Throw in some fan service, a bit of extra filler plot and your good to go.
Main Character has talent
1. Gets beaten up by dude or finds strength insufficient
2. Copy step 1-6 of no talent. Bam you gotta series there.
ROMANCE
1. Anything going well? Too bad. It's getting ruined.
2. There will be jealous rages.
3. Tsundere is a must. Yandere and Kuudere are optional.
4. There will be at least one scene for every girl in a change room, a bath of some sort, and in the dark with said girl being naked or just barely and the main character.
Overall anime
1. Characters are all idiots.
2. Important characters have plot armor and it's easy to tell who will die. Just see who gets the most detail and focus.
3. There are a couple options when a villian is about to kill a main character. A) Character gets unexplained strength boost. Character dies and gets revived later. C) Some random person saves the day.
4. Death is never permanent unless you're unimportant, a villian or it's a dark anime.

Shounen Action / Adventure
1. The main character believes in power of either: friendship, justice, love or any other reasons that you'd have heard of before
2. The villain kick the good guys' ass, showing all of his/her skills in the process, until the good guy suddenly stands back, give lecture how they wouldn't give up because they need to win to protect someone they care about or [insert any other reasons which you'd have heard of before], and proceeds to beat the shit out of the villain, or downright killing him/her.
3. There always seems to be a completely useless female character with the good guys, either damsel in distress or Ms Fanservice one way or another.
4. At least one of the good guys is a complete idiot, jerkass, useless loser or a bishounen

Shoujo/Shounen Romance
1. Good times don't last forever, this is like the golden rule in romance dramas.
2. There's a manipulative bitch of a girl pretending to be nice
3. It's like a sin if there's no tsundere - kuudere, yandere and yangire are optional.
4. There are more love triangles or harems rather than a normal steady couple, and many are unrequited

General Shounen / Shoujo
1. School, rooftop of a building, hot springs, showers, beaches are common settings
2. Some characters are either pathetic, useless, moronic, manipulative, naive, annoying or jerkasses.
3. Guys look extra bishounen in shoujo series, while girls look extra... 'unrealistically gifted' in shoujo series
4. Guys suffer from chronic accidental pervert incidents, while girls suffer from chronic klutziness.

Oh yeah I will add one to the list of your additions, how bout almost every anime I have seen has the main character walk past the same river with the bridge and sits on the hill and recalls memories, typically of a childhood friend, this is even more true with school anime...lol....is that not so true? HirakuNoShadow kinda reminded me about that one. Oh and one more things that bothers me what about all the open ended endings. The character goes through all the drama and the two girls or guys in the beginning are in the same place they where before except its the end of the series...sigh...I know they like open endings but i would like them to tie it up at least 50% of the time.
