Kan, Ozawa compete for undecided votes

A 2-week race for the leadership of Japan's Democratic Party began on Wednesday between Prime Minister Naoto Kan and his challenger, Ichiro Ozawa.

Supporters from both sides met separately to launch their campaigns, each drawing about 120 legislators from the party.

Both sides are now expected to seek the vote of about 170 other legislators who did not appear at either meeting.

Competition also begins for the support of rank-and-file party members and supporters, who make up a quarter of the voters in the September 14th leadership election.

Prime Minister Kan and Ozawa, a former party secretary general, spoke at a joint news conference after registering their candidacy on Wednesday.

Ozawa said that if elected he will challenge Japan's bureaucrats and fulfill the policy pledges made by the Democratic Party in last year's lower house election. He criticized Kan's Cabinet for ordering a 10-percent, across the board cut in next year's fiscal budgetary requests.

Kan said he wants to make the party clean and more open by shedding old-style money politics.

Ozawa has been criticized for what critics see as a dictatorial style. Opinion polls show that many people think he has failed to fully account for his role in a political funds scandal.

Both candidates also argued over the issue of relocating a US Marine base in Okinawa.
