Dendetsu wrote: Well.....I'm trying to learn as much Kanji as I can, so far I know: 1: 美 = Beauty (Bi) 2: 世界 = World (Sekai) 3: 足 = Leg (Ashi) 4: 月= Moon (Tsuki) 5: 死 = Death (Shi) 6: 父 = Father (Chi Chi) 7: 火 = Fire (Ho) 8: 水 = Water (Sui) 9: 今 = Now (Ima) 10: 夏 = Summer (Natsu) 11: 手 = Hand (Te) 11: 真 = New (Shin) And, hopefully this is the right section. Well, 月 also means month- because the month is based upon a lunar cycle in most culture, I suppose that it would make sense. Second, 真 is not 'new', 新 is, 真 on the other hand means ‘real’。 |

I have realy enjoied the study of the Japanese language and have mastered aprox. 240 or so Kanji that I see on a daily basis and some I recognise after I see the context. A few good resources for kanji and other related Japanese grammar topic are:
http://www.jisho.org/ http://linear.mv.com/cgi-bin/j-e/jis/tty/nocolor/dict.html?SASE=/cgi-bin/j-e/jis/tty/dict And several books that help, Kodansha's essential kanji dictionary, this has only let me down twice so far and recently with 吾 which is a very old kanji refering to self or I, like わたし=私。It was primarily used by royalty. Kind of an odd piece of kanji history I found interesting. Oh if you use microsoft you can enable Japanese in world region settings, it's alot of fun to play with in word. |

The kanji really aren't that difficult if you work towards them the right way 「AKA the fun way (゜∀゜)」
I can read about 200 and write about 100 without much thought and I learn about 2-7 more a day If you keep it fun you never get tired of learning more! My recommendations... Spoiler Alert! Click to show or hide Use http://www.surusu.com/ to help you drill Read http://www.alljapaneseallthetime.com/blog/ to guide you Buy Japanese books, seems like a waste but trust me it helps in the long run (I even get a monthly 電撃大王 Dengeki Daioh. Couldn't read it at first but I'm loving having things to read now that I've gotten better) Watch Japanese TV http://xorsyst.com/japan/watch-japanese-tv-online/ PS watching CSI is great but is a bit trippy seeing it dubbed into Japanese :p If you really want a textbook either get Genki, or the one I prefer http://www.amazon.com/Elementary-Japanese-Vol-Yoko-Hasegawa/dp/0804835047/ It's good, hardback so it will last you, and cheap by college textbook standards (It's recommended for high schools as well) Some assorted Links for any still reading... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_verb_conjugations_and_adjective_declensions Basic verb info http://www.jgram.org/ A VERY good grammar resource http://jisho.org/kanji/radicals/ To help you if there's no furigana http://www.furiganizer.com/ To GIVE you furigana (゜∀゜) http://tangorin.com/ To look up words Good luck Japanese learners Ill see you on ニコニコ動画 (゜ω゜) |

uhm... I'm JLPT3, I know around 300, but my advice is that if you're an anime and japan fan, don't hesitate to start attending formal Japanese lessons, It takes a long time to learn this language and I only wish I had started earlier, because I know I'd probably be more fluent by now.

The kanji character for love (ai) is: 愛 Regarding programs for writing in japanese, you can google it in and find some. The most popular I've heard is one called NJstar, but it's not free. I use a mac, so it's built in. :) About this thread, I remember there was a japanese language thread... I can't find it at the moment though. Here's one for the road: 花 (Hana; flower) + 火 (Ka; Fire) = 花火 (Hanabi; fireworks) Wait I have a nac to. Where do I go? |

You can toggle the international text input by accessing your System Preferences. Select the Language & Text pane (in some older versions, this might be called the International pane - basically it looks like the Unicef flag or something). Once opened, click the tab Input Sources and scroll down until you see Kotoeri. You can select what Japanese input you can use. The basic includes Romaji, Katakana, and Hiragana, but there are other settings you can toggle on/off. Once you've activated it, you should see an item appear in your menu bar (it may look like a letter "A" or an American flag). Use this to toggle on/off the different keyboard inputs. By default, I keep mine on Romaji. The keyboard shortcuts to toggle the different inputs may seem a bit weird at first, but it's control+shift+J for Hiragana, and control+shift+K for Katakana. To switch back to Romaji, it's control+shift+semicolon. BTW, as an update to that old post, International text input is available on Windows machines running Vista and up. Just google it to figure out how to toggle it on/off. I forget at the moment. |

@Bambiis
No problem at all! And yes you do forget Kanji from time to time but you probably forget how to spell things in English too sometimes (God knows I do ALL the time) but don't sweat it, you'll re-remember the few forgotten one's pretty quickly, and here's an bonus link for your troubles http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-9g-49-en-70-198v.html If you have a DS this is a must have. Its a simple portable dictionary that has handwriting recognition and is compatible with American (And I believe PAL) DS, DS Lite, and probably DSi systems. No 3DS though Nintendo decided to region lock it to us importers dismay ORZ But I would truly recommend it, I personally never leave the house without it and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg like a portable electronic dictionary. Have fun and keep on learning (゜ω゜) |
