I'm used to my "budget" having fewer zeros... For 25 grand I'd get myself mildly used Manual Golf TDI.

My dream car has been the s2000 AP2, I love the look of those machines, plus a natural aspirated 4 cylinder putting out 240hp is simply amazing . However the scion FR-S/ Subaru BRZ is beginning to catch my attention...(Initial D 2012 style ) I could care less about the lack of horsepower, that car looks like pure fun. Of course I'd by used tho to save some $$$$$

Don't forget to take into consideration insurance and maintenance. Many of the cars suggested have either high insurance or high maintenance cost, or both. (IE, an STI is going to kill you on insurance premiums)

For 25K, for a new car, I would look at a BRZ/FT-86 or a Mustang V6 with the manual transmission and the lower gear ratio for better acceleration (although these are having issues with the drive-shaft blowing up if you remove the 118mph speed limiter) Both of these are on the cheaper side to insure, and both of course have a warranty since they are new. You can also try and find a 2012 Camry SE V6, since the 2013s are out, if you find one you can probably talk them down on the price a lot. It is quick (0-60 in 5.8 seconds, 1/4 mile in 14.3 seconds @ 101mph) They also look a lot better IMO than the previous SEs (Which is what I have) For an AWD option, there is the WRX, but I have not checked to see what the insurance is like.

For a used car, I suggest finding a cheap GTI and then putting the extra money into a stage 1 upgrade. A cheap Miata and slap a turbo on it, and still have money left over. Mazdaspeed 3 (As others have suggested) but make sure to replace the engine mounts with stronger ones. (If you plan on driving it hard, the stock mounts can break) If you want more practically, and really cheap ownership cost, the Golf TDI that others have mentioned is a really good choice.

I would have recommended the new Focus ST as a new car under $25K, but Ford has been having a lot of reliability issues with their Ecoboost motors lately. I would wait until their Ecoboost engines have had a few more years to mature, as having your car catch on fire in never a good idea.

Tough to say. I'd probably look for a Corolla GT-S and fix it up to look freakin mint, fix my own Miata up, or maybe get a Hyundai Veloster. I know the Veloster isn't the best choice, but for some reason I just keep coming back to it.

I would have to say a used 2006 & up GMC Sierra1500 ext cab with 5.3L. I have owned a lot of vehicles and this is probably the one I've had the most fun with. It is fast, easy, affordable to up grade to your liking, and comes in el-cheap-o to Cadillac interior. It is the same motor platform as the Corvette and Camaro for speed parts. It has a great after market, 2wd can go low and fast, 4x4 can get jacked up for off road. The best thing though, you buy something, you can almost always take it home with you.

I rescind my previous post...

Because I want a 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek with a 5-speed manual!

8.7 inches of ground clearance, so soft off-roading is an option (it has more ground clearance than Jeep's unibody offerings!)
the new Subaru FB20 engine (DOHC + timing chain FTW, way better than the old archaic SOHC timing belt)
suspension tuned for fun on or off the road
compact so urban maneuvering isn't compromised
essentially an upgraded, toughened-up Impreza hatch

DO WANT!

My brother has an 08 Silverado crew-cab 4X4 with the nearly useless super short box that I've used a couple of times to haul my racer. His has the 5.3 and it hauls ass! For a 1/2 ton it's an awesome tow rig. You can't go wrong with anything LS powered. With the aftermarket support it enjoys, it has no equal.

The new Mazda 6! Although I really like the 2, and Toyota Yaris. I tend to like small cars that you can just chuck around.
