My favourite thing about Japan is the culture. I love the festivals and the little shrines you can find in random places. :3

“Recently, a Japanese railway company has decided that it would be much better if their employees smiles were improved. They have put into action a machine that takes a picture of their employees smiles and analyzes it for eye movements, lip curves, and wrinkles, rating it on a 0 to 100 scale.”
“Be happy! You have no other choice.”
- “Japanese Smile Scanner”, Neatorama
- “Smile! (It’s Mandatory)”, Neatorama

“No, just kidding. He probably took his own life. That’s how seriously they take their jobs over there.”
- Dave Barry Does Japan, Dave Barry

“there are many stories of people who couldn't see, couldn't breathe, but somehow found a way to crawl to work.”
“That half of the roadway was absolute hell. But on the other side, people were walking to work as usual. I'd be tending to someone and look up to see passersby glance my way with a 'what-on-earth's-happened-here?' expression, but not one came over. It was as if we were a world apart. Nobody stopped. They all thought: ‘Nothing to do with me.’”
- Underground, Haruki Murakami (Review and quote)

“The National Police Agency announced last month that 32,845 people took their own lives in 2009, a rise of 596 from the previous year. This marks the 12th consecutive year in which the number of suicides has topped 30,000 — a sad persistent trend in Japan.”
- “No Letup in Suicide Rate”, The Japan Times

“In Japan, he said, you’re simply not allowed to screw up. If a Japanese boy stole a bicycle, the parents would be horrified and ashamed beyond Western comprehension; they’d rush over to the victim’s house bearing gifts and apologizing profusely, because if the victim decided to press charges, the boy would never be able to get into good schools, and therefore would never get a good job. His future would be trashed because of bicycle.”
- Dave Barry Does Japan, Dave Barry

“But what was really pathetic about them was their desperately misguided effort to be different. […]each band with its official groupie uniforms and dancing their official dances and glancing sideways at each other to make sure they were all being different in unison. It was sad, really.”
- Dave Barry Does Japan, Dave Barry

I love how much they feel they have to fit in and be perfect. Japan is so wonderfully oppressive.

Honestly, I do like Japan, and I do want to visit. I want to go shopping, meet people, see a play, visit temples, all that good stuff. It’s not as bad as I’m trying to make it seem. But it also isn’t the wonderful anime land that everyone makes it out to be.

(PS. For those of you who keep mentioning that you love Tokyo:
“Tokyo is ugly. It looks as if it were hit by an anti-charm missile. […] Tokyo is huge. Something like 15 million people live there, and my estimate is that at any given moment, 14.7 million of them are lost. […] This is one of the biggest, busiest, most important cities in the world, and most of the streets don’t have names.”

Oh, this is an interesting topic. I can't say that I've really experienced Japan, though, Anime, of course, comes to mind, certain video games, a handful of fasion, formal and casual trends, food... Well, I'm not sold on the food, but anything different interests me, so I'll add that to the list. A lot of people lean towards the beautiful women, and I don't deny that there is no end to the eye candy, but there's more to a woman than looks, so I can't really say that's something I like 'bout the country. I'm not saying that I wouldn't...

Japan has this air of efficiency and speed, something that draws me in, but I'm not really sure what I want. I thrive around cities, technology and people, but I rather like the wide-open spaces of America's mid-west, too. If only I could mix the two. The artwork and music that is inherently Japanese, inspired by the land and the people - I'm not sure what to think. I've never really thought about it much.

To put it into words, it's a rush of feel-good and heart-felt purpose in disguise. There's that thought that Japan is behind on the times, socially, but maybe... They're just putitng more time and soul into the trends of the world and making it their own in a way that you can only experience if you go there.

I really need to go there. Who's wants to go with?
