Family members claim they called police for help Wednesday morning, but when officers arrived, they were treated like criminals and an officer shot and killed their family dog. It all unfolded in the 1100 block of Fiji Lane in Landover.
Four-year-old Mercedes, a Rottweiler mix, is the latest dog shot and killed by police in Prince George's County.

Dog owner Sterling Barlow said about Mercedes, "Cold blood... Shot in the head for no reason."

The problem started when owner Sterling Barlow's brother pulled into the family driveway after work early Wednesday morning. The family claims two men immediately approached, armed with a gun and demanding his car. The brother managed to fight them off, ran into the house and came back out firing his gun.

"If somebody did that to your family you will retaliate the best way you know how," said Barlow.

After a shootout with the alleged robbers, the two brothers called police. When police arrived, Barlow says things got out of hand with the officers and his innocent dog paid the tragic price.

Barlow said, "One grabs me in the head lock and starts punching me in the face."

Mother Dwana Barlow said, "The police officer wouldn't even let me go to the bathroom... and held me hostage in my own house."

While being wrestled to the ground by five different cops, Barlow and witnesses in the neighborhood tell us a female Prince George's County officer shot the dog in the head.

Barlow stated, "While this was going on I said 'please, don't point a gun at my dog.' I begged her. She didn't need to be involved in this. She was in the yard."

But Barlow was arrested and charged with multiple crimes, including insulting an officer. Police say the officer acted appropriately when shooting the dog.

Neighbor Barbara Wells said, "The dog did not attack anyone. He never approached anyone. Even as the officers grabbed Sterling the dog didn't do anything."

Police spent hours Wednesday searching for the full police report. Around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, police called ABC 7 News on the phone and confirmed that an officer did shoot and kill the dog out of self defense. There will be a police investigation but that officer will not be placed on administrative leave.

The alleged robbers have not been found.

"Sterling Barlow has since been charged with assaulting a police officer, failure to obey a lawful command and disorderly conduct, and police seized seven guns from his home, including an illegal sawed-off shotgun, Ellis said. Micah Barlow was not charged with any crime. Police are investigating the carjacking, but Ellis said he did not have any information about it."

So as for the complaint of being treated like ciminals, seems like the shoe fit after all.

To bad about the dog, but there is no way of knowing if these people are telling the truth, the whole event seems a bit off.
We are talking about two guys age 21 and 24 who figure it's ok to keep 7 guns in their house, including an illegal sawed-off shotgun.

This version seems a bit different than the one I read; http://www.gazette.net/stories/09242010/prinnew103218_32557.php

In any case, RIP Mercedes, agressive or not your death was purely due to human ignorance.

Fuck that that just makes me plain angry!!

I hate cops, infact I DISPISE them. They never do anything useful.

I got pulled over and breathalised for absolutely NO reason once, I was driving PERFECTLY well and they just pulled me over and did the usual shit I was like "Couldn't there be something truly worth your time going on right now?" < actual words. After going through my documents and all that jazz I just said "Thanks for wasting my time and your own, bye!" and drove off. Dickheads.

Another time was when my Brother's fuckface "friend" got arrested for braking into a caravan and he plain lied and told them my Bro was involved aswell. So they come to our house at 11pm at night, scare the shit out of my Mother because she thought the worst immediately. Turned out all they were doing was arresting my Bro for braking into a caravan and they took him to the station and whatever and chucked him out on the streets at 5am!! WE had to go pick him up from one of the roughest areas around. Its just fucking wrong. For something so minor couldn't they have waited til morning to arrest him for something he didn't even do? Its affected my Mother for life. Nothing worse than seeing a cop van pull up outside your house and knock on your door. My heart was in my throat I thought I'd lost my Brother for a second.

This is what happens when you have a gun and Try to defend yourself. the police want us to be defenseless little cowards that depend on them for protection. so when they heard the guy had a Gun and gave the robbers a run for their money they just wherent going to have that!

this is what america has become. if you even dare think about owning a gun and using it on somebody who is trying to Rob/rape/kill you the police arrest you while the criminal escapes!(and shoot your dog just for the hell of it)

Cops aren't all bad, but the rules that keep them protected, does allow corruption to work it's way.
Sure, they could have been arresting an under the counter arms dealer for all we know, but because of his wrong, they can always call on an act of self defense even when on offense and cover tracks after the incident, sans problem

This is why I hate cops.

They abuse the power given to them. Shit like this happens time and time again.

RIP Mercedes

well the story does seem too one-sided. seven cops wouldn't wrestle down a guy without a reason, and dogs are very loyal creatures who would protect their masters at all costs. it seems unlikely that the dog didn't at least bark at the cops. the guy must have done something or like what nozferi said that they had seven guns in their house. cops do suck though. they are often way too rough. they abuse their power. and only 25% of criminals are in jail. well cops are just a bunch of big guys who like pushing people around and also failed highschool and didn't want to do anything else so they decided to use their big stature to their advantage to become cops and so they can push people around as work.
