I've read a few answers from CrunchyRoll about the decrease in video quality, and TBH they don't really match up with what I've seen.

I have an iPad 3, and video quality was absolutely excellent using an old version of the iOS app. It may have been 720p, but definitely no less than that, and to be honest I would be very surprised if it wasn't 1080p. Not only that, but the encoding was good - no blockiness on fast sections, etc.
I've just got an iPad Mini, and with version 2.0.3 of the app (which has a completely different UI to the old version on my iPad 3) I get basically worthless video. Looks like SD or lower, and not only low resolution but with awful artifacts on fast motion - looks to me like a much lower bitrate.

I streamed an episode of humanity has declined on both devices, one after the other, on the exact same WiFi connection. I also checked on my laptop, where 720p and 1080p both look fine to me.

New, more or less unwatchable video:

Old, frankly wonderful quality video:

These are both crops of the full image, probably about 1/3 of the width and height of the full thing.

I'm sure this is just a mix-up, but at the moment I basically don't want to watch anything on my new iPad, and I need to make sure to avoid upgrading the app on the old one. I'm more or less certain that if I did, the video quality would drop too.

I would appreciate a direct answer about what causes it, not a vague excuse about connection speed, etc. If anyone can give any suggestions for what's causing this and a way to test it, and I will be happy to test it out, because so far I'm really confused about what causes this.

It was definitely no more than 480p being streamed from Crunchyroll, as the app for the PS3 was the first* to offer HD streams. In fact, as of mid-July it was apparently only 360p maximum.

*Unless you count the Boxee app, which had the advantage of being able to use the same Flash streams encoded for web browsers.

It might be nice if CR included a "diagnostic info" section in the next version of the app that would display the current streamed resolution and/or bit rate.

As I understand it, the iOS app is required to use an adaptive bit rate, and it is clear that the newer version of the app is reacting as if it has lower bandwidth.

Can you please give me some specific titles & episodes that you have watched that HAVE NOT shown up in your History.

Thanks so much!

How did you go back to an older version?

Since the beginning of time, the Crunchyroll app has used the default video player given to us by Apple. This video player is like a black box. There's nobs on the outside that we can tweak, but what actually goes on inside the box is completely at the discretion of Apple. Our app uses adaptive video streaming, which as the name implies adapts the quality of your video according to your bandwidth. Unfortunately, how and when the video quality changes is completely decided by the video player. With every update of iOS, Apple changes how the video player works a little bit. As of iOS 6, we've noticed that the performance of the video player has turned to garbage, which may be what you are seeing on your iPad mini. Verion 2.04, which should be on the app store in a few hours, has ditched said video player in favor of a different one that we think works better. Please upgrade to that on your iPad mini, and share with us your thoughts. =)

Hi there! As a follow up, do you remember which episodes you've watched on which devices? Thanks! This is been really helpful for us.

I've been having issues with mirroring to my AppleTV from my iPad, getting a "there was an error loading this content" error (real useful, I know), and I'm not sure exactly what might be causing it. Is this a rare problem to be having?

Can you go into 'Settings' and try resetting your settings on the device?

Well, I'm glad all my problems seem fixed now with this new update. Good work!

Quality of the video doesn't seem improved for me, but the new player is super-fast and the TV output works as expected. I hope to see at least 720p streaming one of these days. If it works on PC, shouldn't work as well on iOS?

The thing is, I've been using the Crunchyroll app with a different account (my wife's), and that account IS signed up as a "premium member" account.
