Of course, Kimi ni Todoke is a modern classic and just one of the sweetest, no-nonsense shoujo manga and is a joy to read. Also, if you prefer more drama or struggle, and don't mind some darker subject matter [such as kidnapping, death, or cutting] LIFE is pretty much my favorite. For good dramas that span years, try Sand Chronicles or We Were There.

As for the classics, Boys Over Flowers/Hana Yori Dango and magical girl manga such as Sailor Moon and Cardcaptor Sakura ALWAYS stand the test of time for me.

And finally, a WONDERFUL under-the-radar shoujo I love is Secret Notes of Lady Kanako. Kanako is snarky, smart, has a great wit, and is just a really fresh, different protagonist. She's hilarious! Plus, it's only 3 volumes long, perfect for a rainy day's reading. All are available officially for the collectors like me who like having an awesome bookshelf!

Glass Mask - Showing the struggles and triumphs of a simple, plain girl, but incredibly talented aspiring to be an actress. Mix in all the drama of a 70's manga and an older romantic interest, you've got a classic if you can get past the old-school art. Skip Beat seems to be a secondhand rip off of this.

Red River - About a girl who is swept off to the distant past, to a dark world of corruption, magic and murder. With a heroine who is anything but annoying and actually is NOT useless. (Take that Miaka!) Not to mention it's very mature.

Banana Fish - The most un-Shoujo, Shoujo manga of all time. A crime ridden, gritty, violent, realistic tale of gang life in America. if I didn't know this was a Shoujo series I'd of thought it was Seinen. I guess the shonen-ai makes it girl friendly.

Boys Over Flowers - The classic about bullying, romance and a change of character at a high class High School is timeless.

Please Save My Earth - A lonely girl who just moved to a new town has recurring dreams that she was part of a team of alien scientists in the past.

Sensei! - The actual, realistic portrayal of a forbidden, and kept under wraps relationship between and high school girl and her teacher.

Candy Candy - The classic with the still hotly debated open ending - about an orphan girl looking to find her place in the world. Funny, tragic and heartbreaking.

Nana - Sex, drugs, music, pregnancy and rock in roll in modern Japan, with two girls who share the same name and an intertwining fate. An absolute modern classic.

Paradise Kiss - By the same author as the above manga, this coming of age story is filled with all the mistakes of a first love, running away from home and aspirations to be a model over school at a critical time in one's life.

Honey and Clover - The life and times of college students and their day to day lives. Funny, sad and bittersweet it's a slice of life and true to life (unfortunately).

Mars - Can a good girl turn bad by falling for a bad boy? Romance at it's best, it brings together two characters with painful pasts - one who is abused, the another who lost their twin sibling.

Nodame Cantible - For all the music lovers out there! The relationship between a quirky pianist and a brilliant, but arrogant wanna-be composer at a college for music.

Bara no Tame ni - Featuring an actual overweight main character, struggling with herself and a big change in her life when she moves in with the supposed mother she never knew and an assortment of quirky inhabitants including her supposed half brother that she harbors feelings for.

Petshop of Horrors - A creepy, mysterious store in the heart of Chinatown, America and the sinister, murderous happenings that surround it. Featuring a mysterious Count who might not be human and a hot-tempered detective trailing after him, it's funny, mysterious, tragic, gory and dark with one of the oddest endings. Not to mention it hints at shonen-ai a LOT.

Magical Girl

Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon - Reincarnation, time travel, incredible super powers, star crossed love, cosmic battles and some of the most memorable characters of all time -if not the most popular, well known anime/manga character of all time- this series is universally loved for a reason. There's something for everyone.

Cardcaptor Sakura - Completely adorable, sweet, and well written, featuring a little girl, her interesting companions and some very special cards with amazing magical powers. Also, check out anything by the authors - Clamp of course!

Modern Classics

Fruits Basket - A cursed family with a dark secret, and one innocent girl with who will forever change their lives in so many ways. One of the greatest mangas I have ever read. Heartfelt, deep, sad, funny, honest, and with a cast of wonderful characters.

Peach Girl - I actually didn't think I was going to like this, but it turned out far better than I anticipated. A bullied girl who is self conscious about her image and the unwanted vibes it gives off, who is constantly betrayed by her so called best friend, Momo learns to be comfortable with herself and find the person who'll accept her for who she is.

Lovely Complex - Incredibly funny, school story about a very tall (for Japan) awkward girl and a very short boy who -despite any height and friend obstacles- fall for each other.

From Far Away - One of the best swept-off-to-another-world stories I've ever read, with well rounded characters, and a wonderful, enchanting storyline.

OH, yes, seconding the mention of Lovely Complex [or LoveCom, if you prefer.] It's fantastic, funny, and just everything a shoujo romantic-comedy should be.
