1st of all, Why would people look down upon an another person? Just because of what they do, or believe? I hate it when people think highly of themselves.

yeah. i believe this.

To bad most people are targeted for their actions.
Otaku act stupid in public, people are going to react to it.

Otaku are mindless freaks..

A Otaku stands for a person so obsessed with something, it can be counted as a sickness.

Their losers with no life..!

From what I know, the word "otaku" has a negative meaning attached to it. That is why I never label myself as "otaku." I believe being an anime enthusiast is different from being an otaku. An otaku is... never mind. Do your own research.

On topic, there are many people from my school who like anime. That includes me. Were pretty much given the normal treatment and people usually ask for our help when it comes to art-related things. And I haven't had any experience wherein I was discriminated because of my love for anime.

Otaku are treated in the west much like they are treated in Japan. With a lot of abuse and fear of their creepyness. Most people in Japan avoid Otaku because they have no redeeming qualities and are only obsessed with one thing so it makes it hard for them to make friends apart from other Otaku that share their obsession. Anyone else just gets creeped out and runs a mile.

In my school, otaku or whatever includes people that simply like some anime. People are generally nice although I suspect it is because I know a lot of open minded people. If I didn't know nice people I'm sure I'd notice others that act like mongrels towards people that like hobbies different than drinking or whatever.

In my old school, Otaku's were treated by most of the people like Gods.
My old school was a selective school, which in Australia, means that the majority of the people were Asian. Which also means that the majority of people really liked anime. And the people who had the most anime, who had the greatest knowledge and figurines, where treated with both fear and awe. But the people who didn't like anime that much just didn't care about them, but I guess it's far better than bullying. That's never occurred, in my knowledge.

How I am treated?

I'm cool, everyone likes talking about the latest episode of naruto and one piece.

I like Naruto. I get to make them listen my anime soundtracks!

The students in my school will just ignore the fact that a person likes anime/manga/video games/whatever. They just don't really care.

while otaku is mainly in a egative connotation, it can refer to an anime enthusiast or someone who loves manga/anime/games/doujinshi etc. Cause its not like all otaku are carazy/perverted/freaks and not as if we're Miyazaki Tsutomu. Plus there are different kinds of otaku. being a fujoshi even can fall under the category of otaku. so 'otaku' has a variety of meanings.

Anyways..... out of my friends (probably out of my entire school) im the most into stuff like anime and manga. Theres not very many (like 10 ) at my school who like anime/manga. We arent treated any differently, but thats probably because no one really knows what it is.

There's a load of people who watch anime and read manga. And what's really awesome is that our school library has manga in it!

No one knows what the word "otaku" means, they don't even know that such a word exists.
