Only when Kuu exited the room did Umeko dare to breathe. Coughing slightly, she took the nearest pile of papers to fan the air around her. "God damn it, what's up with him?! Did he just lock himself in the dorm and gamed for the past 2 days?!" Just remembering that initial scent of him entering the room was enough to make her gag.

Setsuna thanked Natsu for distributing the snacks before taking out her phone and searching through the contacts on point for Ryouhei since he'll probably answer his phone as opposed to Masami.

"Hello? Ryouhei-san?"

Setsuna listened patiently to what excuses he had to say. Despite the neutrality to her voice, her expression looked tired.

Putting her hand over the mic, she announced, "Ryouhei got off the wrong stop so they've been walking here. Unfortunately, they got lost and their gps isn't getting much signal."

"Setsu-chan, give me the phone." Umeko demanded with an outstretched hand. Cautiously, Setsuna complied. "Hey big guy, it's me Ume-chan." There was a mischievous glimmer in her eyes as she spoke. "Yeah, I know-- tell Masami-senpai that Kuu-kun's mother is feeding us snacks right now for free, and--"

Umeko snickered quietly before saying goodbye and passing the phone back to Setsuna with a wink. "Give them 3 minutes, they'll be here soon."

Setsuna gave her best friend a lingering look but Umeko dismissed it with a smile and a thumbs up.

"Cult?" Umeko took a bite out of the cheese and crackers provided. "Like, the animal murdering ones we caught earlier this year?" Umeko remembered all the talk about how grand and expensive Dawn Academy used to be known as. It was true that the school ended up being much... less than she expected, and talk about its downfall started overshadowing its greatness.

Umeko shrugged. "I honestly though it's because of the economy, but do you think the cult is draining the school's money for suspicious ~cult activities~?"

"That incident with animals, painful of me to say, had no actual association with that cult. Those three girls were trying to summon satan or something. While this cult is... to quote Dan's words

A cult going on for almost a decade, dedicated to a better suited god. They're extremists that want to cleanse the world of its impurities...

And if our school is really transferring their funds into a creepy god revival project... then that really isn't a coincidence."

"But, what do you think we can really do about it? We're just normal students after all." Sue piped in ironically, throwing Natsu off guard.

He shot her a puzzled look. First off, she wasn't a normal student. And second, It was HER and KEI that figured this out after all, why did she sound so dubious all of a sudden? Was she testing their willingness to get involved? Because, duh, he didn't want to get involved in this whole conspiracy theory, they already had enough on their plate... like trying not to be killed by a psychopath!!!!

The door creaked open and a strong smell of roses and herbal bath bombs poured into the room. Kuu waltzed in with a towel behind his neck and hair dripping with water. "I'm totes clean, so don't complain!" He twisted the towel, pretending to whip it at Umeko.

He dried the white part of his bangs with the towel and sat on his bed with a contemplative expression. "So, the gist of it is that Spades is using those he marks as sacrificial lambs for this almighty god of his, right? I think we're plenty involved."

"Also, I don't really wanna die. I like my blood inside of me, not outside." Kuu pointed to his bandaged finger where he got that never-ending bleeding paper cut many pages ago. "That's why we're here to figure out his weakness, and since we don't know much about him besides the fact that he's probably related to this artifact..." Kuu pulled it out from under his pillow. "Is why we're here today, right??"

"Dude, if you knew that in the first place, why'd you ask." "¯\_(ツ)_/¯"

The moment Kuu entered the room, Umeko let out an offended outburst that was so loud it even surprised her. Grabbing the nearest object next to her, she smacked Kuu repeatedly in the arm with it. "What. The. HELL??? WHY DO YOU SMELL SO GOOD????? WHAT SOAP DID YOU USE????"

Only when she started coughing from getting worked up did she stop but even then, "I'M GOING TO USE THE RESTROOM, I'LL BE RIGHT BACK!" she exited his room with no idea where his bathroom was.

Setsuna stared at the artifact in his hands, unknowingly a dubious expression on her face, but she didn't dare speak up any of the million questions that just popped up in her mind.

”Hey!" A knock from outside Kuu's room was heard, and the three boys took an empty any empty spot available for them on the floor. "Sorry we're late. We were gonna make it up to you, but my boy here ate all the fries." He held up a WcDonnald's takeout bag apologetically while taking a glance at Masami's unfazed expression. "We'll make it up to ya'll next time."

"KUU-KUN, YOU JERK HOW DO--OH MY GOD." Umeko's eyes zoomed in on the takeout bag in Ryouhei's hand.

"Sorry Ube, I ate it."

"OF COURSE YOU DID!" Umeko let out another frustrated sound. With her mood practically ruined, she hit Ryouhei with the object still in her hand and took her seat besides Setsuna.

"Did your mother already inspect it?" Setsuna asked, already starting to get out of her seat. "Or should we ask her to come in?"

"Ow, ow, ow! Not my Detective Otano figurine! It's a limited edition!" Kuu cried out and hugged the object after Umeko smacked Ryouhei with it.

"It's kind of cramped in here now." With like 7 bodies here now it was getting stuffy and hot. "I don't think his mom inspected it yet. She mentioned that when we arrived and she didn't even know we were coming OR where her son was." Natsu shot Kuu a glare of impending doom.

"Uh, I'll go ask her. Brb." Kuu crouched off his bed slowly and ran out, safely avoiding the topic.

Even with one less body in Kuu's room, it was still hot, so Natsu opened the window wide and hung half his body outside the frame.

"You fools took so loong." Sue stretched her hands backwards and yawned. "You guys missed out on the really yummy cafe food we ate earlier, right?" She nodded at Setsuna and Umeko.

Just as Sue was speaking there was a loud crashing sound coming from downstairs and Kuu's mom yelling hysterically.

Umeko was thinking the same thing as Natsu was. Looking up, she groaned at the fact that Kuu didn't have a ceiling fan to help cool things down.

"Oh." Masami didn't look the slightest affected by what Sue said, which was strangely uncharacteristic. "I would have to spend money if I went, but Roe cooked 40 crepes and McDonnalds for free so I'm satisfied."

Kimmie wrote a whole giant wall of text and interactions but since a giant sound suddenly appeared, all of that didn't happen and the conversation was suddenly hauled.

”Woah, what was that?" The sound made Ryouhei jump in his seat and he smiled humorously at how startled he was. Opening the door, he leaned outside into the hallway to catch Kuu's mother's voice echoing inside. "Woah..." He turned back inside with his smile now uneasy. "Anyone wanna go check that out?"

Umeko crawled behind him and leaned her head inside to hear what was going on. "Uh...." Her smile mimicked Ryouhei's as she turned her head towards the others. "I think I'm good for now."

"Maybe Zucchini should go. He should bring me a sandwich while he's down there too."

"Don't you care about what's going to happen to me???!" Kazuki cried to which none of the three answered verbally to, other than a sympathetic shrug and smile from Umeko and Ryouhei. Suppressing any more outbursts, he floated out of the doorway since no one else looked willing to do it.

"If I don't make it back..." Kazuki turned around dramatically with big, sparkly, bishounen eyes. "I want to let all you beautiful ladies know... that I love you all." With a single tear falling from his face, he sacrificed himself and went downstairs to check what's going on.

Setsuna was still in her half-sitting, half-up state. She honestly would have went along if the majority of the people decided they wanted to go check it out, but since most of the group opted not to... she knelled down into a full sitting position and internally wished Kazuki good luck.

As much as Natsu didn't want to butt into other people's family matters, that crashing sound disturbed him. "I'll go check too." Natsu sighed as he lazily summoned up all his upper body strength and pulled himself out of the window frame. Honestly, he just wanted out of this sauna.

"Ooo. Good luck, Natsu-senpai, Kazuki-kun!" There was Sue again, still seemingly unbothered much.

Just as Natsu was about to reach the last steps of the stairs, their voices picked up again, Kuu's mother's voice in a frantic whisper.

"Where did you get this?" She questioned Kuu, her hands tightly wrapped around his collar as she pulled him forward and nearly lifted him off the ground. The artifact was rolling on the floor— the obvious source of the loud crashing sound. You'd expect it to be broken in shambles, but the artifact was still perfectly intact. "It's not possible... how did you get ahold of this..."

"Um, ma, calm down a little please?" Kuu tried to soothed her explosive emotions down, but that just agitated her even more. From the corner of his eyes, he caught Natsu and Kazuki peeking on them. "Help-me-call-child-services." He mouthed jokingly despite the alarming situation.

Back over to the group upstairs in Kuu's room, still unaware what was truly going on, Sue tried to lighten up the mood. "So, how was initiation? Besides 40 crepes and wacdonalds... uh ew. I pray for your stomach."

"Uh..." Kazuki's voice lowered to a whisper even though most normal people wouldn't be able to hear him unless he tried hard enough anyway. If this was a girl in trouble, hell yeah he would go and rescue her, but since this is Kuu... and his mother looked mighty threatening holding up like that...

"You wanna go and uh... do something?" He took a nervous glance at Natsu. It would be kinda messy if he were to interfere since he's a ghost, but if Natsu was in on doing something, he'd help. If he wanted to gun it though... he'd be 100% with that too.

Masami rubbed his stomach lazily with a small, satisfied nod. "Satisfactory. I give bonus points for the Wacdonalds."

”Because of this big guy, I'm gonna be living off instant ramen and tap water for the next month!" Ryouhei laughed but his eyes brimmed a little with tears as months worth of paychecks literally went down Masami's black hole of a stomach.

"Wasn't it like 30 crepes though??? Why did you make 10 extra and buy him Wacdonalads??"

"I was still hungry."

Umeko stared at Masami simultaneously in disbelief and yet, not, because this is exactly the sort of thing he would do if given the chance. The fact that he actually went with it though and drained Ryouhei's wallet dry... She gave Ryouhei a sympathetic pat on the back as he laughed morbidly to himself.

While everyone was doing their own thing, Setsuna was on the point app checking her messages. Ryouhei and the others just arrived, leaving only Kei and Tera mysteriously left behind. She wasn't comfortable with the aspect of drawing attention to this if no one else has done it either, and she doesn't enjoy confronting other people, but as the pseudo-leader(?) of this trip, she was entrusted to make sure everyone arrives here eventually.

Natsu understood why the twerp was as strong as he was with a mother like that. He almost didn't hear Kazuki speaking to him since he was so focused on the odd scene unfolding before his eyes. Maybe he really should call child services.

"Let the kid work it out himself. I don't think family matters are something we should intervene in... " Did this really count as a normal family arugement thought?? "But, could you get everyone down—" He paused for a minute thinking about how rowdy everyone else was and the fact that Ryouhei was new and didn't exactly get briefed on what was going on. "Actually, just call Uyemura-chan down."

Natsu decided that was probably the best decision.

Well, Natsu did have a point with the whole 'family intervention' thing, but the idea of letting that beautiful delicate flower into this mess... he didn't like it, but once he thought about it, she looked like one of the more reasonable ones in the group. She'll be able to deal with this mess. Probably.

That was... one of the most ominous messages Setsuna has ever received in her life, quite frankly.Whatever expression was forming on her face, she quickly smoothed it out before it became noticeable. Amid everyone's light-hearted conversation, noise built in her mind as question after question without answer piled up one after another.

Taking a deep breath, she forced them to a muffle before replying.

"Shiro-senpai said he and Tera-san can't make it.'

"Really?" Umeko sighed heavily. Disappointed, but not surprised. "Did he say why?"

"No, but he seemed busy when I messaged him." She closed her phone turned the screen downwards before Umeko could shuffle to peak at it behind her back.

"Uyemura-chan~" Kazuki called for her in a sing-song voice, but the melody was laced with clear discomfort. "If you would be so kind to accompany Natsu and me downstairs?"

The nervous tone to his voice did nothing to calm the turmoil in her mind, but she pushed the added worry back with the rest of the million other buzzing thoughts. "Y-Yes, I'll come with you." Although wobbly from sitting down for a while, Setsuna made her way downstairs to come upon the problematic scene with Kuu and his mother.

As much as she wanted to keep her thoughts to herself, this clearly was not a good time to do it.

"Natsu-senpai," Setsuna switched uneasily between him and the two. She opened her mouth to say more, but she couldn't find the right words to express concern over the situation.

"Uyemura-chan, do you think we should––"

"Hey. I know you're over there listening."

Well, their cover was blown almost immediately.

Natsu sweated nervously and revealed himself to Kuu and Kuu's mother. Much to his surprise, her initial skepticism had faded away and what was left was an undecipherable emotion swirling in her eyes. She let go of Kuu's collar and sighed heavily.

"Just follow me... I don't know how you guys got your hands on that artifact, but it was something both me and... my husband wanted to forget."

She ushered all of them to a room at the end of the hallway and hesitantly inserted a key before twisting the knob.

Kuu followed silently after his mother and mouthed I don't know what'a going on to Setsuna and Natsu, but he was obviously excited despite the sullen look on his mother's face.

When the door opened it was pitch black. Kuu's mother easily maneuvered her way through the dark room despite that and switched on a lamp.

Papers and photos covered every inch on the wall and left nothing bare. The papers were old notes scribbled in numerous of languages and the photos had faded with age and were barely recognizable.

There was a particular photo that stood out amongst the rest. It was group of 8 people—2 women, 4 men, and 2 younger boys around 11 – 13 years of age. Everyone either had black or white hair and stood with each other by their hair colour.

One of boys' faces were scribbled out with a dark marker while one of the men's face was torn off... the other boy's face whose wasn't torn off looked familiar despite the black hair... kind of like a certain redhead shinigami who loves to nap.

"What's up with this photo? Why is dad with these weird people?" Kuu pointed to one of the men in the photo.

Setsuna and Kazuki were thinking the same thing while following Kuu's mother into the dark room: should they be seeing this?

"Not like I can really turn back though..." Kazuki muttered, despite mostly having the ability to control who can hear him or not.

Once inside, he allowed himself to wander about although staying relative close in case something comes out to kill him... or something. From the old photos to the indecipherable writings, each new discovery only made Kazuki more uneasy and skeptical of both Kuu and his mother.

He did not think he was getting into some cult shit here.

Kazuki paused for a second, because Kimmie does not remember if Natsu told him they were dealing with some cult shit here. For the meantime, Kimmie will assume he did. Kazuki is not happy with this outcome.

Yeah, his hommie Masami told him he was in some sci-fi detective club but hey, so was Detective Conan and that little dude did some cool stuff!!! But this???? Even though he's dead, there are far scarier things than ghosts out there and he does not want to mess with them.

What does this mean.

What does this mean.

It seems that Setsuna will never catch a break and she will be left in a perpetual state of confusion and fear... The sight of a very handsome man with dark hair coupled with Kuu's comment only added to the mental confusion. It doesn't help that Kei had mentioned a similar looking handsome man through text just previously.

Though, trying to make sense of this new item of information might be futile considering how little she knows, she couldn't help but wonder: If the man in the photo is Clover (without the red hair dye), where's Spades? Clover and him were ex-gods, and are almost joint in association.

"Does anyone know the wifi?"

"No," Umeko groaned while sprawling herself on the floor. "I should have asked before Kuu-kun left."

Unlocking her phone, she checked the time before returning to her state of dead. "Hey... they've been gone for a while now. Should we uh... check on them... or something? I kinda don't want to die though..."

"Wifi is for the weak. Unlimited data is where it's all at. If you guys want an amazing 8GB data plan tell me, I can hook you up. You just need to sign a strict contract with me. Nothing suspicious at all." The words flew out so naturally it was hard to tell if Sue was kidding or if she was actually trying to get her fellow club members to sign a slave contract.

"I guess we should check on them.. it's been kinda quiet... they could be dead." Sue whispered to the others and reached for the nearest weapon lying around... Kuu's limited edition Otano figurine.

"Wait." Natsu peered closer at the photo and pushed Kuu's prying hands away as he inspected the faces of everyone in the picture. The ink was quite smudged, but besides Clover, three of these people looked or seemed familiar to Natsu too.

"Stop hogging, dude!" Kuu swiped the photo so that both he and Setsuna could see it more clearly. "Huh... doesn't one of the girls look like Tera... and that guy looks like that Anwar guy."

He turned the photo around and in order everyone's name was written.

On the first line: Ace, Jack, Queen, King. (White-haired) The second line: Hearts, Diamond, Spades, Clover. (Black-haired)

"What. Why are their hair colours different?" Yes, Kuu, always asking the important questions.

Natsu raised his folded fingers to his lips and pressed against it. His face went pale when a realization hit him. The boy whose face was scribbled out seemed familiar to him because of.....

...that boy was Spades though... but that boy was also.... No. Spades couldn't be Dan. He shook his head. He was just overthinking this.

”Depends how much I have to pay for free data. My phone bill ain't cheap." Ryouhei shrugged, having played a free game on his phone to occupy himself these past few posts.

"I don't care about Poo and Nuts, but Tuna gave me food..." Masami frowned. Getting up, he stepped outside presumably to find where the others went..... However, he was actually making his way to the kitchen and completely ignored the suspicious dark room that was opened for all to see.

"Na--" Umeko thought Sue was joking at first, but after witnessing Kuu's mother's strength first hand an hour-ish ago... Setsuna and the others actually being dead didn't seem so far fetched.

"Actually," Umeko took a pillow in both hands, "if it's 4 against 1, we should be able to outnumber her, right?"

"Come on, we're just at Kuu's house!" Stepping outside Kuu's room, he made his way downstairs without a hint of worry or hesitation. "What's the worst that could--"

The moment he saw the dark room at the end of the hallway, Ryouhei started to laugh nervously. "I-I'll ju-just pretend I didn't see that. They're probably in the kitchen like Masami-kun, right? Having a good jolly ol' time, right???" Slowly, he started backing away. "Hey!!! Bro--"

"Poo's mother's cooking is better than yours." Masami spoke from where he was in the kitchen. Other than his voice and Ryouhei, the only sounds that could be heard came from upstairs where Sue and Umeko were and in that very suspicious room at the end of the hallway.

Since everyone else was crowding around that photo, it must be something important, right??? Except, Kazuki has only been here for like... 3 days, maybe. The faces looked vaguely familiar, but he wasn't here long enough to process the importance this photo held.

He wasn't sure if that was a good thing or not.

It is confirmed that somehow, Clover and Spades and all the other gods... are associated with Kuu's father. Which is indirectly associated with Kuu. What does this mean? Setsuna's head was starting to feel light and dizzy.

... What does this mean? Is it ok for her to be here?

The more she looked at the photo, the more she dwelled on it, the more she felt like she really was stumbling into something she shouldn't be going into. Once her eyes landed on Spades, the scribbled out lines barely gave hint to whom layed underneath. Although familiar, she's only seen the face a couple of times and was not in the best mental condition to think deeply on whom it belonged to.

Her eyes flickered at Natsu and then Kuu to gauge their reaction. Yes, they came here to uncover some information on Spades so they can counterattack him, but now that they're actually uncovering something... She's not sure if she could take in something so much larger than herself. She's only 15.

"Why are they so stupid?" Sue groaned and rolled her eyes back while trying to fight off a giggle. "Don't make a mess!" She shouted after Ryouhei and Masami and followed after... only to misplace her footing on the stairs just before tumbling down and dragging her bloodied chin across each steps. You're a holy being, Sue. Don't cry. Don't cry. She reminded herself with tears welling in her eyes as she laid in a daze at the bottom of the stairwell.

"Umekocchi it looks safe... ish... down here... no need to ambush the mama bear. Oh. Be careful of the stairs though. And of a dark, spooky room just further ahead of the hallway."

If Natsu had the abilities to see ghosts, his eyes would have darted over to Kazuki and they would've exchanged equally troubled glances... But, unfortunately Hatsu was the only one in the family that inherited their father's cursed spiritual power. Assuming, Natsu was actually making eye contact with Kazuki though, he muttered softly to just hold on for now and that he'll bring him to Hatsu's real grave soon.

"Okay, ma'am. You can't just show us all this and go silent. You owe us an explanation."

He didn't want to come off as disrespectful, but what in the fuck was going on? He side-eyed Kuu who seemed immersed in the mystery rather than confused and frustrated like he was and shook his head.

"This was my husband's study." She breathed out a sigh with her chest sunken low before collapsing tiredly into an old, brittle chair. "My husband... Ryuu... or Ryuusaki if you wanted to be formal, he never really explained what all of this was to me."

"For years he would lock himself in this room and wouldn't allow me or the boys in it. It wasn't until after his death that I saw the contents and I was just as surprised as you all were. Nothing made sense... The only thing I could really make out were the drawings. They were sketches of the ruins where we first met... you see, it was about 16 years ago when I went on an excursion on one of Japan's lost islands and stumbled into Ryu. That was our first meeting."

"No offence, but we didn't ask about your love story." Natsu intercepted, visibly and verbally running out of patience. "You should get to the p–– OW!"

Kuu stepped on Natsu's foot and beckoned his mother go on. "You were saying?"

"To make a long story short. It was odd. He wasn't supposed to be there. Even to this day I never knew how he got into the middle of the tomb without any proper gear or equipment. I put our strange meeting to rest and forgot about it... up until now." Kuu's mother fiddled with the artifact in her hands and scrutinized each and every line etched into its design. "Have you noticed? The drawings on the wall is the same as the one on this artifact. I've been researching it for years and still couldn't decipher its meaning. I've come up with theories, but all in all... theories are just speculations humans come up with when they can't find hard evidence."

"If there's anything more you would like to know, I'll try my best to answer, but I have questions myself. How did you kids get ahold of this...? Something even I couldn't get my hands on. Are you involved in anything... dangerous?"

“Boys are always stupid.” Umeko giggled. Only to laugh even harder when Sue stumbled down the stairs. Watching out for the blood stains, she quickly made her way downstairs to check up on her.

“What happened?! Did you wanna join the party so badly? It’s only Ryouhei-kun and Masami-senpai down here. It isn’t that lit.”

“Excuuuuussseeee me! I guess I know when I’m needed.” Ryouhei gave her the most dramatic turn around and pretended to walk out the door.

“By the way…” Umeko’s tone slowly lost its humor. “What was that about a spooky room in the hallway again?”

“Poo’s mom is probably in there.” To no one’s surprise, Masami came into view with what was presumably a giant bowl of fish curry, but the contents were almost completely eaten. “I can’t find the chips so I’m gonna ask.”

Natsu was not looking at the direction Kazuki was, but Kazuki heard the words he said under his breath. Uneasily, he muttered a “thanks” right back. These kids really got it rough, it made him wonder… if Hatsu’s younger brother has mixed himself in these sorts of events, did Hatsu also…? And if she did, is that why she…

Suddenly, a greater sense of worry overcame him. “Death” didn’t seem like such a far away concept now, even though they were tiptoeing around it these past 3-ish days. It became a very real thing. Today or tomorrow, one of these kids might end up like him - their lives cut short, seeing their friends grow older and older while they stay the same, unable to make contact with most people besides the few that can see you… unable to help people through physical means - or perhaps, even worse. He might have arrived originally to help out with the school festival (and to see Hatsu’s grave), but now he felt the responsibility to keep these kids alive.

But how can he when he’s just a ghost? A bystander at best?

Setsuna might faint. This is too much to take in too quickly. Too many questions, too little answers. And it is verified that somehow, Kuu is related to one of the gods they’re involved with.

It was as if each new piece of information materialized in mid-air and weighed down on her - pushing her to her mental limits as she scrambled to make sense of them. Of course, nothing made sense. There were too many puzzles pieces to find where to start. Too many missing in this set. How can she, a mere mortal teenage girl, ever understand something this convoluted and out of her control?

That last question felt like a pendulum swinging a giant axe above her head. She could almost hear it cutting the air with each massive swing from one end of the room to the other. And with each passing second, the axe lowered itself towards her. Closer, and closer...

Not so luckily (anymore), she thought ahead beforehand about this question in case Kuu’s mother was curious. After considering the options, she found answering vaguely such as “we went on a field trip and found this interesting” to be the best answer to keep his mother safe and as distant from their affairs as possible. She’s not sure if that tactic will work anymore. She’s not sure how to lower his mother’s suspicion while providing a believable response. At the moment, she knows she can’t.

“No, Miss. Shugyoku, everything is fine. We are just curious, that’s all.”

With everything considered… this was the only answer she could safely give.

Maybe you’re the dangerous one~ Kazuki thought almost on instinct but he knew better than to say that outloud. Unable to provide a better response than Setsuna, he whispered, “Nice save!!” and gave her a nervous thumbs up.

“Miss Poo,” Masami, with no regard towards anyone else, had his phone flashlight on and completely flashed everyone’s eyes with it. “The fish curry is delicious. Do you have any chips? I’m still hungry.”

From the other side of the hallway, Umeko and Ryouhei’s voices could be heard outside calling him back for this is the perfect setup for a murder scene in a horror movie.

With that last hit of nonsense, Setsuna’s vision darkened until she fell onto the floor unconscious.
