KDrama~2011] City Hunter
|
Details * Title: 시티헌터 / City Hunter * Genre: Romance * Episodes: 20 * Broadcast network: SBS * Broadcast period: 2011-May-25 to 2011-Jul-?? * Air time: Wednesday & Thursday 21:55 Plot ‘City Hunter’ is an original script based on the world-famous novel by Japan’s Tsukasa Hojo. Since it became public that Korea would be the first remake of this story into a drama, ‘City Hunter’ has been receiving worldwide attention. ‘City Hunter’ has switched the setting from Tokyo 1980 to Seoul 2011, and according to the original story structure, the protagonist becomes a city hunter and his character develops while resolving gratifying cases. Lee Yoon Sung (Lee Min Ho) works at the Blue House’s National Communication Network Team and received his Ph.D at M.I.T. Kim Na Na (Park Min Young), a former judo athlete who works as a bodyguard for the President’s residence, the Blue House. Kim Na Na will eventually be involved in a love triangle with Lee Yoon Sung and prosecutor Lee Joon Hyuk (Kim Young Joo). The drama also marks Goo Ha Ra’s acting debut and she will play the role of the President’s daughter, Choi Da Hye. Cast Lee Min Ho as Lee Yoon Sung Park Min Young as Kim Na Na Lee Joon Hyuk as Kim Young Joo Hwang Sun Hee as Jin Soo Hee Goo Ha Ra as Choi Da Hye Extended Cast Kim Sang Joong as Lee Jin Pyo Chun Ho Jin as Choi Eung Chan Kim Sang Ho as Bae Shik Joong Park Sang Min as Park Moo Yul Kim Mi Sook as Lee Kyung Hee Lee Seung Hyung as Song Young Duk Yang Jin Sung (양진성) as Shin Eun Ah Lee Kwang Soo as Go Ki Joon Kim Byung Choon as Jang Woo Hyun Shin Young Jin (신영진) as Kim Mi Ok Lee Hyo Jung as Lee Kyung Wan Choi Jung Woo as Chun Jae Man Choi Il Hwa as Kim Jong Shik Choi Sang Hoon as Seo Yong Hak http://wiki.d-addicts.com/City_Hunter ** Spoiler Alert!!! click to hide or show** Did Rain steal Lee Min-ho’s thunder? It was big news when Lee Min-ho was cast as a womanizing PI in the kdrama adaptation of the famous manga and anime series City Hunter, which was hugely popular in the 1980s. So what has the production team suddenly worried? Apparently, it’s the similarity of City Hunter’s distinctive Ryo Saeba character to Rain‘s lead character in currently airing drama Runaway Plan B, as well as the storylines of the two projects. When Runaway premiered, a lot of viewers noted the familiarity of Rain’s Ji-woo to the well-known City Hunter hero, with his detective occupation, incorrigible flirting with pretty women, and chic urban style. The similarity itself isn’t the only issue, though; what makes things stickier is that Runaway, which got off to such a strong ratings start, has nearly halved its audience at the midway point. If it had continued to be a hit, perhaps there’d be less worry — just as one vampire/zombie hit is sure to spawn dozens of imitators — but with the first one faring poorly, there’s concern that the second would meet a similar fate. There have even been rumors that the production is reconsidering its direction with City Hunter, and is waiting things out before making a final decision. Currently, the series is being planned for an early 2011 broadcast on SBS. It’s an interesting dilemma. On one hand, there are tons of dramas out there with similar topics that get produced all the time, and sometimes it’s just a matter of certain trends emerging at once. For a while we had a spate of legal and medical dramas, which have since faded. Then you had 2009 as the year of the (failed) sports drama, focusing on everything from boxing to soccer to golf to figure skating. Heck, there were even two versions of Iljimae. On the other hand, you can see where there is concern that the first drama will steal the thunder from all those that follow — remember Cinderella Man‘s lawsuit with Fashion King, or Style versus Magazine Allo? And even though MBC’s Return of Iljimae was vastly superior to SBS’s Iljimae in writing, directing, and acting, SBS purposely hurried their production in order to scoop MBC, aired first, and brought in the bigger ratings. (They also had the bigger star — Lee Jun-ki — which certainly helped.) So, you can see the reason for concern. Lee Min-ho was a great “get” for this role despite his youth (at 23, he really is too young to play Ryo, imo), but now there’s a likelihood that everything he does would be compared to Rain’s performance — either he’d be called a copycat, or fall short of the comparison. Still, Lee is taking an optimistic line, and on October 26 a rep from his management stated, “The character Kang Jin that Lee Min-ho will be playing is different from the original character in a number of aspects, and the script has not yet come out. I think you’ll find that Kang Jin is a fresher and more three-dimensional character than expected. These days, Lee Min-ho is busy preparing to express that character. Please don’t worry and look forward to Lee’s Kang Jin.” As for me? I’ll be watching both! Via Hankook Ilbo, TV Report http://www.dramabeans.com/2010/10/did-rain-steal-lee-min-hos-thunder/ ![]() WHAT?! I won’t believe this until it’s on the air, but Lee Min-ho has reportedly been selected to headline a Korean drama adaptation of City Hunter, the popular 1980s manga and anime about a womanizing detective. The lead character is Saeba Ryo, who runs the City Hunter business with his partner, Kaori Makimura, and is a bit of a perv. (He almost exclusively takes cases from pretty women.) He also fights crime with the help of his trusty partner (some might call her his Girl Friday [Swoon. -GF]), who secretly loves him. I wrote about City Hunter back in 2008 when a Korean-Japanese production was being planned starring Jung Woo-sung. I’m going to guess that fell through. This version is slated for SBS and sounds like it might actually make it. City Hunter was created by Hojo Tsukasa in 1985. There have been a few live-action adaptations attempted in the past, but none seemed to be that successful. According to one rep from the production company, the series has received numerous requests for drama adaptations, but those hadn’t come into fruition because they didn’t satisfy the creator’s requests. However, Hojo Tsuaka was reportedly satisfied with Lee Min-ho as the lead — no doubt thanks to his star-making role in last year’s uber-hit Boys Before Flowers. The original was set against 1980s Tokyo; this version will take place in 2011 in Seoul. The Ryo character has been renamed “Kang Jin.” OMFG. I may love this, or love to hate it. Either way, love. ![]() Lee Min-ho’s female co-star, the Kaori character, has yet to be cast and remains a topic of fan speculation. She’s described as “more attractive than pretty,” which is a way of saying that the role will be in need of a strong, charismatic actress. City Hunter plans to begin shooting in December, and is aiming for a broadcast in the first half of 2011. http://www.dramabeans.com/2010/11/fanmade-city-hunter-posters-are-lookin-good/ |

It’s official, Lee Min Ho City Hunter arrives in May 2011
The long awaited playboy detective drama City Hunter, starred by heartthrob Lee Min Ho will debut on May 25, 2011 as Wed-Thursday SBS drama. It’s still long away though, almost a half year, but a confirmed date is always a good news. It’s also a benefit for City Hunter which previously compared to Rain’s funny detective drama Fugitive : Plan B to debut in the middle of 2011. Because at that time , the memory and hype of Fugitive probably already gone and City Hunter can make its own fresh start. We can’t wait to see Min Ho as clever , handsome and charismatic detective with all his high technology solves city crimes ! Hwaiting Min Ho ! |

“City Hunter” has put together the ‘2011 Super Hot Dream Team'
A dream team has come together for SBS’s new Wednesday/Thursday drama, “City Hunter“. Screenwriter Hwang Eun Kyung, who wrote the script for the recent SBS drama, “Daemul“, will be joining “City Hunter”, which is scheduled to broadcast its first episode on May 25th. Screenwriter Hwang wrote up to the 6th episode of “Daemul”, leading to the early increase in viewer ratings. She has received much love from the public for her medical drama, “New Heart“, and her political drama, “Daemul”. However, she was disappointed with having to leave in the middle of “Daemul”, and she is determined to express herself freely and show the public her full writing skills. ‘City Hunter’ is an original script based on the world-famous novel by Japan’s Tsukasa Hojo. Since it became public that Korea would be the first remake of this story into a drama, ‘City Hunter’ has been receiving worldwide attention. Producer Jin Hyuk from ‘Brilliant Legacy‘ and ‘Prosecutor Princess‘, actor Lee Minho, and writer Hwang have come together to create what has become known as the “2011 Super Hot Dream Team”. The publishing side of ‘City Hunter‘ confidently stated, “We have a lot of expectations for writer Hwang Eun Kyung, who has shown her talent through several previous projects. We believe that synergy will be demonstrated through the collaboration of producer Jin Hyuk, actor Lee Minho, and writer Hwang.” ‘City Hunter’ has switched the setting from Tokyo 1980 to Seoul 2011, and according to the original story structure, the protagonist becomes a city hunter and his character develops while resolving gratifying cases.
