Jang Hyuk up for new drama Poseidon

After dropping out of melo-fantasy drama Secret Garden (to be replaced by Hyun Bin, backstory here), Jang Hyuk is close to picking his next project: upcoming action-adventure drama Poseidon.

Think god of the sea, not Hollywood action film about sinking ships.

The drama, penned by screenwriter Jo Kyu-won (IRIS) and directed by PD Yoo Chul-yong (All In, H.I.T., Swallow the Sun), is about the Coast Guard. Er, I’m not sure if Coast Guard is right, since it’s not military, but more like ocean police. If there’s a better way to officially classify “cops on boats,” then that’d be them.

The lead role was originally slated for Kang Ji-hwan, but his ongoing legal battle (over contracts) involved the production company for the drama, so they turned their eyes toward newly available Jang Hyuk for the lead. He’s currently reading the script, and looking upon the project favorably. If he goes with this drama (which I personally think is a better fit for him), it’ll be his first role in a year since Chuno.

Poseidon is aiming for broadcast early next year.

Kim Kang-woo cast as lead in Poseidon

This sure got my attention: Kim Kang-woo has been cast to lead the upcoming drama Poseidon, which is set in the world of the Korean Coast Guard. It’ll deal with the officers who execute rescues at sea, handle threats of terrorism, and are assigned to special missions, taking its name from the Poseidon Team, a special forces unit of the Marines.

Kim Kang-woo plays Oh Eun-chul, a character who graduates at the top of his class in the maritime police department and is appointed to the elite Poseidon counterterrorism team. He’ll go up against a rival and colleague in both work and love (naturally!). A previous role had Kim working extensively at sea (the movie Marine Boy, which dealt with drug smuggling via ocean runners), and he said of this role, “I remember suffering a lot when filming that movie at sea. I never thought I’d do a drama with an ocean theme, but because of the character’s appeal and the subject of the country’s top maritime police officers, I decided I wanted to give it a try.”

This drama had been rumored to star Jang Hyuk (after leaving Secret Garden, which thereafter cast Hyun Bin), but I guess he’s out (unless he takes the role of the rival, though I’m going to guess not). I like Jang Hyuk, but to be honest I’m much more interested now, because I’ve been itching to see Kim Kang-woo take on another drama. I know I sound like a broken record, but Story of a Man rocked my world, and Kim was fantastic in it.

While I’m still a little iffy on the premise (I’m recalling 2007′s airport/spy/action drama Air City — ugh), Poseidon will be written and directed by two men who have a bit of experience in the action-thriller genre: Yoo Chul-yong was the PD of 2009′s slick Swallow the Sun, 2007′s police drama HIT, and 2003′s All In. Writer Jo Kyu-won worked on last year’s IRIS.

Kim Kang Woo, Eric Moon & U-Know Yunho Team Up as Coast Guards

The upcoming blockbuster Korean drama ‘Poseidon’ has revealed its confirmed cast; they are Kim Kang Woo (Story of a Man), Eric Moon (Strongest Chil Woo), and DBSK’s Yunho.

Initially, Korean actor Jang Hyuk and DBSK’s Jaejoong were buzzed to closely pick the project, but I don’t hear any following news about it, instead the drama has recently released the pictures when 3 actors -Kim, Eric, and Yunho- take Coast Guard training. (Is it confimation that Jang Hyuk and Jaejoong cancelled their appearance? I don’t know!)

The drama directed by PD Yoo Chul Yong (All In and Swallow the Sun) and penned by Jo Kyu Won (IRIS), centers around the Coast Guard team, who bravelly takes challanges and risks to save lives while they also have to deal with each of their own pains. There is no more plots details, but if the writer of ‘IRIS’ is the one who writes the script, we can expect some intrigue, explosions, and guns.

‘Poseidon’ is aiming to release early of next year.

Kim Ok Bin is returning to acting in a drama after 4 years.

For the drama, "Poseidon" scheduled to be broadcasted in 2011, Kim Ok Bin has been casted as the main leading actress. She joins Eric, Kim Kang Woo and Yun Ho who had already been casted to the drama.

"Poseidon" is will be a story of rescue operations of a special team in the marine police department. PD Yoo Chul Yong whose previous work was the drama "All In" is joined by Cho Ku Yeon who was the co-writer for the script for the drama "Iris".

Kim Ok Bin's character Lee Soo Eun in "Poseidon" is the woman commander of the special team in the maritime police department. Her last drama was in 2006's Over the Rainbow and has since worked in film including Thirst (Bat) and Actresses.

Eric's character who meets Kim Ok Bin's character feels she would not be a good team member. In the drama, Kim Kang Woo and Eric are leaders of a speical team. Hence, the they form the triangle relationship among them.

Kim Ok Bin, Eric and Kim Kang Woo is scheduled to start shooting beginning of November. Recently, pictures of Kim Kang Woo and Yun Ho receiving training with the Incheon Coast Guards posted on the Coast Guard website created quite a stir.

Eric on for Poseidon, Kim Ok-bin still in consideration

Looks like the news is finally confirmed: Eric is on for action drama Poseidon, which is set in the world of the maritime police and has already cast Kim Kang-woo as a lead. This news has been floating around for a few weeks, but only as unconfirmed rumor, as with a few other names like idol star U-Know Yunho. (Yunho’s casting is still undecided.)

But Eric, the Shinhwa rapper turned actor who just completed his military obligation, told the press as he was discharged on October 30 (pictured above) that he will be acting in Poseidon. He has been serving out his mandatory army duty since October of 2008, and had been fielding offers for a comeback project in the months leading up to his discharge.

Eric added that he’d like to show a masculine appeal similar to Jang Hyuk in Chuno (and, coincidentally, Jang Hyuk was another name who was rumored to be in contention for this series).

Meanwhile, Kim Ok-bin is still said to be considering the role; her rep stated this past week that nothing has been decided yet, but that the announcement would come soon. While she gained entree to the entertainment industry more for her looks than anything (she was one of the earliest examples of an uljjang who made the successful leap to an acting career, along with Gu Hye-sun and Nam Sang-mi), she has really kicked it up, acting- and career-wise, in recent years. In particular, she was praised for her role in Park Chan-wook’s vampire thriller Thirst, which won a jury prize at Cannes in 2009.

Poseidon is set for 20 episodes, and is aiming to broadcast in the first half of next year.
