I lived at Kadena AFB for a bit with my parents. USAF. I really enjoyed my time there and when my GF and I get married we are planning on flying together for our honeymoon. For anyone who has been to Hawaii it is sorta like that but alot better.

Wow, only 8 posts about Okinawa? C'mon, people!

So much to talk about! About how Okinawa was once independent from Japan, how Imperial Japan colonized the Ryukyu Islands and its people, the years of discrimination and cultural genocide against Okinawans, the Battle of Okinawa, issues revolving around the U.S. Military Bases, its unique language and music and food... GO!

I visit Okinawa once a year for a few days. Land in Naha, travel around a bit. See some of the old stuff and go to some depressing WW2 locations before enjoying the remainder of my vacation on a beach.

Okinawa is beautiful. It doesn't look or feel like Japan (as in from the main islands of Japan). It has somewhat of a foreign feel to it while still feeling a little Japanese. It's understandable considering it's history.

It's definitely a nice place to visit. I don't think I'd want to live there, though.

Nope and until the US gets the fuck out of Okinawa, it's best I not. That is where the largest amount of US hostility out of all Japan is(though, it is till the minority of people who hate the US)

I can't tell if you're trolling or... trolling. I looked at your profile which really has me wondering if you're trolling lol. It's a slight digression, but it isn't remotely easy to become a Japanese citizen. Only a handful of people have done it.

Wow man that's kind of harsh dont you think? I live in Okinawa (Im not in the military) and my fiance is Okinawan and her family is part of the political group who wishes to have less bases in Okinawa, but do you know what they really dislike unfortunately, people like you. There are quite a few Americans here in both mainland and Okinawa (I've lived in both) who come to Japan to, as you put it become Japanese and bash their home country. From my discussions with and my personal experiences with my family and friends here, they dislike your type even more. They don't understand how you can easily just throw away your culture and homeland like that. They have no problem with foreigners becoming Japanese citizens but those who talk the way you do really get under their skin. One more thing I need to add is that the US will never leave Okinawa and the citizens here know that. What they want is less bases here because there are too many which most people agree on. Okinawa is a small island but has like 13-15 military bases on it, so of course they would want less, but they know their economy will plummet if the US left. The US pays to use that land and they pay pretty damn well, not to mention all the money Americans spend here in Okinawa. So if you are waiting until the US leaves Okinawa you might as well never come and word of advice you might want to reconsider your (legal) name before you come to Japan, you might spark some unwanted attention from Japanese locals who feel the same way as you do about America and Japan, and I can assure you that they are a group who won't be looking to make friends.

It's also a very good place to have an army base in the case that something happens in the East (be it protection from a certain country (coughNKOREAcough) or some sort of natural disaster (coughFUKUSHIMAcough). Help can be more immediate. Yes, it's also a good idea for the army bases to remain there so that America can keep an eye on China (since it's been doing some shady things lately) but it's also good to have it nearby for protection. Japan doesn't have a standing army. It has some military and some naval ships--but they can only use them as defense.

Whether American army bases are in Japan or not is not my decision. The Japanese government still sees some use out of it, and America seems keen on paying the money to stay--so I don't see the harm in it. Besides, you can go to Okinawa and never run into American army personnel. To avoid a place because it has American army places is just stupid. You might as well choose another country to live in. You'd be surprised how much of your money goes back to America from the normal things you buy in Japan from stores. Be careful, Otaku2012.
