Do you guys/gals think this is a good reason to attempt to get rid of lightweight arms?

honestly it wouldn't help if you eliminated lightweight arms, kids will be brought into wars with whatever is available, however they can be by the regular perpetrators. Just a sad fact that there are people like that in the world.

The reason is noble, but in practice, it won't be effective;
Most of the youth-warriors are part of a rebel movement that obtain their weaponry through illegal channels, so I doubt that will do any good.
Also, suppose you do manage to obtain and ban all the lightweight arms, what's to prevent them from being used in other ways? They are all already used as minesweepers, they would probably get more extensive training, learn how to use rocket launchers in pairs of 2 or 3. Any larger weapons for that matter.
Imagine them having a tank with anti artillery on it. The moment they kill the shooter on the tank, you could still have up to 5 other kids in the tank to man that station as opposed to 1 or 2 fellow soldiers;

I personally think they should be cracking down on the actual act of kidnapping children and/or raising them to be soldiers. Stamping out the trade of lightweight arms will affect the people who actually might need them in situations where heavy weapons are impractical or cumbersome.

Yeah, give them heavy artillery ... so they can develop rippin' biceps and upperbody strength.

Maybe.. just ban children.

That is not possible.... You know that in some countries, the government themselves recruited children to fill their ranks. Moreover, even if the UN or some benevolent organization or country manage to ban exporting small arm weapons, they can still acquire it by making a light arms weapon factory (it is possible to manufacture a reliable imitation of that gun like in this link) or purchasing it in the black market at an absurd price.
