Hi,

Is crunchyroll compatible with the new Apple TV? (i.e., is it possible to stream over apple TV to our television)

Are there any future plans for this compatibility?

Thank you,

Shouldn't you ask apple?
I mean, this site is small-time compared to apple.

It isn't now because the apple tv doesnt allow apps like the iphone/ipad/ipods. There is hope however, the apple tv uses the same OS as the other apple products so they could update it at some pont to use apps then CR guys can make one.

All I can say is that I haven't heard anything regarding Crunchyroll being offered through Apple TV but we are committed to providing our content through the latest and greatest platforms/devices. So if Apple TV takes off, I'm sure we'll take advantage of the platform.

Supposedly there's a feature on AppleTV called AirPlay that allows you to stream video content from an iPad to the AppleTV. It's supposed to automatically work with any application that uses the standard Apple media player. Don't know if Crunchyroll uses that library or not, so if anyone has an Apple TV and an iPad they could try it out.

@BasouKazuma: that would be great! As far as I can understand your iPad/iPhone application and your web streaming uses different models (or technologies) so I always get better and faster result on my iPad then on my MacBook Pro. If apple TV version would be something like iPad version, it would be a total winner.

@mikeyoon: As far as I know, AirPlay is not active until iOS 4.2, which will come in mid November. Also, as you mentioned Crunchyroll might need to update their application to use that library.

Shenanigans.

I'll believe your claim of supporting the best platforms when Android is fully supported with an app.

Talk of Android belongs in the following thread so I responded there:

BasouKun has stated many times that developing an app for android is 10x harder then developing an app for an apple product and one of the main reasons is because the video player isn't as good for android as it is for the app store. Android 3.0 which is coming in December has some improvements for the app builder.

I don't see Google succeeding here Arimil. As of this week Fox refused to work with Google, making them the last of the major networks to turn Google down: http://www.fierceonlinevideo.com/story/another-one-bites-dust-comcast-xfinity-not-compatible-google-tv/2010-11-12

This might be a win for someone else. Maybe Apple's "hobby" will pay off - after all, Steve Jobs is betting Blu-ray will die in the near future.

I did get the new Apple TV and love it ...so I am biased. Having Crunchyroll on AppleTV to watch on the big screen would be amazing.

Regardless, thanks Crunchyroll team for iPhone, iPad, and computer support!!

To use airplay on apple tv Crunchyroll just has to not block the capability to the existing iPad app, assuming they are using the standard video playback. In other words airplay will work automatically in any app that uses iOs standard video playback unless the developer blocks it.

The airplay icon showed up after I updated my iPad to 4.2 last week. I have 2 apple tv's now, but haven't hooked them up just yet. I'm assuming if the icon showed up that it will at least attempt to forward the stream. Now if we can get the iOS app to perform reliably, it's all set.

Akherat, were you able to test the apple tv? Did it work? I'd rather not run out and buy one if it doesn't work, as that's all I would use it for.
