I was at ACen 2006 - 2010, and enjoyed each year. Paying about $90/night for a nearby hotel during 2010 seemed expensive at the time. That said, while I will be at ACen 2011, I'm not paying $140 or more for a nearby hotel (unless I find someone willing to share the cost).

Things I've liked about Anime Central over the last few years:

* Plenty of events. There's never a dull moment.
* Balance. There's huge displays and a lot of commercialism in the dealers room... but in the artist alley and relatively small panels, it's pretty calm. Likewise, events range from huge to low-key.
* There is some food nearby. The Expoteria is one option, and for those who can't afford posh hotel restaurants, there's usually some decent food for sale in the convention center and the Hyatt lobby. (Other restaurants are a fairly long walk or a very short drive away.)
* I always go home with plenty of pictures, memories, and memorabilia... though not much money.

Things I don't like so much (many subjective, or unavoidable):
* I feel like I'm a few years older than the average anime congoer. It's tough to find other fans over 25 who are not just congoers' parents.
* ACen can be overwhelming. I have to pace myself to avoid getting tired too soon.
* While ACen is small compared to some other fan conventions, there's plenty of intense crowds. I feel sympathy for anyone who needs a walking assistance device to get around, or anyone with a stroller. They have it rough.
* Also, there's long lines for all large events. For example, to get into Anime Hell, it's necessary to wait at least an hour.
* After all the planning and anticipation, there's post-con depression...

About three months left until ACen. It's something to look forward to... but at the same time, it's such a short event. So that's why I'm planning how to get there, how to pace myself, how to avoid spending too much, etc.

Anime Central will happen during May 20-22 2011 in Rosemont, Illinois -- a suburb not far from Chicago's O'Hare Airport.

EmperorPaine, if you live in Las Vegas, and you don't plan to be Chicago in May 2011, then you may do well to search for a convention that's relevant to your interests near where you live. The options in Vegas may be limited, but you can probably find quite a few options in southern California. If you're trying to research cons, then I recommend asking on forums such as the animecons.com forum.
