ok i just thought about this after reading the anime cliche forum
so is there any anime that is the non typical.. theres a few ..
like for the shojo one i think it would have to be Kaichou wa maid sama the main girl character was not your typical ditzy
, clumsy, squeky voice, she was the total opposite and it worked(:

for shonen i think it would have to be Rave Master: it took BOTH the main girl and boy character to defeat the 'final' boss

both of them were awsome (:
SO point is: Is there any anime that you think that deserves to be recognized IN YOUR OPINION to be different (in
a good way) from the typical storyline and why

Kimi Ni Todoke!

Not your typical shoujo anime!
The main character is different and the plot is also not as cliched! And it's so sweet!

No. Kaichou wa maid sama is still the same type of stereotypical CRAP that you'll find in most shoujo manga/anime.

Kuragehime, on the other hand, is an excellent example. The characters may not be unique, personality-wise, but the way the series approaches everything makes it so much better than other series aimed mostly at women.
The World God Only Knows, is also an example of stereotypical characters being used in a different sort of way.

No anime/manga will ever be able to be truly unique and non-cliche'. The difference, imo, between good anime and bad anime is how they approach the cliche's.

Cowboy Bebop - A truly unique masterpiece.
Outlaw Star - Another good sci-fi anime
Irresponsible Captain Tylor - Nothing like an idiotic genius becoming captain of a ragtag crew and a spaceship.
Higurashi - Probably the greatest horror anime.

Theres a lot more out there that are pretty unique but it'd take a while to list them all.

I got a list of great animes that do all sorts of crazy and new things you would never expect. Some have some cliches but they can easily be ignored or their used to be made fun of.

1. FLCL. This show is a must, it's the show that opened my world of complex literature and movies into the wacky universe of anime. It's also the Anime that made me fall in love with complex meanings and metaphors for anime. It's a must. Who knows you might learn a life lesson from it... or not.

2. Bakemonogatari. Practically developed from the same genius behind FLCL. This set of old style Japanese mythology stories are set up as a long series of scenes that are acted out by the characters as though they were characters in a play. You will actually notice that almost every scene is developed as a stage with only pieces of scenery that matter to the characters interactions with one another. That and add in the fun of all the complex word problems and the well put together banter between the characters you get a complex drama play.

3. School Days. Holy Crap is this a wild adventure. It breaks the mold as well as slaps classic cliches in the face with a well deserved back hand. Many people surprisingly don't like this series, but I thought it was very well done and was needed as something new and different for the stereotypical Harem Anime. Give it a try, it's intense.

4. Futakoi Alternative. Wow, sometimes even the darkest of black musty coal may once in a while hold a diamond. A show called Futakoi was originally an over dramatizing pathetic excuse of a romance anime. God I suffered through that piece of crap like no other, this was back when I was first getting into anime and didn't know any better. So I was really going out on a limb when I decided to watch a show called Futakoi Alternative. Same writer, same illustrator, same characters, but something amazing happened. Somebody grew a brain and stepped out of the stereotypical genre and cliches and created a work of art. Futakoi Altenative with it's wacky insane plot line, it's easily lovable and deep characters, and it's very overwhelming yet intriguing state of mind. Another must watch.

5. Death Note. Everybody knows about this one. The well plotted and well written controversial story of a Sociopath who wants nothing other than to save the world by any means necessary. Need I say more?

I have some more but these ones are my favorites and they are the best. They break genres and they break cliches.

Serial Experiments Lain - Quite possibly, in my humble opinion, the least cliche anime I have ever had the privilege to see.

Why?

no world ending crisis
no panty shots
no nose bleeds
no harems
no ditsy girls
no long battles (no battles to begin with)
no flashbacks
no relationships (meaning that all those relationship related cliches are non-existent)
no "contrived weather"
no dead parents
no "happenstance"

I could go on forever, but I think you get the idea.

I was looking at what some individuals had written on the Anime Cliches thread when writing this.

Some good philosophical and/or experimental anime are Paranoia Agent, Gantz, Kino's Journeys, and Mushishi. Outside of series, a lot of anime movies avoid being cliche storms, such as the works of the late great Satoshi Kon: Perfect Blue, Tokyo Godfathers, and Paprika.

No such thing as a non typical anime. Everyone's opinion is different towards how people think what anime stands out the most.

Koi Kaze is one non typical anime.
The protagonist is not rebellious no shy teenager. It is about an older man.
