Sung Yu Ri and Jung Gyu Woon likely will lead ‘Maids’

It’s kind of a little bit a bummer to find out that Micky Yoochun and Yoon Eun He were not the star of upcoming KBS2 drama Maids.
But we’re pretty happy with the cast, it’s Sung Yu Ri and Jung Gyu Woon who will likely take the main lead role.

If Sung Yu Ri’s representative already confirmed the news, Jung Gyu Won’s rep told that it’s still in the talk and not 100% final.
It’ll be a good comeback role for 30-year-old Sung Yu Ri after 2009 Swallow the Sun. She did a great job in 2008 Hong Gil Dong and we believe she’ll do well for Maids too.

For the male lead role, Jung Gyu Woon is a safe bet, it’s a big lead role again for him.
He seems to never takes a rest. Just after finished Dr. Champ, he landed for second lead role in currently airing drama Sign.
And with Sign makes finale this week, Jung Gyu Woon soon will resume shooting for Maids which is scheduled for early May debut – if he takes this role.
We love Jung Gyu Woon’s laid back and coy personality in Sign and definitely looking forward to see him again in Maids.

Romantic comedy Maids tells a questionable identity of maids in a chaebol family. Must be funny.

Maids will be a big challenge for Sung Yu Ri

Yes, many are in doubt whether the 30-year-old pretty girl Sung Yu Ri will prevail as the tough girl Noh Soon Geum in upcoming KBS2 drama tentatively titled Maids. Noh Soon Geum in Maids is described as a tough and fearless maid.

The former vocalist of Kpop group FinKL already transformed into actress through several dramas. But, it’s not an easy path as in the beginning of her acting journey, she had poor reputation of her acting skill. Her cute and mellow image was so strong and she’s considered failed to blend into some of her character. Such as her latest drama Swallow The Sun where she played a strong character but her weak girl, pure and pitiful image was still there.

She did a quite good job in Hong Gil Dong, tough. But that’s not enough to totally erased her mellow image.

So, many Korean netizen are worrying – but some with positive mind, they commented about upcoming Yu Ri’s role :
‘She has stereo-type performance, now we can find a new attractiveness from her’
”This is big chance for Sung Yu Ri’
‘ I worry this is too much for her, image switching is not good ‘
‘I worry she leave another poor reputation about her performing skill’

And what’s Sung Yu Ri opinion abut her new role ? She said :
I enjoy new role in Maids, which is a different character than I used to perform. As I took long hiatus to consider new work carefully, I will compensate with a good performance.

She’s confident. Good then.

Maids has an interesting story, written by Pasta’s writer and with brilliant acting from Sung Yu Ri, this drama should be a hit, so this is really a big chance for Yu Ri. Will she make it? We’ll see when Maids debut May 11.

I think I'll pass on this drama.

Although I like the actors, the plot itself doesn't sound that exciting or original. (Successful story of a Bright Girl, anyone?)

Also, I heard the writer's previous project (Pasta) was a borefest. And I don't want to watch another boring rom-com. (i.e. Mary Stayed Out All Night and My Princess)

Maids deliberates over name change

With its cast in place — Sung Yuri, Jung Kyeo-woon, Kim Min-joon, and Min Hyo-rin — and its May premiere set, KBS’s rom-com series Maids held its first script rehearsals this week. But one lingering issue remains unresolved: the title, with which producers are wrestling after receiving complaints.

The problem? One national organization of housekeeping workers has argued that the title is belittling to their work, and announced their intention to campaign for a change. Starting in 2004, the organization made the formal choice to change the language used for their line of work, opting for words like 파출부 (housekeeper) and 가사도우미 (household assistant) rather than the word the drama uses, 식모. You can consider it a matter of cultural awareness and/or political correctness, akin to how English speakers may cringe to hear someone still using “stewardess” rather than “flight attendant.” A rep from the organization argued that the drama shouldn’t resurrect an outdated word that has been deemed dissatisfactory by society.

One source with the drama’s promotional department admitted, “We guessed from the outset that the title might attract criticism, so a month ago we began preparing to change it. There are about 20 possibilities that are being considered.”

The new candidates include Elegant World, Grand Women, Secret of 1st Street (1st Street being the locus of the chaebol families serviced by the maids), The Ladies’ Teatime, House Queen, and Suspicious Women.

The drama is expected to make its final decision on the title this week. The drama soon-to-be-formerly-titled-Maids premieres on May 11.

Maids changes its name to…

Romance Town?

Last week, the drama formerly known as Maids encountered some opposition regarding its name, as it uses a word for “maids” [식모] that has in recent years been abandoned for more favorable, politically correct terminology. The production was aware of the possibility that the title might rub some people the wrong way, and got to work thinking up replacements.

The complaint came from a national organization of domestic workers, who posted messages of protest to KBS and began petitioning for the name change. They argued that they’ve spent long years working to raise awareness and alter the terms used to describe their profession, and feel that the drama’s usage of the word would undermine their efforts in one fell swoop.

The production bandied around approximately 20 potential replacement titles (including some awkward selections like Elegant World and The Ladies’ Tea Time). Their final decision came down to Romance Town and Suspicious 1st Street… to which I say, they picked wrong. The other one is FAR more interesting. (“Suspicious” is a word that has been used in all the press materials to describe the housemaids working in the chaebol homes. It doesn’t mean, necessarily, that the maids are criminals or dishonest types, but that they’re offbeat, unusual.)

Romance Town, on the other hand, sounds like a kitchsy amusement park gone bad, or the cheesy cousin to Funky Town, or maybe an ironic strip club. But does it sound like a cute trendy drama about plucky domestic help and the snooty chaebol men they work for? Not even a little.

The drama stars Sung Yuri (Swallow the Sun) and Min Hyo-rin (Triple) as maids, and Jung Kyeo-woon (Dr. Champ) and Kim Min-joon (Friend, Our Legend) as their chaebol employers, respectively. It premieres on May 11.

I'm glad I gave this drama a shot. The first three episodes turned out to be a pleasant surprise. (haven't watched episode 4 yet)

Out of all the dramas that premiered this month (Lie to me, Greatest Love, etc) I'm enjoying this one the most. Like Pasta, it has that quirky slice of life feel to it. With all the cliche ridden OTT rom-coms out right now, I find the atmosphere in this drama very refreshing.
