Serial Experiments Lain - Quite possibly, in my humble opinion, the least cliche anime I have ever had the privilege to see.

Why?

no world ending crisis
no panty shots
no nose bleeds
no harems
no ditsy girls
no long battles (no battles to begin with)
no flashbacks
no relationships (meaning that all those relationship related cliches are non-existent)
no "contrived weather"
no dead parents
no "happenstance"

I could go on forever, but I think you get the idea.

I was looking at what some individuals had written on the Anime Cliches thread when writing this.

Perfect Blue, and Welcome To the NHK (NHK ni yokouso)
I geuss Panty and Stocking would count as not too typical Animation

Agreed. I have seen Perfect Blue and Panty and Stocking (which I both like), but I have never seen Welcome to the NHK (or even heard of it for that matter). I take that by posting it you probably recommend it, but my question is, what makes it great (as I have never seen it before)?

Первый отряд First Squad

Why is it non-typical?

- It has a very interesting plot and setting, this one seems to stand out from the others. (WWII Russia)

- There is no Japanese cast, but Russian, so that means the voice acting language is spoken in Russian.

- The Japanese staff did the animation, while the Russian staff did the directing and scripts. (Russian director, typically an anime director would be Japanese.)

- It's Russian.

Air tv. it was weird very sad and really didnt make sense it also never had a good ending, just left you in a puzzle trying to figure out if the curses was ever lifted not a typical anime.

Pale Cocoon, an exploration of the past world. It's a short 1 OVA about people digging up "artifacts" about the Earth. What was life on Earth like? What happened to it? How does it look?

hmmmm, otoboku [Otome wa Boku ni Koishiteru]..... It's pretty good and unique IMO.

lol, i dunno if this counts as non typical but, Lucky Star and Azumanga Daioh are both just random random random.

I dunno, i guess when you look at it almost every anime will fall in to the "Typical" anime catagory.

There are many kinds so, yea.

I dunno if i am responding correctly to this thread, it did say non typical anime but its seeming more like a no anime cliche anime thread..

I guess, the way the anime is presented would decide if its a non-typical anime or not IMO.

I mean, you can have the cliches there, but it won't be your typical anime. [e.g. Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu, K-On, etc.]

well just my input.

um... You mean the movie? Yeah it was okay, but I would put that in the movie category rather then Anime series.

well its like about a hikkikomori (sort of a social out cast/antisocial/scared of society/lock up into the home person) who finds out about a conspiracy to turn every one intoa hikkikomori/otaku, and a girl who tries to help him out of his ways.
it points out the psychologic and emotional fellings of being an otaku, hikkikomori social outcast, etc. it goes through the real life problems people deal with (being stuck in debt, relationship issues, otaku issues, etc.). but it is also really funny.
its a good show, one of my favourites

If I had to choose 1 anime that seemed so freaking out of the ordinary for me when I first saw it compared to all the other animes that I saw before it.

I think I would choose Welcome To The NHK. I swear that was a mindfuck at first for me. And it got REAL DEEP into the life of a NEET. Therefore it pleased me

Satoshi Kon:
-Paranoia Agent
-Paprika
-Perfect Blue
-Millennium Actress

Mohiro Kitoh:
-Bokurano
-Narutaru

Akiyuki Shinbo / Studio SHAFT:
-Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei
-Bakemonogatari
-Arakawa Under the Bridge
-Soredemo Machi wa Mawatteiru

Masaaki Yuasa:
-Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei
-Kaiba

Studio Gainax:
-Neon Genesis Evangelion
-FLCL
-Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt

Studio Ghibli:
-Everything. Literally. Grave of the Fireflies is probably the most triumphant example.

Others include:

-Welcome to the NHK
-Serial Experiments Lain
-Natsume Yuujinchou
-Honey & Clover
-Nodame Cantabile
-Berserk
-Aoi Bungaku
-Durarara!!
-Baccano!
-Trapeze

There are a LOT more than this, but these are the ones that come to my mind first. Funny enough, none of them have any fanservice, with the exception of Welcome to the NHK and Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt, which is rather a parody of it to begin with.
