I've always wanted to start a forum and here's something I've always wondered. What do you do or say when there's an awkward silence?

I've actually done this once haha. However you must be careful in this one, because I think it made the girl see me differently afterwords, even though I said I was kidding.

I'll usually say a string of nonsensical words. ie: So what's hip-happity happening in the dip-doopity.
Most people think I'm weird.

This happens to me a lot, actually.

What I do is play a nice game of 1,000 questions until we can find some grounds on which to have a conversation and get over the awkward silence. Then you go on from there. This usually works, well , unless you don't like this method, but how else will you get over it and finally stop worrying about it?

But it depends on the situation, person, etc. Not always going to work.

Worth a shot if you're actually trying to talk with someone who wants to be your friend or the other way around. If it still gets like this after a few attempts, don't give up!! Keep at it. Can't say you didn't try if it doesn't work out. Just start off with basic commonalities and build onto it with other points that can stem off onto an actual conversation, don't just stop it at with one-sided answers and shove it off. It makes it look like you don't want to be around the person, and would rather be doing something else.

You can add onto this because I forgot some other points.

lol, when there's an awkward silence with my friend it'll go like this:
Me: So...how was you're week?
Friend: hm, good!... how bout you?
Me: good...
...
...
*awkward silence*
....
Friend: you know what? A cow just died.
Me: er...

Fart and leave with this look on your face

Or have a catchphrase ready; I've been a culprit of awkward silence moments in the past, but if you have a solid catchphrase, you can turn it around. Some people will try to bring up a current topic, but if the silence was created by an off kilter remark, laughing your way out of it is probably the best way to go.

Me and my friend look at each other in "times of crisis" and then answer our catchphrase "what would Aquaman say?"

e.g. We're kicking it with some ice cream. Thick girl walks by. We stop talking/eating & stare. "What would aquaman say?" he utters after a brief silence. I reply octopussy. "Octopussy?" Yeah, she's got enough legs for four of us

And another is to just say shut up to break up the silence.
It's usually followed by a "but I didn't say anything" or a "huh?"
