Boxee Box & Linux Flash

Hi,

I was wondering whether the Boxxe app will get an update to allow 720p videos? I could be behind but last time I checked I was only getting 480p, with no choice.

I'm a GNU/linux user and we all know that there is no GPU acceleration in flash like the windows/mac counterparts which does not make for a very good experience unless your running a super computer. This made me wonder how the boxee box which runs a linux kernel is going to play back 720p/1080p flash streams....?

Furthermore, If the iPad and iPhone versions of crunchyroll do not deliver flash streams and effort has been made to offer an alternative stream format why has this not been offered to the web users? I'm just interested in the technical reasons.

Thanks.

Hi Matt,

Boxee currently is still 480p only. Once the Boxee box ships to us, we plan to test it out and update as necessary. However, note that Boxee's desktop app (for linux) still runs Flash, so it's the same decoding as the website.

The iOS streaming is completely different from web/flash streaming, and Flash does not support the same system as iOS.

We're currently trying to make our videos available on more and more platforms, and in higher and higher qualities. Stay tuned in the next few months! Thanks for your patience.

I Believe he wants to know why you guys haven't tried to make a Video Player using something other then flash for the computer. Not why you didn't chose flash for IOS.

Thanks Shinji,

I understand that iOS does not stream flash. So my guess is that you have a h.264/Quicktime stream for iOS which made me wonder whether the web site would receive the same treatment for html5. But really that doesn't solve the problem of needing a super computer given html5 is not hw accelerated just yet on any platform.

I don't mind paying for a great service :D
I'm just keen to watch 720p in my lounge without buying a copy of windows.

Though given what you said in your post I'm looking forward to the next few months. Can't wait to see what comes of the boxee box.

Thanks.

Using a normal web browser, goto www.crunchyroll.com and make sure you are logged in to your premium account. Then go into your account settings and then video preferences. Change the default video quality setting to 720p. Make sure it says saved on the screen and then launch the Boxee software, run the Crunchyroll app, make sure it logged you in and then launch any of your shows that you know has 720p. To check to see if it's working, hit the "i" key on your keyboard and make sure it says resolution is 1280 x 720 (it will show it in width and height numbers). Let me know if that works for you cause that's what I do for my setup.

Anyone with a better suggestion, please post it here.

When trying this out, It says it's running 720p but it definitely doesn't look it.

Shinji-san-

First off, thanks for the boxee box app! I love it. Quick thing though- I've noticed in some streams like 空のおとしもの and アスラクライン there's a little stutter. I pause and let the box sit for a bit to see whether the unit needs to cache but it still seems to happen. I'm wondering whether you've received other reports of this. My question then becomes whether it is the boxee software or whether it is the crunchyroll app. As far as connection speed in concerned, that isn't the issue as the boxee is on a hardwired network connected to a 16mbps connection. And- my laptop streams (on wireless) those without any stutter. Thanks!!

Yeah I think you're right. I thought it worked because on the Windows Boxee software when I hit the 'I" key the flash information said 1280 X 720 but now I'm not sure if the Boxee box is doing the same.

I'm having the same problem too m8. I was watching Naruto Shippuden and Bleach and had the same problem in both. What I noticed though is that it happens whenever there is an english subtitle on the screen. I assume you are Chinese/Japanese and therefore don't see the subtitles and that's why you didn't associate the problem with them. Watch any action scene without dialog and it will be smooth but as soon as people start to talk, it sticks and jumps forward.

I have sent twitter messages to both Crunchyroll and Boxee so far, no reply. I direct messaged someone from Crunchyroll using the forums, still no reply. I think I'm gonna post in the Boxee forums as well and see if I get any feedback. I believe the problem is the subtitles though and I think I heard that the Boxee box has bugs associated with SAA/ASS subtitles which is what I believe subtitled Anime at Crunchyroll uses.

Still would be nice to get an official reply from someone.

Hey Salty-

The boxee staff made my workaround for the SSA/ASS subtitles a sticky on the boxee box help forums. Send a direct e-mail to avner@boxee.tv. He's very responsive and staff is really helpful. I'll see if I can replicate the stutter when subtitles kick in.

Heh, I wish my Japanese was that good where I could always get away with no subtitles.

I got a response back both from the @boxee_help twitter account as well as on the Boxee box forums. A boxee team member told me that they would contact Crunchyroll to iron out the bugs. The guy who replied to me on twitter hadn't heard about the issue but told me to email the issue to the support (at) boxee.tv . I'll check the forums again for the sticky you mentioned but if it was turn off overscan then that wouldn't help me because my overscan is already set to off.

So yeah my problem was never that you couldn't see the subtitles, cause I see them just fine. It's just that whenever they appear onscreen it causes the video to pause then skip forward however long the pause was.

The soft subtitles are very resource intensive and will cause the video to stutter if the system does not have enough resources to decode the video and the subtitles at the same time. I'm not sure if our staff has messed around with the Boxee Box yet but, once we do, we intend to improve our Boxee app. If "subtitle smoothing" is enabled on the Boxee app by default, then that would most likely be the problem.

Yup. That's what I gathered. (I was going to see if that happened on my streams too- narrowing it down to stuttering when subtitles were on the screen.) Hopefully it'll get fixed, whatever the source.

As a side note: the ASS/SSA issue is resolved and should be out in the next patch. I went trolling through their JIRA site.

Damnit... I was hoping this wasn't the issue. It seems no matter the application, you need to be so careful as a developer when dealing with an Atom CPU. As you said hopefully it's only subtitle smoothing needing to be turned off to make it smooth again. I'd prefer jaggy text over choppy video anyday.

Oh last thing though : Is it also true that the Crunchyroll app on the Boxee box only plays 480p video even if a 720p steam is available?

Thanks for the update Kenji, much appreciated.

Wish the patch update would drop this afternoon/night so everybody in the community would start chilling out. I only NEED 4 things working on this box now to make me happy

1. Crunchyroll app playing flawlessly in 720P video

2. Gametrailer videos go automatically to full screen with a provision for the ones that request your age.

3. TrueHD audio and DTS Master audio working flawlessly

4. Vudu and Netflix support with the latter having the 5.1 sound the PS3 does.

Do all that and I'd be a happy camper. In fact, I might post those requests in the Boxee forum
