Since no one would read my work and it's not really for fanfiction.net, I put it in wordpress. If you're interested, you can reply to this post. I'll be posting here to show everyone my work. Happy reading!
From the Author:
Setting and some characters belong to Shungiku Nakamura. This was inspired by manga written by Haruka Minami and Hotaru Odagiri. Both are Yaoi, so I suggest to not read them unless you want your innocence to be robbed off you. Anyways! The only characters I own are Miyuki, Miharu, Hiromu, Harumi, Midori, Hotaru and Sayuri! Sakuraba is actually from Ai Yori Aoshi since she was also a landlady there. On with the story then! Happy reading!
By my Side
Tall, intelligent… Handsome, popular… Kind and gentle to everyone he meets… He’s like the diagram of the perfect human being. What else could you ask for?
Miyuki, I thought you told yourself you were going to act like a lady today? That stupid Miyagi! I’m not even the Dean’s assistant, yet I get bossed around by him. Well, I guess it’s because he’s my cousin… but that doesn’t matter! He’s just a literature professor!
I sighed, holding the pile of papers close to my chest as I ran through the corridor of the arts department. You are so treating me to ice cream after this you ba—Wah? I felt myself lose footing and slipped. “Out of the way!” I yelled as I saw someone in front of me. I closed my eyes tightly and braced myself for impact. …Huh? What happened to the falling part?
“Are you alright?” A voice asked. The scent of body spray filled my nose. I opened my eyes and found myself in someone’s arms and chest. Looks like a well-built one too. “Um…” He said again. I finally snapped back to reality and shot up from his hold.
“A-ah… I’m so sorry for bumping into you! O-oh and thank you for saving me!” I bowed down low, hugging the pile of papers still in my hands.
“It’s alright,” He replied coolly.
I blinked as I scanned his features. Blond hair, piercing blue eyes… Uh-oh… This is… “Miyamoto Miharu!” What’s he doing here?!
He chuckled at my reaction. “I get that a lot.”
I blinked once more. I wasn’t expecting this…
“May I know the name of the lady I just saved?” He asked politely, just like a line from a play.
“Miyuki. Hanamoto Miyuki,” I answered.
“Oh! Thank you again, you really helped me back there,” I bowed once more and put on my best smile.
“Ah, a beautiful lady is always worth saving,” He got closer and took my right hand. I gripped my left hand tighter for support not to let the papers fall. He then kissed the back of my hand gently. W-what is this..? I blushed furiously as he let go.
“I’ll see you around then, Miyuki-chan,” Miharu winked at me before leaving.
What the heck? Why would the most popular guy at school be so sweet and gentle to plain old me? Then suddenly we’re on a first name basis. I sighed as I let my thoughts wonder. Then it hit me.
“Oh no! The papers!” Miyagi is so gonna kill me!
As soon as my last class was over, I hurried out before a certain professor in literature decides to bug me with errands again. On my way to the gate, I was greeted by the usual sight of a brown haired teen being picked up by a red sports car. Then, there’s always the campus celebrity being swamped by fangirls. There are fanboys as well…
“Miyuki-chan!” Someone called out. The only person who calls me that is…
“Hey, Miyuki-chan! You going home?” The blond asked as he came up to me.
“Yup. Is something the matter Miha—Miyamoto-san?” I corrected myself. He may be using my first name, but I still try to be polite.
He blinked at the way I addressed him. “Just call me Miharu, Miyuki-chan,” He requested accompanied by a smile.
I felt my heart skip a beat. “Um… Miharu… kun…?” I stammered, blushing furiously.
Miharu chuckled at my reaction once again. “I guess that’s improvement. I’ll see you tomorrow then, Miyuki-chan~” He leaned in and kissed my cheek. He waved at me as he left. I touched the patch of skin where his lips were just on. I blushed harder than ever. Darn it! I’m not about to let myself be taken advantage of again!
From that day onwards, my life on campus changed completely. It’s no longer peaceful at the least…
“Miyuki-chan! Let’s have lunch together again!” Miharu came up to me as soon as the professor exited the room. I don’t remember being classmates with him…
“Oh, uh… sure, okay,” I stuttered. I felt a chill run up my spine and glanced to the left where the door was. Some girls glared at me as they went out. I let out a sigh as the blond went back to his seat to fix his things.
After Miharu and I started hanging out, girls have been telling me to leave him alone, bullying and blackmailing me. I try to comply so they would leave me alone, but then I can’t tell Miharu that…
“What’s up, Miyuki-chan?”
I almost jumped at the sound of his voice. “I-it’s nothing! Let’s go then!”
“Hanamoto-san, are you alright?” A teen with raven black hair and golden eyes asked. This guy was Takahashi Hiromu. He’s on the basketball team if I remember correctly.
“Ah, yes, I’m fine…” I trailed off. Am I giving them another reason to blackmail me…?
He raised an eyebrow. “I see,” I notice him glance to his right. I followed his gaze and saw Miharu coming. “Take care of yourself.”
I blinked as he walked away. “S-sure…” I managed to reply before he was out of sight.
“Hey, Miyuki-chan!” The blond called out. He sat next to me in Algebra as always. Since I’m an irregular student, we’re not really classmates in every class and I don’t have many friends either, so I guess being with him is also a good thing… I think. But then, the girls still aren’t leaving me alone. I can’t tell Miharu that. What should I do…?
“Is something up?” He suddenly asked.
I blinked and faked a smile. “Nothing! I was just thinking.”
“Okay then,” He shrugged. I slapped myself mentally. No matter what, I can’t let him know…
After my last class, I decided to go with Miyagi’s suggestion to sit-in his lecture. No offense to Kamijou-sensei. He’s really good at teaching, but then let’s just say his nickname, “Demon Professor” is pretty self-explanatory.
I came a few minutes earlier to avoid disrupting the class. I sat on a vacant seat at the back. More students came in not long after. I saw a familiar figure sitting on the front. It was Takahashi-kun. I didn’t know he took up literature. The door opened once more and in coming was the professor. He looked at his students as he took attendance. He noticed me and smiled a bit then began his lecture.
As the class was finished, Miyagi asked me to stay for a little while to help him carry his things back to the faculty room. I saw figures waiting at the door. Must be them again… I decided to help him to avoid any confrontation with the girls.
“You okay, Miyu? You seem spaced out,” The older man said seeing me out of it.
I snapped back to reality. “M-me? I’m fine! Never better!” I laughed nervously and forced a smile. I thought I saw him smirk just now…
“How about I drive you home today?” He offered, opening the door. I stayed silent for a while and entered the room, placing his laptop on the desk. I glanced outside the window and saw people flocking at the gate. “Okay… Thanks, You-chan.”
On the way home, I kept silent the whole trip. I sat next to Miyagi on the front seat of his car. I stared out the window blankly, watching the lights and reading the signs we passed by.
“So… how’s Shinobu-kun?” I asked in an attempt to make a conversation. He stepped on the brake abruptly. I’m glad I’m wearing a seat belt…
“H-how do you know about him?” He asked, his voice shaking.
I blinked. “Well… I kind of bumped into him once at the faculty room. He was looking for you and thought you were cheating…” I trailed off, laughing nervously.
Miyagi sighed into the steering wheel, exasperated. “I told him not to let himself in just like that…” Seeing my apartment, he stopped the car and I got off.
“Thanks for the ride, You-chan,” I said before closing the door. “Oh and don’t worry, your secret’s safe with me.”
“I know it is,” He smiled. “Take care of yourself, Miyu.”
I heard him drive away as I closed the front door. I sighed heavily and leaned on the door for a little while.
“Are you alright, Miyu-chan?” A middle-aged woman in a blue kimono asked. It was the landlady. She lived on the ground floor of the building so she can monitor who comes and goes.
“Yes, Sakuraba-sama,” I answered smiling. I glanced to her upper right to check the wall clock. 8:36 PM. Good. I thought it was already past curfew.
“Oh, I almost forgot,” She pulled something from her sleeve. It was an envelope. She handed it over to me. “That arrived earlier today.”
I opened the envelope and peeked inside. It was money from my parents. “Thank you for keeping this for me earlier, Sakuraba-sama.”
“It’s no problem dear. By the way, why did you come home late today? You usually come home before sundown.”
“Oh, my cousin’s a professor at Mitsuhashi and he asked me to help him with some things,” I explained, putting the envelope in my bag.
“I see,” She turned around and went to the entrance of her unit. “Have a nice evening, Miyu-chan,” She said before going into the room.
“Same to you as well ma’am,” I then hurried to my unit at the second floor. I rummaged through my bag and got my keys to unlock the door. I flicked open the lights as I entered. My current abode is very humble compared to my former one. My family looks after a temple that has been standing for generations. My parents wanted me to become a priestess, but I refused and said I wanted to go to college. It wasn’t easy to convince them to let me go. After I changed their minds, my father agreed to help me with the expenses. I work part time as a waitress at a cafe somewhere near campus for extra cash.
I placed my bag on the desk and immediately flopped on my futon. I sighed into my pillow. What a long day…
I raised my head to check the calendar. Tomorrow’s Friday? That means I have work the next day. I rolled to my side to face the wall and closed my emerald eyes. “Please let tomorrow be worthwhile…”
“Miyuki-san!” A girl with silver hair called out. I don’t have any classes today, but I came to school anyway for club activities. I entered the glee club because I wanted to improve my soprano voice. Our humble organization goes by the name ‘The Mitsuhashi Arias.
“What’s up, Reira-san?” I asked. She seemed out of breath.
“Miyuki-san, did you hear?” Another girl said.
“What is it, Midori-san?” I asked politely.
“The basketball team’s playing Hanadera in a practice game!” Midori finally said. I raised my brows questioningly.
“It’s Miyamoto-san! His friend on the team asked him to play as a reliever!” I blinked at the last statement. I didn’t know he could play basketball.
“It’s started already!” Curious, I left with the girls and hurried over to the gym. We went to the balcony for a better view of the game.
“We’re winning!” Someone squeeled.
“Most of the points are being scored by Takahashi-kun and Miyamoto-san!” Another exclaimed.
I checked the scoreboard. We were up by two points. I scanned the court and looked for Miharu and Takahashi-kun. They were right. Those two were really the only ones who scored.
“Look! Now they’ve got are three guards on him!”
I saw the blond glance at me while the ball was in his possession. He grinned and shot the ball for three points. He must think I came here to cheer him on. I looked at Takahashi-kun and saw him smirk.
“He’s just too perfect isn’t he?” Midori said in awe.
“I guess people like him do exist…”
I wonder… What did I really come here for?
Just then, the referee blew the whistle as Miharu raised his hand.
“What’s going on?”
He then walked away from the court while everyone’s attention was on the ball.
“Wha—he’s leaving the court! Is he injured or something?!”
“Miharu-san got replaced!”
“We were about to win!”
I heard more whines from the students.
“Should we sit and watch through?”
“To come this far and be replaced just like that… Something must have happened,” Midori said.
“Don’t you think, Miyuki-san?”
I felt myself panic a little. Why would he… It couldn’t really be that…
“Sorry guys, but I have to go…!” I said, rushing to the stairs and hurrying to the exit.
He just left… I searched in the area next to the gym. He’s not here… “Where did you go…?”
“Looking for me?” Someone said from behind me, next to the bushes. I heard him come closer as he stepped on the grass. I felt his hot breath on the back of my neck.
I turned around abruptly and came face to face with him. Goodness… I blushed deep crimson. I then felt strong arms wrap around my body. He’s drenched in sweat yet he’s so warm…
“I’m so happy you came to watch me play, Miyuki-chan,” He said, pulling away.
“O-oh, yeah! My friends told me about the match so I went to see. I didn’t know you played basketball, Miharu-kun,” I responded still blushing.
“I see. I only play for fun. I’m not actually a pro,” He shrugged.
“Um… But why leave when we were about to win? I mean, this might actually be the first time Mitsuhashi gets a victory.”
“I just got bored,” He said coolly.
This guy is such a…!
“Anyway, the game will be over soon.”
A breeze went by as I stood beside him. I guess it’s good that he’s not asking me why I came after him… Roars came from the gym all of a sudden.
“From the noise, I’d say we won.”
“Yeah…” I trailed off.
“…I think I’d better go change,” Miharu ran his hand through his blond hair.
I watched him quietly. Something on my chest shone as it was hit by the sun’s rays. He looked over at me and came closer.
“Nice brooch,” He said, upon closer inspection. “A snowflake?”
“Yeah, because of the ‘Yuki’ in my name,” I explained. “My parents call me that sometimes too.”
He nodded and looked over at the distance. “Looks like they’re finished.”
“Well, I better get changed then. See you later, Miyuki-chan!” He waved as he left.
I waved back absentmindedly. Crap! I hope no one saw I was with him. I’ll be so totally dead if they found out.
“Okay, from the top everyone!”
Finally, practice. I’m glad my time won’t ever be wasted here in the club. They’re like my second family already.
The club has scheduled our next performance on the university’s cultural festival. We’re going to be singing for a chosen charity as well.
“Miyuki-san!” Someone called. And just when I was about to sing too.
“There’s someone looking for you,” Huh, I wonder who. I went to the door and saw a tall figure.
The raven haired teen turned to face me. “Hey, Hanamoto-san."
“Is something the matter?” I asked. It’s pretty unusual for him to be looking for me.
“Can we go somewhere else to talk?” He looks pretty serious…
I looked back to the room and thought for a while. I need to go back for practice…But… I guess it can wait.
“…sure,” I finally answered. He nodded and walked to the exit of the building. I followed as he led the way. I observed him as we strolled along. He looks physically fit. Well, of course since he’s a player, duh. I mentally kicked myself.
I wonder what he wants… I raised my head to look at the surroundings. We were behind the lecture building.
“Um… so what did you want to say, Takahashi-kun?” I asked as we stopped walking.
“I’m tired of the silent treatment, Hanamoto,” He said in a serious tone. I blinked and my eyes widened.
“W-what do you mean?” I stuttered.
“You very well know what I mean,” He came closer. I looked at the ground, nervous about what he’s going to say next.
“Why do you let people take advantage of you?”
I took a step backward, my head still bowed to avoid his gaze. “I d-don’t understand…”
“Don’t play dumb with me!” He exclaimed.
I bit my lower lip and clenched my fists, gripping the fabric of my skirt. “I just… wanted to be accepted. That’s why I keep doing things for others even if I don’t like them. I just wanted to fit in… That’s all…” I trailed off, tears forming in my eyes.
He sighed and shook his head. “You’re an idiot, Hanamoto.”
I froze at his statement. I clenched my fists tighter and closed my eyes, letting the tears fall. I then felt a hand on my chin, raising my head so I was looking at him. His golden eyes felt like they could see right through me. He leaned forward and pressed his lips to mine. My eyes widened in shock, tears stopped flowing. I felt something hard against my back. Seems he pushed me on a tree. I felt myself melt under the kiss. His lips were rough but warm. He pulled away seconds later, out of breath.
Takahashi bent down and pressed his forehead against my left shoulder. “I like you, Miyuki…”
I felt my heart skip a beat. “Why…?” I asked absentmindedly.
“I guess… it’s because of the way you acted. It made me want to protect you,” He wrapped his arms around my frame.
I couldn’t say a word. I didn’t know what to.
“Miyuki…” I felt my knees go weak as he said my name once more. He embraced me tight once before letting go.
“May I know your answer?”
I blinked and bit the inside of my lower lip. “I… Takahashi-kun… I don’t know…” I slapped myself mentally.
He smiled and ran a hand through his hair. “It’s alright. I’ll wait for your answer.”
“I’m sorry…” I said, still at loss for words.
“Just don’t make me wait too long,” He chuckled.
“Y-yeah…” I trailed off. What should I do…?
