Now that it's over, I have to say it was pretty good up until those last three episodes.

It started out examining and name dropping all sorts of real-world mysteries - aliens, monsters, artifacts and so on. Like if the old Leonard Nimoy show In Search Of... had been turned into an anime. The War of the Worlds apocalypse was way out of left field and awesome and the count-down clock to doomsday made for some great suspense. Given that the basis of the show seemed to allow for them to bring up a new paranormal artifact/creature/location each episode or two, I could see this show running for a good while. Plus those little chupacabras were sweet. They actually got the details right (little, green, red eyes, dog legs, spiny) so that I was able to identify what it was before they said it.

But then those last couple episodes happened.

Suddenly they dropped every pretense of it being based upon real-world occult mysteries and turned into run of the mill, standard-grade Final Fantasy style action-adventure.a twist coming from nowhere, hinted at by nothing. It's like two different studios had this series. And then there was the last episode (which I won't spoil because it just came out) where... well, stuff happened. Really fast. I'm not going to say I didn't like the ending, because I did. I don't exactly know why I did, but I did. Maybe it was Fumiaki finally getting some play or Maya's dad's suit.

Why the change? It didn't really add anything and, to me, really swerved off of the path to greatness it was on. It's like if partway through the first season of Heroes, everyone put on a spandex suit and Sylar tried to TAKE OVER THE WORLD! Or if several seasons into X-Files, Mulder and Scully finally meet the aliens... and then get to fly into space, visit new planets and help fight an intergalactic war. In the broad sense, yes; all of these situations COULD fit into their respective shows, but it would be stupid. Witches and demons do fit into the world Occult Academy had set up, but they just weren't executed very well. I saw Mikaze's turn coming a mile away, but not as a floating, half-naked Imma chargin mah lazerz 'black mage'.

I guess what I'm saying is this: they could have done better. If they had taken it down a more logical path, if they had strung out that last episode over an hour, maybe if they had another season, even.. if they had done something else, I'd keep watching it. I'd re-watch it. But it fell off so bad at the end there that.. well, I'm just going to go and sit through Durarara again. Or maybe Time of Eve. Oh, hey; I just bought Haibane Renmei, maybe I should crack those open... anything but this again.

M mm. It was fast just like you described, it seemed as though another studio took over in the end or as if they were expecting the serious to be longer but were given the axe much sooner than was anticipated and squeezed in the carefully paced awesomeness in just a short number of episodes.

I don't like the serious any less because lets face it, some awesome stuff did happen in those overtly compressed episodes.

May Maya's hotness grace our screens once more, amen.

I don't really think that the series took an "axe",it was probably planned since the very beginning since the episode counts was already being decided on...And it felt like that kind of ending to me anyway. It doesn't do justice to "slice of life" genre so it's bound to end in such a way anyway...It's rushed, but that's how it is.

I;m just sad it ended so fast. Guess I;m use to ending series having long drawn out ends like in DBZGT. It still was a faster ending than both Elfen Lied and Chrono Crusade. Why the hell do good things never last?

I felt the ending was necessary and made sense. I would say the magic fight near the end was out of character for the series, but the plot worked out accordingly with Miya's initial thoughts of the "demon king falling from the sky" being the Nostradamas Key. It was also a lovely way Fumiaki could turn his life around. :-)

You should re-watch it again if you didn't get it. The series was pretty straight-forward. I really wish it didn't end so soon, like 11 eyes and Starship Operators

I have seen animes that had far worse endings and rushed conclusions than this - in fact, I thoroughly enjoyed this anime and am completely satisfied with the finale.

I don't say this haughtily, but I say it based off the final conclusion.

Yes, it is true that the last 3 episodes packed everything in, but it still was able to finish the story and not leave a cliff hanger. Anyone that has seen a Back to the Future movie or anything with Time travel knows about paradoxes, space time continuums and the fact that sceneries can change in an instant based on time travel theory - so the touching ending with our family dinner really brought a satisfying conclusion to me without the authors having to spoon feed us everything (no pun intended Bumei!)

Now, going back to the last 3 episodes, the only negative I did get was the fact that all of this happened in the 3 episodes, when it should have been developed even further over at least 5-6. - in other words...remove the snow girl arc and start showing a little more deceptive suggestions from the witch - I mean, come on, I am sure we all knew something was wrong when Bumei had this hot girl all over him and she knew everything that he loved to eat...not to mention spending more time with him as the doomsday time approached.

Also, for those saying that there was no foreshadowing of this is ridiculous. The problem was it was all shown in the first few episodes with supernatural forces trying to kill Maya, the writing on the wall, etc...but from here, we went into fun mode with Maya and Bumei's antics and the rest of the gang.

What this show really needed was a few more episodes or an arc or 2 deleted focusing more on the witch to make it perfect.

Otherwise, I was fulfilled and am looking forward to picking this up on Bluray to diagnose it and watch the other short episodes!
