there are many things that I don't understand how it got turned into a huge social taboo, and incest is one of them. if you trace humanity back far enough, you can always find a common lineage. incest was how humanity began. throughout history, noble families have used incest as a way to keep their bloodline "pure". small tribes and villages of the past, before mass transit was a reality, would often have to rely upon incest in order not to die out. now it's somehow this huge evil taboo imposed upon us by the unknown morality police.

Hate the haters, as long as it's true love I don't think it should matter whether their related. that may be just my opinion though

It kind of bothers me. I actually don't have that much of a problem with incest(although the fact that I was an only child may have something to do with that), what bothers me more is that the topic is almost never seriously dealt with. It always turns out that "Oh, were really not related, that makes it OK", which comes across as more of a cop-out than anything. For those wondering why the taboo exists, it's genetic. Look up the Westermarck effect on Wikipedia.

There are more offensive genres of manga then incest if you don't know what they are then would say your lucky ... some things can't be un-seen. Out of all the genres i have read would say incest is the most vanilla so doesn't bother me a bit.

This is why you should read and watch Koi Kaze. It is dead serious and doesn't "cop out".

In real life I find incest to be pretty out there, hence why it's considered a taboo. But for some reason I don't mind it too much in the realm of manga or anime. Maybe because it's easy enough to separate life and manga. As long as it's a good story, I'll read it.

When I choose a manga to read, all I care about is a good story. As long as I have a real good story to read, I won't mind anything else. But I find very weird how we need to impose our judgments in everything. Incest is one of those things that I don't think I'm able to judge. The fact that I'm an only child might have something to do with that, but anyway, who am I to judge? What do I know?

Westermarck imprinting http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imprinting_(psychology)#Westermarck_and_Freud also know as the Westermarck effect http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westermarck_effect keeps incest from happing or at least is the believed cause of the incest taboo. It also keeps childhood friends from becoming lovers.

Let me explain a little, Westermarck imprinting (named after Edward Westermarck) is a reverse sexual imprinting of people who live in close domestic proximity for approximately the first six years of life. In a case study of 3,000 marriages only fourteen of them were of the same peer group when growing up and of the fourteen none of them had met before the age of six. This is the biggest piece of evidence for Westermarck imprinting. Westermarck believed that this imprinting was the cause of the incest taboo and is an evolutionary trait that prevents genetic diseases that are caused by inbreeding. Most other sociologists believe that the incest taboo is caused by social pressures and norms and Westermarck imprinting.

But say if a brother and sister are brought up separately then they may find one another highly sexually attractive when they meet as adults (like in Koi Kaze). This attraction is known as genetic sexual attraction and is seen in cousin couples when first, second, and third cousin meet as adults and engage in romantic and/or sexual relationships.

Japanese media seems to abusive with "Forbidden Love" in general and not just incest. Homosexuality, incest, lolicon, student-teacher relationships, opposing family(ies) (think Romeo and Julet) and, age gap (ten or more years in age difference) are all types "Forbidden Love" and the Japanese Otaku culture is full of it. Now some of these "Forbidden Love" relationships are considerably unhealthy (physically, genetically, and/or socially) but some aren't. For example the sort-of-incest between stepbrother and stepsister is sort-of-expected by society and usually doesn't lead to your family, friend and, work associations ostracizing you (well sometimes).

My thoughts on incest is really just a-typical "I don't like it". And I know that it comes from my culturally driven belief that it is wrong . . . Well, that and genetic diseases from inbreeding. I have a lot of information on biology and sociology but I just still can't get rid of my bias to incest (nor do I want to). Even just reading or watching something about it makes my stomach curl (well not when it's a stepbrother / stepsisters relationship, for some odd reason. Maybe it's all the animes I've watched?). Still the "Forbidden Love" (only in stories!) thing still interest me (well not homosexuality because it hurts my masculine pride. And yes both Yuri and Yaoi) but all difficult romantic relationships. Getting back on task, I think that incest in media, of any kind, can be bad for the social developmental growth of children and teens (not always but can be) as it show acceptance for a socially unaccepted practice. That's my statement and I'm sticking to it.

The Japanese seem obsessed with incest, at least between siblings. In the west, it seems only hardcore porno would even touch that topic with a ten foot pole. I suspect that there is so much popular entertainment that touches on incest in Japan because it is a real problem that their society is dealing with, not just fantasy about forbidden fruit. I have some crackpot theories, but since I am not a scientist, I can't test them. Here goes.

I suspect that under normal circumstances, the pheromones of close blood relatives are not attractive, so most people would never even consider it. In low population enclaves like the Appalachian mountains, cousin marriages and inbreeding happen out of necessity. You won't meet anyone you aren't at least distantly related to without leaving the hollow, and moving far away. After several generations of this, the pheromones of close blood relatives can become just as attractive any anyone's. While Japan is not a low population enclave, it is an insular nation, so it may have a similarly shallow gene pool.

Another population group that inbreeds a lot are people who believe themselves to be royalty and nobility. Japanese society had a feudal hierarchy like medieval Europe until the early 20th century. People who thought that they were blue bloods, and dared not dilute their bloodlines by mingling with commoners, may have also made for a narrow gene pool where the pheromones of close blood relatives become attractive.
