What exactly do you mean? Are you looking for games with a file size of 4 GB or more? If you ask me, file size and game/story quality are rarely if ever related. For instance, my most recent purchase was Go Go Nippon. I liked the art and presentation, and the writing was decent. File size was a few hundred MB. But I've also been enjoying some freeware visual novels such as Heartache 101 ~Sour Into Sweet~ and (P)lanets! The former has lots of intriguing gameplay and modding potential, and the latter is a rather cute reverse harem story. Both of them are under 100 MB in size. |

try princess waltz. to answer the topic question Kara No Shoujo (Girl in the shell). it's one of the deepest in terms of story I've ever read eroge or other wise. Innocent grey nailed it. there's a sequel in the works. can't wait for it. |

I've played Hakuouki and Hakuouki Zuisoroku (in Japanese). I'm currently playing Hakuouki Reimeiroku (Japanese) and Katawa Shoujo (English)... Hmmm, what else was good... Nise no Chigiri (J) had some great art; Hiiro no Kakera (J) isn't a bad series either. Musketeer le Sang Des Chevaliers(J) I heard was good. I've played Togainu no Chi (a BL visual novel) and it was fantastic in terms of art and was a nice change, but oh lordy did the anime suck...
I'd have to say that my favorite so far is Hakuouki Reimeiroku. |

Please be a bit more specific, Decaying Domo. Let us know what types of media you enjoy, and what you're looking for. What do you want in terms of story and/or gameplay? |

I'm new to this genre and I've always wondered what the difference is between a dating sim game and a visual novel. I think the closest games I have ever played to these two genres would be Persona 3 and Sakura Wars: So Long My Love (oh, hey Subaru).
I'm also wondering if there are any of these types of games that specifically focus on teaching the player Japanese. I've looked through everyone's suggestions and I think http://www.jbox.com/product/MG006 (Go! Go! Nippon!) caught my eye as a sort of introduction to Japan kinda gimmick. I don't know if the game's quality and experience is good enough for trying this genre out for the first time. I wouldn't want to be put off from this genre from one bad apple. |

I don't know if the game's quality and experience is good enough for trying this genre out for the first time. I wouldn't want to be put off from this genre from one bad apple. I bought and read through Go Go Nippon. Not bad, but the writing was not exactly compelling. It has a little bit of gameplay, but it's rather inconsequential. (I'd describe Persona 3 and 4 as about 85% gameplay and 15% reading. Sakura Wars 5 is about 60% gameplay. A lot of the visual novels in my collection are 99% reading.) I can't think of any edutainment VNs which is in English that will actually help you learn Japanese. A couple projects with similar ideas have been discussed on the Lemma Soft forums, but so far, neither one has a demo... Anyway, if you're looking to try something new, consider some freeware options. For example, Heartache 101 ~Sour into Sweet~ will work on any halfway decent Windows computer. It's a worksafe romance game with lots of stats, a dice game that generates random events, and an introduction sequence that can be entirely skipped. Find it at http://heartache101.3eeweb.com . You can find some much more simple freeware in the Renai Archive at renai.us. If you're willing to try an indie game, then consider what the people at Sakura River and Winter Wolves have made. The former group has created Fading Hearts (combination of romance game, RPG, and simulation) and Infinite Game Works (a cute simulation about making indie games). The latter group has created two games that fuse western RPG concepts with a 2D visual novel, as well as Spirited Heart (life sim with two sets of romance options) and the two Flower Shop games (relationships mixed with schedule management and gardening). |

Thanks for the feedback I will check it out.
One last thing, what is the difference between a dating sim game and a visual novel. Are dating sim games visual novels that involve romance and a certain style of gameplay/progression? Or are they entirely different genres? How would you categorize Persona 3, Heartache 101, Sakura Wars, and something like 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors? Thanks |
