Kan to announce his policy platform next week
Prime Minister Naoto Kan is expected to announce his policy platform next Monday as he tries to rally support for a party leadership election in September. Supporters of party heavyweight Ichiro Ozawa will ask him to mount a rival bid. Official campaigning starts on September 1st.
On Monday, Kan met newly-elected party lawmakers. He told them he wants to stay on as party leader for the next 3 years.
Kan said he plans to establish strong party unity. He promised to seek help from former party secretary general Ozawa whenever necessary, describing him as a capable politician.
A group of Ozawa supporters says it wants to formally ask Ozawa to run against Kan as early as Thursday.
Ozawa is expected to decide whether to run by soliciting opinions from party groups, including those made up of former members of the Social Democratic Party and the disbanded Democratic Socialist Party.
