I've heard many people complain about how they didn't like the endings of certain anime shows. Sometimes it's just hard to tell what most people like because everyone has such diverse taste and it's really hard to please everyone! So I want to find out what most people think. What would generally be your ideal kind of ending for an anime? A happy ending? A sad ending? A little of both? (And don't be vague and say things like a "satisfying" ending. Please elaborate).

An open ended ending (because that isn't worded funny at all). Where things could be continued or they could be left alone. That allows for the audience to fill in the blanks if a second season doesn't come around. But by leaving and ending open, the creators can make a second season without contradicting what has already been set in stone, and it can still make sense. I don't care if an ending is sad or happy, however sad endings tend to stick with me for longer so I would say they are probably more effective for me personally.

You probably know what I mean by open ended ending and sad endings but I am going to give examples anyway.

Open ended examples: Ghost in The Shell, Samurai Champloo, Cromartie High School
Sad ending examples: Cowboy Bebop, Serial Experiments Lain, Now and Then, Here and There

The ending of Spiral was kind of disappointing (even though it's my fav anime), and also End of Evangelion's ending was....WHOAH...
So for an excellent ending... I would say something like Black cat (manga). In this series, no main protagonist characters died, and the only characters that did were the villains. Other antagonists that weren't important were also deceased. This kind of anime where it isn't heart-breaking toward the end is the best kind of anime ending!! BTW Dragonball Z actually follows this guideline too

KHR ending was the most disappointing ending for an anime ever.

To answer your question, that depends. If it's a sad ending, I want it to be really touching. If it's a happy one, make it substantial, not just an episode with people all happy and thankful that a certain "nightmare" or "difficulty" has just ended. ---> (KHR ending)

An ending where everybody comes out alive. This includes tough looking characters (muscular, yet have a caring heart). Most endings are shown with like 50% characters dead.

A perfect example for this would be;
- Black Cat

Train, Eve, Sven and River all survive

And what exactly do you mean by "substancial"? Care to explain?

I have no idea why I used that word but if I remember correctly I was thinking of an ending with a little bit of dept in it, not just some boring episode for rejoice and goodbyes.
