I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned but there is a very good, free, but short VN doing the rounds on the internet over the past week called don't take it personally, babe, but it's not your story. http://scoutshonour.com/donttakeitpersonallybabeitjustaintyourstory/ It's thoughtful and twists a lot of VN/anime tropes.

Just a day or two from this writing, you'll be able to pre-order Winter Wolves' next game, Remember Me. As you'll learn from this blog post -- http://www.winterwolves.net/blog/2011/03/every-moment-of-your-life-is-a-simulation/ -- Remember Me will be a worksafe, simulation-driven, reverse harem game for PC, Mac, and Linux. It's been written in English over the last few months by a small team of fans, and it's just about ready for release.

Well, all the best have pretty much been mentioned already; everything by TYPE-MOON, Ever17, things like that. From the "indie" scene, I would recommend Narcissu (http://narcissu.insani.org/) and A Dream Of Summer (http://at2006.haeleth.net/game.php?id=16). I enjoyed reading through both of them, and they're quite well made.

So far I've only played Clannad visual novel...its kinda like the story, but you have to finish all the routes and collect all 8 light orbs (the light orbs represent each persons happiness). But I suggest finish all the other peoples routes before Nagisa's because after you finish the nagisa route, you unlock the After Story, but then there are certain things you need to do in the After Story to get the true ending.

and I've also played this dating sim, its also like a visual novel, Its called Fading Hearts! :D

I've been meaning to give Fading Hearts a try. I've heard it described as an experimental game with some complex gameplay.

But if anyone's looking for a VN with something different, then try out the freeware game Heartache 101 ~Sour into Sweet~. It includes statistics and "dice-rolling" gameplay which effectively generates random events and meetings with NPCs. The creator is enabling fans to mod the game with their own characters, events, music, etc. Look for it on rpgmaker.net.

999 on the DS is my favorite so far, ESPECIALLY when you get to the 'true' ending...

I'm TRYING to learn Japanese so that I can play more of those untranslated Japanese visual novels. My studies aren't doing so well atm and I'm sort of procrastinating now >_>

I'm currently playing Cure Girl (very new untranslated title), partly playing and partly to help with my Japanese studies, though I find myself relying on my AGTH more rather then studying... Gah..

What exactly do you mean? Are you looking for games with a file size of 4 GB or more?

If you ask me, file size and game/story quality are rarely if ever related. For instance, my most recent purchase was Go Go Nippon. I liked the art and presentation, and the writing was decent. File size was a few hundred MB. But I've also been enjoying some freeware visual novels such as Heartache 101 ~Sour Into Sweet~ and (P)lanets! The former has lots of intriguing gameplay and modding potential, and the latter is a rather cute reverse harem story. Both of them are under 100 MB in size.

try princess waltz.

to answer the topic question Kara No Shoujo (Girl in the shell). it's one of the deepest in terms of story I've ever read eroge or other wise. Innocent grey nailed it. there's a sequel in the works. can't wait for it.

I've played Hakuouki and Hakuouki Zuisoroku (in Japanese). I'm currently playing Hakuouki Reimeiroku (Japanese) and Katawa Shoujo (English)... Hmmm, what else was good... Nise no Chigiri (J) had some great art; Hiiro no Kakera (J) isn't a bad series either. Musketeer le Sang Des Chevaliers(J) I heard was good. I've played Togainu no Chi (a BL visual novel) and it was fantastic in terms of art and was a nice change, but oh lordy did the anime suck...

I'd have to say that my favorite so far is Hakuouki Reimeiroku.
