according to Mangareader this is popular, but not to me.... Pandora Hearts by Mochizuki Jun (same author of Crimson Shell for those who like that).

Plot synopsys: Oz Vessalius is celebrating his coming-of-age ceremony when he is cast into a dark dimension of no escape, the Abyss. there Oz meets the chain, B-rabbit... Can B-rabbit help Oz escape?

OK i would write more but I don't want to spoil anything. that's basically what it says on the back of the first book.

it's my favorite series of all time, and i think more people should read and enjoy it!

Lucky Number 13 - The main guy tries going out with another guy who people say is cursed with bad luck, and it's just funny what happens to him. He gets hurt by the strangest things (in one chapter, he gets a nosebleed from a badminton birdy hitting his face), and the way people react to it makes it more fun. Poor guy though. XD

Sugar Dark - The main guy gets sentenced to death and is sent to this guy with no nose to make graves. But the things he sees are crazy.

Virgin Ripper - Main character is a shinigami whose scythe is shaped like a SPOON. Things happen, and she has to go try and get her commander back. Quite screwy but the characters are nice.

TAL - Webcomic. Really nice.

YAY!!! Nobody mentioned En Passant yet!!!

Verde, a powerful and secret organization that controls the world, has a new leader. The only thing that stands in its way is an unlikely character, Kujou Shin, the king of pessimists. He has no attachments to anything or anyone and feels no hesitation to dying. He is unwillingly dragged into a fight for the most powerful position in the world, the leader of Verde. What will his fate be?

Say I Love You - it's a really good shojo manga and it's recently gaining some popularity

The Bride of The Water God - if you focus a lot on art and detail then this is the perfect manga for you.

Bloody Kiss - a cute vampire story

Shinshi Doumei Cross - It's by Arina Tanemura. Enough said.

Orange Planet- A cute story about a girl, her childhood friend, and a teaching intern she begins to live with

Hiyokoi- again, another cute story about a shy and timid girl who's super short and petite who falls in love
with this tall, popular guy. Sounds odd but it's actually really good.

OMG YESSSSS! My fav! The action scenes are amazing, all the characters are eye candy, shirow miwa uses exaggerated perspective and exciting effects and does not abuse screen tone- highly recommended!

Not sure whether they are unheard of, but since they weren't mentioned in earlier posts I'll give them some recognition:

First up is Akumetsu by Yoshiaki Tabata, the plot follows a masked vigilante out to rid japan of evil with his "one man, one kill" method under the alias of Akumetsu which literally means destroyer of evil. This is perhaps my favorite finished manga of all time...how great is it? Well let's just say that if i ever get a tattoo it'll definitely be of the Akumetsu mask.

Does manhua count for this topic? Well...regardless I'll mention The Ravages of Time by Chan Mou. I got this from wikipedia: "It re-tells the events in the late Han Dynasty and Three Kingdoms period of Chinese history. The series is known for exercising a large degree of creativity in several aspects and people of the Three Kingdoms. While the milestone events were left relatively untouched (e.g. outcomes of major battles, death of certain characters), many finer details were changed and largely dramatized." Anyone familiar with the Three Kingdoms period should enjoy this similar yet different take on such an epic story.

I think if something has an anime based on it, it's popular...haha. Anyway, most of my faves are not hugely popular because I don't really read much that isn't bl/gl(though I did read kimi wa pet and kuragehime, but to me those are very popular?). Anyway, my most recently read new favorite is Ringo ni Hachimitsu by Hideyoshico and its sequel, Usotsuki wa Koi no Hajimari. It's just a pretty simple story about two people in love and I found it very sweet and much more real(in a normal, average kind of way rather some some story about people with severe mental issues)than most BL. It has very beautiful artwork, more in the way the mangaka chose to lay out the scenes and poses than the actual drawing skill(which is lovely in itself). I recommend it if you like yaoi, but dislike annoying yaoi stereotypes.

Otomari Honey is not *that* obscure, but it's far from famous. If you're not familiar with it, the series is an NSFW story of a couple in love. But he has a harem, and both of them have personality quirks. Currently at three volumes and still being written. Not much plot, mostly comedy.

well there are a few that have already been named that i really like so i will name one that i didnt see posted.

Penguin Revolution Plot from Wikipedia since i didnt feel like typing it all out

Yukari Fujimaru is the only daughter of a quite unreliable father, and she dreams of a more reliable future, as a public official. She has a gift: she can see the potential of a person in the form of wings on their back, and by chance she sees wings on the back of one of her schoolmates, Ryouko, who is actually Ryou, one of the male actors of the famous entertainment company PEACOCK, in disguise. When Yukari's father loses his work and flees, Ryou introduces her to PEACOCK as his manager, and a totally unexpected career starts for Yukari. Through a series of twists and turns, both Ryou and Yuka are forced to put their teamwork and trust to the test.

Aw, this made my day! I'm working on Dogs: Bullets and Carnage now, and the artwork really is sublime. So clean. The cast of characters and story are amazing too.

I've only read two by est em, Age Called Blue and Seduce Me After the Show, but I really like her style. The images of Theo as Carmen with the long train...I couldn't stop looking at them!

And I never know if what I read or watch is obscure because I'm never the most up-to-date person, but I like Kano Miyamoto's works. She's kind of like est em in presenting a moody, melancholy feel that's not as simply angsty as a lot of BL. Her covers are amazing. I would buy just for the covers even if the stories were crap...maybe. Thankfully, the stories are great.

Record of Fallen Vampire:

There is a legend that tells of how the world was almost destroyed thousands of years ago by the vampire queen after she unleashed her latent powers. Despite their efforts, the humans were unable to defeat her, and thus resorted to sealing her away until the time came that they would be powerful enough to destroy the seal and kill her. However, the humans are not the only ones after the seal. Having cast aside his kingdom and betraying his own race and the dhampirs (half-vampires), the vampire king is persistantly searching, even to this day, for where his queen has been sealed away so he may break the seal and free her before the humans do. Fearing that once the king and queen are reunited, they shall continue to destroy the world together, the humans and dhampirs hunt the king, using any method possible.
