Someday, after I finally strike it rich, I'm going to buy an island and declare sovereignty . From there , I will host a massive server cluster dedicated to fansubbing groups and the like . I will then offer asylum to anyone prosecuted for pirating.

Library. Borrow it, read it, then take it back. Best of all. It's free and legal.

OneManga has 2 options

1.) Move to another site.
2.) Follow the CR business model and suffer a slow and painful death.

CR was awesome before it went legal. The forum and community was amazing, so was the selection of anime.
Now, it has degenerated beyond recognition

Mangafox will get shut down soon along with a lot more sites. The publishers and licensors are going after the top manga sites as they are now taking big legal action against scanulations (Refer to here why which was also in my opening post. http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2010-06-08/u.s-japanese-publishers-unite-against-manga-scan-sites). OneManga getting a legal deal with Shueisha (Publishers of Bleach, Naruto, One Piece) and Shogakukan (Publishers of InuYasha, Hayate the Combat Butler, Ranma 1/2) will be really tough and really expensive. I hope OneManga could manage to go legal. The problem with scanulations mainly is these people are reading online for free only (With the companies not getting revenue. The same thing applies with fansubs.) and never buying the manga volumes. This causes the companies releasing and publishing the stuff to lose money. Heck you could actually make a mangaka creating a series you like go into debt and have to not finish their series.

Oh okay. Not really upset because I don't read manga anymore.

"One Love" by Bob Marley should do the trick.

If it were me, I would incorporate the site to alleviate legal responsibilities. Then carry on doing things like before.

There has not been a single lawsuit against a scanlation hosting site up to date, and there will not be one for a while. When serious threats come, I would simply drop the mainstream mangas.

If the potential lawsuit does land and the fine become too large, the corporation would simply dissolve. A new one would take its place and the whole thing would start all over again.

The term "Online Manga" gets searched over 1 million times a month. This is just for one search term that onemanga ranks #1 for on google alone. Google only makes up around 60% percent of searchers online, MSN(Bing) and Yahoo make up the majority of the remaining...which makes up a huge market.

The industry standard shows that over 50% of searchers will only visit the first search result. With that insane amount of traffic, adsense alone would be very profitable. With many other untapped sources, it would worth the heat...to me anyways. Afterall, it's only a few hundred dollars to start a corporation. Start a new in a new state when needed, rinse and repeat....and profit.

Torrent sites have gotten a lot of heat, the Pirate Bay has gotten sued for $4.1 million USD, that's chump change compared to how much they're making a year. On top of this, it's unclear whether they've won or lost the case. Whenever it gets to international infringement, things seem to be more unclear and enforcement seems to become weaker as well.

Manga scanlation hosting sites hold a significantly less risk (A LOT LESS) than torrent sites. The risk to profit ratio is quite insignificant imo.

But then again, this is just what I would do. The guys running onemanga will most likely do a (possibly far off) derivative.

Indeed Mangafox is in a similarly troubled position. And with the united effort from both sides of the Pacific, this may be real danger from anyone that attempts to defy.

Going the route that CR has will be much more difficult for them than it was for CR. Anime gathers more supporters than does manga, so a manga site starting from scratch would have hardly enough funds to expand their collection, and won't earn any traffic as a result, swiftly dying.

However CR itself could seize this opportunity to expand into manga, and gain even more funds through that. Their current support should be enough to get a good start into manga. CR also has technology already implemented into the site for viewing manga (due to an experiment from long ago).

I'm not much of a manga person right now, but maybe I would be if CR were to step that way.

Well the site isn't entirely shutting down. The manga will be gone but the forums will (With most members probably leaving) remain. Though what if OneManga were to join with Crunchyroll and the OneManga logo would remain and they would do legal manga stuff while teamed up with Crunchyroll? This idea was suggested by someone else really in this thread on the PlayStation.com forums. http://boardsus.playstation.com/t5/Anime-Discussion/The-Death-of-OneManga/td-p/45967914
