Some Moments in His Career:

-Toride, an ordinary student, the supporting role in "Asunaro Hakusho"(1993) made Takuya popular, even far more popular than the leading actors. The very ugly, thick black rimmed glasses he wore in the series sold like hot cakes. (1993)

-Won the "Ishihara Yujiro Newcomer Award" for his performance in his film debut "Shoot". (Dec. 28, 1994)
Topped Anan magazine's "Favorite Man", the Japanese most famous vote. So far, he has been voted the "favorite man" 14 times consecutively until 2007 and will not be included from next year. (1994)

-In 1995, he became the official spokesperson for Air Cushion. The ad of him posing half-naked became a phenomenon in Japan. Fans ripped the posters off walls and metrostations to take home. Air Cushion printed out thousands of copies but when it didn't help, guards were put in front of the poster 24/7.

-"Kimutaku", the abbreviation of his full name which had been popularly known in Japan, was later added to the "Encyclopedia of Contemporary Words". He became a phenomenal hit which was called the "Kimutaku Phenomenon", creating an economic impact in total of 152 billion JPY in one year. Source: by Dentsu Communication Institute Inc. (1995)

-Went down in Japanese Advertising history as the face of Kanebo (Testimo II), the first male star to advertise female cosmetics in Asia. The brand's sales figures nearly tripled within a single month since the launch of the campaign, and with 3 millions de Testimo II sold in two months. (Feb. 16, 1996)

-Won his first Japanese Drama Academy Awards as Best Actor for "Long Vacation", in which he played a young shy pianist called Sena who falls in love with an older woman, became a phenomenal hit. Thousands of men went to take up piano lessons. The apartment building which Sena lived in became a scenic spot, nicknamed "Sena Mansion". While the series was being broadcast on Monday nights nine o’clock, people all stayed home to watch the series, and this phenomenon was called "Monday 9 No Out". From then on, every series of Takuya became a big hit and topped the TV ratings. (1996)

-Accepted invite of "Gohatto" for a young samurai whose beauty lights up the entire garrison, prompting a violent sequence of events. But the directer Nagisa Oshima suddenly had an apoplectic fit. When the movie moved off again three years later, Takuya was occupied. Oshima later said that was his biggest regret. (1996)

-Conflicts arise often between Takuya and his stingy, dominating agency Johnny's Entertainment. There had been persistent rumours that he would go independent. On 12 December 1996, Takuya published a photobook masterminded by himself and published by his own company, undertaken by his father. A unique episode, the first of its kind in J agency's history and the last. Although the photobook titled "Kimura Takuya" was a great success, Takuya's own agency soon disappeared. The photobook also caused a stir in other countries. As well as being claimed "King of JE" he's also called the "Rebel of JE". In 1994, despite the JE rule against wearing earring (which is no longer true today), Kimura Takuya started wearing one. Despite the JE rule of having "no official girlfriend", Kimura Takuya was always open about his relationship with his ex-girlfriend, Kaorin. In 2000, when he married Shizuka Kudo, he became the one and only JE to ever get married.

-His use of a butterfly knife in "Gift"(1997) prompted a spate of copycat attacks by disaffected teenagers. The series was forbidden to broadcast and forced to prune down before it got the green light. At the beginning of 1998, it caused several victims, one of whom was a school teacher stabbed to death. The adolescent murderer admitted imitating Takuya's behavior in "Gift". The media blamed him for this butterfly knife hysteria. The series was forbidden to rebroadcast forever, and videos of the series disappeared from shop shelves. (1997-1998)

-"Love Generation"(1997) went down in Japanese TV history as the most-watched series among the TV shows produced by non-national broadcasters (excepting Japan's sole public broadcaster NHK).
Changed the history of human beauty with his advertising campaign for TBC, a women's beauty clinic. At that time there were no beauty salons for man in Japan. After the launch of the campaign, the sudden mega increase of inquiries from men led TBC to conceive and open Japan's first beauty clinic for men. It was a big success, and others soon followed. (1997)

-Parapara, is a dance which has existed since 1970s in Japan but did not achieve popularity until Takuya started performing it on televsion. The sensation spread across Japan and Asia afterwards. (1998-1999)

-Nearly half of the population of Japan watched the last episode of "Beautiful Life" in which Takuya played a hairdresser who met a girl in a wheelchair. The show shattered the previous most-watched TV series record held by "Love Generation"(1997) of 30.8% with a viewership rating of 32.8%. Takuya, as well as the show, swept all the awards that year. (2000)

-Continues to break records held by himself. In 2001, "Hero" marked a viewership rating of 34.3%, setting a new most-watched TV series record. In addition, he also made Japanese TV drama history, when all episodes of "Hero" received over 30% of viewership, even a "Hero Special" which was on broadcast five years later recorded viewer ratings surpassing the 30 percent mark. In imitation of Takuya's role, a rule-breaking prosecutor, law graduates changed their minds about their careers. Being a prosecutor became the hottest job, thereby beating the previous occupation of becoming a lawyer. (2001)

-"Chuushingura 1/47", a 2.5 hour special period drama was the most watched TV drama of the holiday season. (Dec. 28, 2001)

-"Good Luck!!" in which he starred as a pilot topped 2003's TV view ratings. When it was on broadcast, the airlines got tons of job applications. (2003)

-"Kai-Ho-Ku", a collection of the his running "talk" column in Myojo magazine, became a national best seller with 200 000 copies sold in two weeks and more than 500 000 copies in two months. (Apr. 25, 2003)

-Starred as an ice hockey player named "Halu" in "Pride". The unpopular ice hockey sport in Japan then received a huge upsurge in popularity thereafter. The ice hockey audience increased by over 300 percent. A large number of parents sent their children to ice hockey schools. JIHF (Japan Ice Hockey Federation) sent a flag with Takuya's role's name and his squad number to the producer of the series, plus a letter of thanks conveying its appreciation to the cast and crew for popularizing this sport. JIHF named the Japan-Russia Friendship Tournament "Pride Cup" afterwards. (2004)

-"2046" was nominated for the competition section of 57th Cannes Film Festival. In an interview, when he was asked about the impression of Cannes, he replied that Cannes was similar to Atami. The statement made Atami, the little city in Japan, a hot scenic spot. The mayor of Atami subsequently expressed his appreciation in public through the media. (May 2004)

-Dubbed in Miyazaki Hayao's "Hauru no Ugoku Shiro" (Howl's Moving Castle) for the role of Hauru (Howl), receiving high praise from critics and the public. "Howl is the most beautiful male in Miyazaki's animation world as well as Takuya Kimura who represents today's Japanese masculine beauty","His Dubbing is perfect!" Producer Suzuki said. Miyazaki is known to be very exacting towards the voice over cast, and it took his actresses who did the heroines' voices several days even a week to do it to his satisfaction, but Takuya was only asked to do whatever he wanted as he matched the character. He finished his dubbing in three and a half hours. Miyazaki was completely satisfied with his performance and thought he was just Howl. (2004)

-Played a blind bushi in "Bushi no Ichibun" (Love and Honor), the third and last film in Yamada Yoji's bushi trilogy. The role earned him several nominations from the most prestigious film awards in Japan, Japanese Academy Awards, Cinema Junpo Awards and Blue Ribbon Awards. Takuya's agency declined his nominations for him, but Tokyo Sports Film Awards, the jury headed by Kitano Takeshi, still crowned him Best Actor as well as Cinema Junpo which selected him as the second Best Actor of the year. Period drama films are not popular in Japan, but "Bushi no Ichibun" became the biggest hit of Yamada's four-decade career with 40.3 billion JPY at the box-office. It was also the biggest box-office earner at Shochiku's history. (2006)

-Took the lead in an adaptation of Yamasaki Toyoko's classic novel "Karei-naru Ichizoku" (The Grand Pride) which depicts the conflicts within the Manpyo family amidst the tumultuous reorganization of the financial industry of the late 1960s. Receiving high praise for his outstanding performance as Teppei, a director of a steel firm and the eldest son of the Manpyo family, Takuya won Best Actor at the second Seoul Drama Awards among 130 submissions from 32 countries. Japanese Drama Academy Awards also crowned him Best Actor - for the 7th time, an unprecedented record. In addition, Takuya was also highly praised by Yamasaki Toyoko herself who expressed her appreciation for his excellent portrayal and called him "Kimura Teppei". (2007) ▲

Takuya's over-achieving records speak for themselves and put him in a class of his own, which no one would even get close to, let alone surpass. Had read in his bio that it was due to his conservative father's strict upbringing that had moulded his character, thus making him what he is today.

Takuya is just so smart and talented that he excels in everything that he puts his mind to. He is an awesome individual who simply puts everyone in the shade. There shall and can only be one Kimura Takuya. Ever.

You can tell I am quite the fan-girl hehe. Who else if not Kimura Takuya, ne?

Lastly, here's to more Takuya superhuman feats in an already amazing career!
