I agree with a previos member (im still trying to figure out how to make things work around here) sand chronicles was so cute as well as three other the person mentioned...um i really like "The One" as well but i haven't finished it, future diaries isn't that long and its a good psychological one (you know those normally take forever) i was also into red river, though that one runs a bit longer...Tail of the moon was relatively short, and very cutesy....i just realized many shorter mangas are quite girly....or maybe it's just me.

My vision of short manga is three volumes or less, so:
-AAA (three volumes)
-The Prince's Cactus (two volumes)
-Mistress Fortune (one volume)

You know how some of Rumiko Takahashi's stories go on and on and on, and often have inconclusive endings? Well, try her series Mermaid Saga. (Wikipedia link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mermaid_Saga ) It's fairly short at only four volumes, but full of serious plot and grim fighting. One person mentioned in on page two of the thread.

Also, don't miss Azumanga Daioh. It was originally published in four trade paperbacks, and there's a collection which contains the entire story. And it's mostly a four-panel comic, so it's a quick read. Like most four panel comics, it's slice of life, and it's usually humorous. But even though nothing unusual or dramatic happens in the final chapters (the girls graduate from high school), I found it really moving.
