DPJ lawmakers to vote to choose new leader

Lawmakers of the ruling Democratic Party of Japan are set to vote for a new party president on Tuesday.

Prime Minister and DPJ incumbent Naoto Kan and former party secretary general Ichiro Ozawa have spent 2 weeks competing for a majority share of 1,222 points, based on ballots cast by various categories of voter.

The party's 411 Diet legislators contribute 822 points with each vote worth 2 points. They will begin voting on Tuesday afternoon after the 2 contenders deliver their final speeches at an extraordinary party convention.

Mail ballots cast by the DPJ's local assembly members, registered members and supporters will be counted at a hotel in Tokyo at around same time.

About 2,400 DPJ local assembly members have votes worth 100 points. Other members and supporters have 300 points.

The results of their voting will also be announced at the convention.

Kan is determined to win the most votes across all groups, while Ozawa is focusing on support among lawmakers.

The 2 contenders are expected to fight for lawmakers' votes until the last minute.
