Don't shoot me if this may sound as a stupid question,or if this is asked before.I know how to use the search function but don't know how to put it

Anyways,here it goes.

I've been watching FullMetal Alchemist:Brotherhood untill episode 25 and We already all know this is quite the masterpiece, albeit somewhat harsh at times...

But my question is:If this anime is quite harsh and the story it tells is not about the birds and the bees, why do they still use humour in it?I mean,Elrics reaction when being "accused" of being small,Winry who goes berzerk when again an automail is damaged. Why do they use this kind of humour in an otherwise pretty dark and gloomy story? Is it sometimes not a bit misplaced?I mean in one episode you have Lt Hughes being buried, and his little daughter crying for him,or Nina and her dog when they became victims of their father's experiments. And in the same episode you are laughing your ass off for Elric,or when Armstrong is showing off his body?

Is there a reason for this kind of behaviour? And i'm pretty sure this isn't only in FMA but in other anime too?

It's to lighten the load a bit. Having a anime being depressing and harsh through the whole thing, turns a lot of people away from it. So, they (manga-ka's or directors or whoever) add the humor. *shrugs*

yeah not a very hardcore anime person i do like the anime i like so dont bite my head off

from what i have seen brotherhood is an abridged version of the first FMA while filling a few holes and expanding on the story a bit while keeping a similar feel to the original

correct me if im wrong but if one watches brotherhood before the original FMA they would be confused by some of the jumping around and the bits of story that are briefly explained in the beginning of each new section of story

Can't really say for FMA: Brotherhood as I only have seen the original

But as for why they can mix it up is that it is in their character to do so,
placing yourself in the characters place, you only know what your character knows and can have fun or joke( and such) until you know differently

Feeling such as love, compassion and empathy, a human side to the characters...
Compare "your side" against "their side", showing what "your side" is fighting for or/and against

And it is not only FMA this happens in

PS! Rather then getting your head taken off, you might get a list of anime that we can't let you live without seeing... might be the same thing though

If i, as a anime watcher, wanted nothing but dark and depressing i'd stick with watching the news, at least with a little humor it stops being so depressing that i wanna go emo and top myself

The bit of humor here and there in Brotherhood are also in the manga as well. But I agree with the 2nd poster, if it was dark all the time it wouldn't be that great of a story. To me, the humor is there to remind the watcher/reader that Ed and Al are human. If you don't find something funny in the small things you can lose your way.

@blusasuke: FMA and FMA:Brotherhood are about the same for the first few episodes. The original then goes off on its own direction and ends extremely different than Brotherhood. Brotherhood follows the manga from start to finish.

The humour dissapears towards the end. The show gets a lot more serious.

to change the mood..... so that it wud not be too depressing in the part of the viewers... and isn't it cuter that they have characters like that, Edward's reaction when being told small is cute and funny (for me).... that's the way of the director for showing the comedy parts.....
oh, and am happy that the ending of the FMAB is a happy ending unlike the original one..... the original one is really depressing.. D:

its there to ruin episodes...yah its supposed to make everything seem less harsh and dark, yet its not handled well and is over used

it would be way depressing to read but that way it has a balance of comedy and drama

(this is one of my faves)

Regardless of authors, they always tend to play the audience's emotion and stir it to a certain extent. This is what make a story more interesting.
