Penpals
Posted 10/23/10 , edited 10/23/10
I remember back before social networking when the only way to communicate with total strangers in other nations was to have a penpal.

In the 90's when I was in about the third grade, my teacher had the class write letters to someone from a school in a foreign country, and they would write back. So I had a pen pal in some far off place.

Today, all you have to do is go to a website to find like minded people anywhere in the world, it's easy to take for granted. Anyways, I love being able to talk with people from all over the place!

Aw, I remember those days. I also remember chunky computer, floppy disks and annoying dial up sounds.. And being forced to socialize and play outside because internet like this didn't exist unlike the kids nowadays pfft, honestly!

I know right! Who wants to be healthy and fit when you can talk to the globe!

Honestly I miss being young, where to go on a adventure, all you had to do is walk down the street, or explore a nearby construction site. I got into so much trouble lol. Nowadays if I want a real adventure, I need at least ten million bucks so I can travel the world to my hearts content... Oh how standards change in a terribly unrealistic way.

Ah, don't remind me. Those days are well and truly over, its quite sad. I think its downhill from now for kids. All my little siblings sit on iphones, laptops and playstations all day. They go outside for 20 minutes and feel like they've done a weeks worth of exercise. ..Oh no! That's what I've turned into. Eeee >< Haha
No, I like to think I balance my cyber world and reality world quite well still Its bedtime for me now!! 'Night

Aww, that's true. I once had very good cyber friends for almost 2 years but we lost in track. I think it's a good thing though, real life world still wins.

I've never had pen pals but I did have buddies online and I still have contacts with some but the thing that brought us to be friends fade as the world changes. So now Im not as confident to speak to them as I used to. T.T

Never had pen pals. I didn't like the idea then. When I had to do one for a grade, I wrote boring stuff so the kid wouldn't write me back lol Today, it'd be nice to do one now. Chatting online has became such a terrible bore.

I remember I had something like that in 5th grade. Even month my teacher would make us write a letter to someone in our local nursery home. Sometimes their replies were really sad like how they're so glad we write to them because they rarely get visited by their children/grandchildren. I hope my old teacher still does this.

I never had the chance to try out the penpal thing as a kid, only recently I remembered about it and tried it out, I am finding it interesting and fun. Not everyone is ready to respond to you, not to be negative about it, but it's true. You just have to be patient enough to find the lucky person it is you were searching for. That makes all the trial and effort worth it.

Then you both know your friendship will always be a permanent one, that will withstand all the bad thing's you may encounter. There's no avoiding that.

And you don't have to worry about all the little things that may make it wrong, and in so result in losing your new friend who you hoped from the beginning would be a true friend. Because you were both willing to take that chance to find it.

Well this is the way I see penpals, I can't say the same for the rest of you, I hope so though.
I know that I don't want it to be just "Hi, how are you?" and "How do things happen over there?" Because it would feel like an obligation to ask/ say just that. But truly try to make something more out of it other than that. Then what would be the point?

That's what friends are for, be it from your neighborhood or a friend from the other side of the world.
