Ahh Benjamin Franklin a Deist, almost atheist. (jus messing with you... But yeah he hated religion with a passion that is a little known tidbit of a fact for you!)

I'm confused, are you asking for the greatest human being who was not religious (however you define that to be), or the greatest human being based solely on non-religious accomplishments?

Errr... dude you really need to study history a little better before you start talking smack about Canadians sitting on their thumbs and taking their lead from the US.

I have on both the 'white' and native sides of my family tree a large number of United Empire Loyalists. Your revolutionaries called them 'Tories' I think. Trust me, Canadians very clearly Picked their sides whenever the US was at war.

Greatest human being you can think of, excluding the ones that will give the God Baiters and Holy Book Thumpers an excuse to hijack this thread as a new battlefield for their ongoing war.

It's a judgment call on my part but it definitely excludes, Saints, Prophets, Messiahs, Mahdi's , etc. Though, I'd listen to an argument in favour of say: Jean D'arc's socio-political-military accomplishments if you could find a way to express them without invoking god.

Right, as in since America became indebted to a "communist" China, Canada must follow because our banks did relatively better than the US did, correct?

Blow it out your ass!

I did state i did not know much about Canadian history but what I do know the loyalist in this country had a really tuft time of it. I did ask it as a question Alex for two hundred.the only side i was asking about was revolutionary war, and 1812 war and sometime i still wish the British would burn the capital down just remind us what was fought for in the first place. I have no miss understanding about who good Canadian troops are. you did not break ties with england until afterworld? Buy the way are economy are tied maybe to tight for Canadian own good. Well have a real Bunch of Nut jobs that are adding to are diet not cutting it. I knowing I have said this before Canadian troop career type are some of the best in the world. meet many different units in Germany during ref-forage exercise one of many reason I got out I would describe the US army at that time as a CLUSTER FUCK.

In that case, I propose Isaac Newton as the greatest human being based on secular achievements. He is almost solely responsible for the establishment of classical physics, which is the foundation for all of the science that has been developed in the last 300 year, and together with Leibniz he created calculus, which is widely used in a number of scientific fields.

For once I agree with your new approach but then I swear I bleed little red maple leaves.

Missed this earlier.
Well we never really 'Broke' ties with England. Even after Britain gave up on Empire we remained part of the British Commonwealth. Our highest court remained the British Privy Council in England until we rewrote and brought the constitution home in 1982.

Even under the new Constitution the current Queen of England also wears a second crown as the Queen of Canada. Though her actual duties as head of state are carried out by a Canadian Citizen. The last two of which were famous CBC Talking Head/Broadcasters. I'm still rooting for William Shatner but I guess that will have to wait until 2014 since Harper instead appointed some nameless party Hack this time around.

Geber full name: Abu Musa Jabir Ibn Hayyan ca. 721 - 815 AD

Geber, as he was known by the Europeans, was an Arabian alchemist who lived in what we now know as Iraq.

He distilled strong acetic acid from vinegar and believed that metals are made up of mercury and sulfur in-varying proportions. He also popularized the idea of the Philosopher's Stone which would combine the mercury and sulfur to make gold.

Geber is responsible for giving us the word 'gibberish', derived from his name!

I chose a Alchemist, because alchemy is the forefather of Metallurgy my area of expertise.

Another famous person who was a Alchemist was Sir Isaac Newton, the famous seventeenth-century mathematician and scientist, though not generally known as an alchemist, practiced the art with a passion. (he has even wrote many books on the topic.) That never got publish do to not being very popular at the time.

I'm just curious to see who comes up. But some ground rules:

(1) I'll stipulate in advance that, for you, the Great Propet, One True King, Grand Pirate of the Flying Spaghetti Monster or what have you is indeed the greatest human ever. Almost by definition, how else can it be? So to avoid a contest of 'my god is bigger than your god' I'm only interested in secular humans. All Prophets, Saints, Demi-Gods, etc need not apply.

(2) I'm interested in historical figures, real people whose identity is reasonably established by the written record. Legends don't count. Hercules, as a legendary demi-god for example is doubly disqualified. But anyone with a dubious historical pedigree such as King Arthur, Robin Hood, Prester John, had better come with some references. IE if you wish to argue that there was a real man behind the legend of king Arthur and nominate that man.. great! let's hear the argument.

(3) Obviously no characters from stories either, No Sherlock Holmes, Ali Baba, Aladdin, Baron Munchausen etc...

(4) Only one nomination per forum member at a time. If you change your mind and want to nominate someone new as the greatest please tell us why you're withdrawing your earlier nomination in favour of the new entrant.

other than that... nominate away. Who do you think is the greatest? tell us about them because we may be a little ignorant of the relevant history. And why are they the greatest?

I have to head off to work in a moment. I will make my nomination later.

I'll have to go with Eleanor Roosevelt. This woman was not the housewife first lady and sent an incredible example of a powerful woman in office in a time of unequal status among gender lines. She was smart and gained respect throughout and after her husbands presidency. She was for civil rights for black people before the 50s and 60s and went across the nation talking to the people in the country about their situations. Frankly I think "greatest human ever" is an impossible role to fill especially since human history is ongoing but she's a definate contender.
