The Japanese lyrics are already in the videos, so I doubt CR needs permission from the Japanese (c) holders to put up the English lyrics. If they have to get permission then it would be from the English (c) holders and/or the (c) holder of the song (but like my first sentence said - it's already in there in Japanese). |

The person who wrote the song has copyright on the words, the person who composed the tune has copyright on the music and the group who performs the song has copyright on the performance. Often, the production studios only obtain the right to reproduce the performance. The the negotiation is a three-way thing, between the songwriter, the studio, and Crunchyroll. 3-way negotiations are always harder. Sometimes the studio hires the creation of the song, and then its only a negotiation with the studio whether they will allow it, which makes it easier to get the permission. I don't know for a fact, but my guess is that is why some shows, like Sasameki Koto, have their songs subtitled. |

Remember that CR does not do the subtitling itself, so they are not getting permission from the studios to do it, they are persuading the studios to get it done. And derivative works always require their own permission. Hopefully that will start to get included in the standard contract when the studio commissions or acquires the rights to a song. |

olandril wrote: From what I've heard the reason the song lyrics have to be approved is because of copyright law. The translated lyrics have to be personally approved by the lyrics owner, which is normally the lyrics writer. Apparently it normally takes 8+ weeks to get a response from the lyrics owner, and sometimes that response can be 'no'. If what you are saying is right the fansubs are actually very illegal because they are breaking copyright laws. I am glad that crunchyroll asked permission to sub the opening songs. I love how crunchyroll is doing everything legally and professionally. Like I said on my website. By keeping it legal more places will be able to get more anime and more video games and everything else that comes from japan. |
