yes they can.. avatar was created in america and it's a quality work
I like seeing that show. It's like a hybrid between western and eastern style. It's more well-rounded than it's "real" anime counterpart.

To be honest everytime i read manga or anime, there's always a voice in the back of my head that keeps wishing that the story is not so... err.. "japanese" and include references from other country's history and culture too.

So anyway yes, i think non-asian can become mangakas. I hope there will be lots of them. I'd strongly look forward to the creation of their work

Though all the best ones so far have been asian...you can tell stright away when it's done by a 'non-asian'.

Yea, it's all about the style and the storyline. Tokyopop is releasing tons of manga that aren't made by japanese or asian people. Dramacon is a good read and the art is decent, and it isn't even made by an asian.

it depends what you define a mangaka as... Manga=Comics and Anime=Cartoons if your looking at it technichally. Personally i would tend to think non-asian manga's would be classified as comics so it would be impossible for a non-oriental to become a mangaka.

This is like asking if a non-American can be a CGI film artist, a non-French can be a French Cuisine chef, etc. They might have some disadvantages of a Japanese individual living in Japan with the mindset and experiences of a Japanese person who might understand other Japanese person better. But a non-Japanese artist might be able to capture the same ideas, what the manga culture wants, or may have other major advantages over the Japanese manga artist.

I think it could completely happen. something being a manga or not really depends on things like what the art looks like and what the story and characters are like. not so much who made it.

..ok. possibly. with the 10% that they would like mangas in the first place
although there shouldn't be descrimination in art, do you really believe that others would like the manga s/he wrote?
