I was surprised that even in japan its weird to be called an Otaku.

It's never been anything but. It's only we western fans who made it an accolade. Similarly Ronin. has this Eastwood-esque cachet in the West but actually it pretty much means LOSER. A 'masterless samurai (Ronin)' is a FAILED samurai.

But yeah Otaku has all the negative baggage we associate with whatever labels we apply to people who were fursuits or star trek uniforms to Jury Duty and other socially inappropriate places.

Why? because of the title? the concept? the delivery of the actual episodes outstrips any expectations based on summaries.

Now that I think about Kirino more....I think she would piss off any other brother if it wasnt Kyosuke. I mean she did elbow him in the face when she was playing that 1 arcade game. I would imagine anyone woulda flipped.

But I still gotta love that hot-blooded Tsundere

Oh, very much so. It would be a complete disaster if she was outed as an Otaku. She would be ostracized from the modeling community which is where she get the money for her hobby. In school she'd be mercifully made fun of until the only people who would accept her would be the three otaku in her classroom, ie. dorks. The Japanese culture is about family, career and social status and being a NEET is also a insulting term "Not in Education, Employment or Training". Notice a trend with these web backed definitions?

The passage below was taken from the Anime News Network website for Otaku. (tend to agree with the definition)

The word otaku spelled as お宅 is a polite way of saying "your house" and, by extension, "your household". But in the early 1980s, a different meaning emerged, used to refer to hardcore anime/manga fans and later to hardcore fans of any hobby. Although its origins are uncertain, the earliest known examination of the word appeared in 1983 when Akio Nakamori published a series of articles titled "Otaku no Kenkyu", describing the socially inept males who referred to each other as otaku.

While the word otaku always had a negative connotation, in 1989 it took a whole new dark dimension. Following the kidnapping and murder of four young girls, the home of the main suspect Tsutomu Miyazaki was searched and, in addition to evidence, revealed large amounts of anime and manga. The mass media latched on the label of "otaku" to describe the murderer and in the public consciousness the word quickly came to be associated with sociopaths.

In the years following this incident the stigma associated with the word otaku gradually died down. But even today it remains an unconventional lifestyle choice and labelling oneself as otaku is done with no small amount of defiance and/or self-deprecation.

Outside Japan the word never entered mainstream consciousness, and anime fans oblivious to the whole Miyazaki affair freely started using otaku amongst themselves as a badge of honor.

the overall story is pretty original but for the reason that it may have a brother and sister complex in it is the main reason i'm not going to be waiting anxiously for this each week. btw It seems this is only going to be a 13 episodes long anime.

gotta admit if this series did go into a Sibling Romance story line I would probably stop watching.

The way it is now, with the brother helping his sister learn to love her hobby and being dragged along at her pace, is how I hope they keep it. I particularly liked episode 3 where he won big brother of the year award for "saving the little sisters".

Just a big brother looking out for his little sister's happiness, There is no need to take this series in any other direction.

Episode 4. Love itttt

The biggest shocker to me? It totally seems we are going to have Kirino's friend and Kyousuke hit it off most likely. The way Ayase's eyes were moving in an embarassing type of way pretty much gave that away for me. But she totally seems like the type who wouldnt even care what Kirino does. So thats cool.

But really, I need to see more of this

This has got to be THE cutest scene that I have ever seen in anime. Short and sweet
