Do all subbers not get money or do most subbers get money? It is it an actual occupation.

I don't see any reason why people would sub it.
Does subbing take a long time? If so can't people do something that is profitable?

Of course people who do the subs for anime dvds and stuff get paid for that. I think fansubbers mainly do it for the experience of either translating, encoding, or both. I'd imagine they would have some interest in the anime they are working on so they'd be doing it for their own benefit as well.

I've found major fans of something fall into two groups. Not just for anime but for almost anything people obsess over

There are the ones who become possessive of a series and don't want to share it with others (I've actually had someone in one of the clubs I was in see me reading a series and tell me to hide it and not to lend it to anyone cause she loves it and didn't want other people ruining it). they seem to feel the value of what they love decreases the more other people enjoy it. It's their secret treasure and no one else should have it.

and then there are the ones who want to share it with everyone no matter what. I think a lot of Fansubbers fall into this group. they love anime and want to expose as many people as possible to the shows they like. It lets them talk about it, speculate about the story, ship characters together, share fan art, etc...

Sure it takes a lot of effort and time to fan sub something but when it's something you love and want to share with people, who cares. It's worth it if just a handful of people come to love the same thing you do. And the more other people love it the more value it has to them.

They do it for the love. Because lots of people appreciate being able to watch an interesting show in another language they don't speak but can now comprehend thanks to subtitling. Plus what is licensed and brought over legally is only a fraction of the anime that airs. So lots of stuff fails through the cracks, lots of GOOD stuff. It may never be licensed or brought over too and the only way to watch it is through fansubs.

Well, there's "right or wrong answer" to this question

1 - They're impatient
2 - the fans. Fans have a hate complex of not wanting to purchase the DVD, which's called; stealing in my book and in the anime staff/actors. They'd rather dl it

I cannot speak for other countries, but in the U.S., "what is licensed and brought over legally is only a fraction of the anime that airs", is no longer true, if you count availability at a legitimate online streaming site as "airing". In the past year or so, what hasn't been licensed has been a small fraction of what aired in Japan.

As to the topic itself, fansubbers do it for the same varied reason that anyone undertakes an effort without monetary compensation. It can range from a desire to help others, a sense of purpose, love of the material and a desire to promote it, to more "selfish" reasons, such as gaining experience in translating that could be used to obtain employment.

Most Fansubbers are hobbyists, others are doing it for fame or for the money or the any combination of the 3. Whatever the reason, Fansubbers brought anime to us and I'm very grateful for their effort.
