For the most part people usually dislike covers especially ones that take the original song out of context or take too many liberties with it. I practically popped a vein when Carrie Underwood trivialized the The Pretenders classic "I'll Stand By You."

However, every now and then there are covers that do nearly as good or match even with the original. A great example would be the Nine Inch Nails song "Hurt" that was covered by Johnny Cash in his later years.

But What about covers that are superior to the source material or even fix mistakes the original had?

That is what this thread is for. Covers that are better than the original source. Please back up your claims with writing. No one likes that guy who just posts the band names and song title. Give a reason as to why you believe what you do of a certain song. Also if possible provide links to both versions of the songs you write about. Not everyone knows your music and it's nice to let them hear the differences instead of you just claiming it. I'll give two examples

1. Purple Haze by Jimi Hendrix covered by Kronos Quartet
Before you try to crucify me for holding this opinion let me just say I LOVE Jimi Hendrix and Purple haze is a great song. The guitar work is great and it's a captivating song. However I always thought the lyrics were..... weak. They're ambiguous and don't really talk about much of anything. Jimi has much better lyrics in other songs of his such as "The Wind Cries Mary." Kronos Quartet rectifies this by just being an instrumental band. Also as great as the guitar sounded the violins and cello sound even better to me because they can play off eachother all on the same part as string instruments instead of just one of them carrying all the weight. It's also not a structure one usually finds in classical music and the fact it's being played on those instruments contributes to the wow factor of the cover. Here are the links

2. (Can't Get No) Satisfaction by The Rolling Stones covered by PJ Harvey and Björk
Here's another one classic rock fans will hate me for. This song has incredible lyrics about being jaded and unhappy with life in general. Problem is I don't think the tone of the words is matched by the music or Mick Jaggers "singing". It's too upbeats and the monotone delivery of the lyrics drives me nuts. The "singing" style might be an interpretation of the lyrics in which the speaker is bored and that's what causes him to be so down and out, but is that really a characterization that draws you in? It just never worked for me. And then I saw PJ Harvey and Björk's cover and I was blown away. I've been a fan of both these women for about two years now. I knew they respected eachother's work but I had no idea they ever collaborated until I was bored and typed both their names in youtube at once. What I got was a chance pairing made for the 1995 Brit Awards by the organizers. The song sung by them is great. PJ Harvey is on acoustic guitar and Björk on synth.

It starts out with PJ Harvey's slow cigarette burn tone in the lower register over a few repeated chords on the guitar. It's a simple yet wonderful approach. PJ ads a dark sensibility making the song sound as jaded as the lyrics suggest. It also helps that she actually has some inflection in her voice. Björk also adds her touch with some unobtrusive synth that adds more atmosphere to the song. She sings back up layering her odd voice over top in a breathy tone that changes to snarl in an instant. It sounds great. This is how this song should have sounded in the original. Some personality. Some acidity. This pair transformed a rather flighty song into something meaty and intense. Say what you want about the greatness of the Stones, but no one is perfect and this rendition of their song is definately a change for the better.

I must disagree on the second one, but I think it is because I don't like Björk.

Anyway:

Light My Fire by The Doors; Covered by Jose Feliciano.

I really prefer Feliciano's voice to that of Morrison's. The acoustic guitar gives it a much lovelier feeling.

Okay I'm about to commit music blasphemy...

1. Metallica's "Orion" covered by guitarist duo Rodrigo and Gabriela. Though I appreciate the awesome electrically charge original, Rodrigo and Gabriel's to me seems more earthy and deceptively simple in it presentation (if your not seeing them play it). I love how they use their guitars.

2. The Beatle's "Because" cover by Melody Gardot. Gotta be honest though I really like the simple lyrics, the Beatles harmonizing to a harpsichord doesn't do it for me. Melody on the other hand sheeesh. Her bluesy ethereal voice is perfect and her guitarist is 100 times better than the synths the original song employs.

3. Wayne Cochran "Last Kiss" covered by Pearl Jam. The original is too upbeat for the subject matter. Peal Jam's version seems to get it both in vocal and instrumental resonance. Funny 'cuz Cochran wrote it.

Bonus cover : Spanish version cover by Polo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Fk8vKVA1-s <----The first version I ever heard.

There are so many other but I'll stop here.

Charice covers Miley Cyrus's The Climb.

Reason: It was better because Charice's voice was softer and with strength. And she can express emotions through singing it.

Charice's Cover live: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WRwGoMsQMOU

As for the original, I just think Miley sounds like she's covering her nose when she sings. She can sing but I just don't like the way she sounds when she sings. I don't know if ya want a better explanation but that's all I'm gonna say.

Though I dislike the song itself Charice is definately better than Miley. I honestly think Miley can't sing. She always sounds sharp and her breath support is horrendous.

Even her dad wasn't that great at it though. I mean who actually listens to I Want My Mullet Back because they think it's a great song?
